You dealt with it all by yourself
You fought for yourself
You withstood so much yourself
And in the end..you felt stuck
No matter what you did
No matter who you talked to you
No matter where you ran too
The overwhelming fear it got you
If i Break
All i fought for was useless
But the challengers brought us closer
As friends
As teammates
As basic Human begins
Maybe If i were to break
It would be a good thing
We all seem to be carrying our own little world
With different experiences
With different challenges

But
If we break
We can be put back together
And each time we break
The easier
The heavy worlds we carry seem
The less scary that overwhelming fear is
The less it feels
We are caring the world by ourselves
If i were too break
I wouldn't be sad or mad about it
Because
If i were too break
I have my friends behind me all the way

Momoi needs all the love and this is so much my OT3. I hope you enjoy because I had a lot of fun writing for this prompt.

***

The first thing Momoi wanted to do when they got to the beach was change so she could go play in the surf. She insisted there was no point in buying a brand new swimsuit if she didn’t even get it wet.

Aomine decided to help her with that part. He joined her in the water so he could splash her like they were kids again. She might complain about him chasing and teasing her, but she couldn’t keep herself from laughing. It was that laugh he was after.

After a few minutes, Momoi glanced back at the beach for the third member of their trio. She wasn’t trying to strike a pose (she didn’t need to), but she did pull together the wet hair sticking to her shoulders.

“He’s not going to notice your swimsuit,” Aomine predicted.

“So what? You could show up in a speedo and Tetsu-kun wouldn’t notice that, either.”

Kuroko had come wearing shorts and a plain t-shirt, and hadn’t bothered to change into a swimsuit. He had parked himself on their beach blanket instead of joining the two of them.

Anyone who didn’t know him well would probably think he was bored and sullen at having been dragged along. Even from here Aomine could see the soft ease in his posture and the clear look in his eyes that said he was enjoying himself just watching people he loved be happy.

He might enjoy people watching, but Aomine knew there were some details that still sailed right over his head. Any time Momoi dressed up, for example. That light and dark blue bikini could catch the eye of every other person on the beach with the slightest interest in girls and Kuroko would remain oblivious.

Aomine wrapped his arms around Momoi’s waist and dropped a kiss on her shoulder. He’d never seen a point in shying away from PDA. If he felt like showing his feelings to Momoi then why should he care what anybody else thought? Every so often he just wanted to monopolize her attention. If it took something obvious to get his point across to her then that was what he would do.

“You look great,” he told her. Someone needed to say it, so it would just have to be him.

As long as Aomine and Momoi wanted to play around in the water, Kuroko stayed put to watch them having fun. He didn’t get up and wander to the boardwalk for something to drink until they were done, but when he came back he found Momoi sitting by herself. (His eye was quickly drawn to Aomine, who had somehow gotten himself into a competition with some beach volleyball players. Kuroko figured he was having fun being left to his own devices for now.)

He stepped up silently beside Momoi and touched a cold bottle of water to her cheek to make her jump. He would not admit it out loud, but it was always a little fun to surprise people. That was especially true with Momoi, who would blush and get flustered every time. It was cute.

“I brought honey-soaked lemons,” she announced, trying to hide her agitation by grabbing for the tupperware balanced on top of her beach bag. The slices crammed inside were all different shapes and thicknesses.

“Did you give Aomine some too?” Kuroko asked as he settled next to her.

“He just complained that there were seeds. After I even cut them up this time. There’s no pleasing him!”

Kuroko carefully selected one of the slices that wasn’t studded with seeds and bit into it. It was no longer cold and still bitter around the edges, but under that it was sweet.

“They’re better than last time,” he told her, because he thought compliments needed to be true. It was true. He thought that every time she tried her cooking was a tiny bit better.

Momoi practically glowed as he finished the lemon slice and licked honey off his fingers. It only took the tiniest thing to make her happy.

Kuroko reached over to where her hand rested on the blanket and laced his fingers with hers in a gesture that would be all but invisible to anyone but them. Because it took such small things to make her happy, he thought it was best to do as many small things as possible and let them build up into more and more.

Of course, Momoi responded by leaning her full body against his arm in a gesture that was not in any way subtle. He put up with it only because it was her.

“Thank you. It was kind of you to make those for us,” Kuroko said after a moment. Someone needed to make sure Momoi knew her efforts were appreciated, and so it would have to be him.

When they left the beach together Aomine was not shy about holding Momoi’s hand. He was equally bold about hooking his arm through Kuroko’s when the other tried to fall a step behind them and dragging him forward so all three of them were together.

Momoi had enjoyed the day from beginning to end just by being together with the two of them. A little extra attention was always nice too.

It was funny, she mused to herself. She didn't have to do anything she wasn't planning to do anyway to get a few extra compliments out of her boyfriends. All she had to do was catch each of them alone and let their natural competitiveness do the rest.

Kimishita barely glances up when the shop’s doorbell chimes—everybody who would come at this time of day would know to interrupt him if it was urgent, and if it isn’t a regular, then, well. They can figure it out.

He resumes hacking away at his math problem, punching in some numbers on his calculator to double-check his answer before moving onto the next question.

OK. Done. That’s his math homework done, and even though he knows there isn’t a test for at least another two weeks, he opens his binder to see if there’s anything else for him to do.

The sound of footsteps heads towards him. A finger pokes his shoulder.

“Hey,” Kiichi says.

“Hey,” Kimishita echoes, then says, perhaps harsher than intended, “What’re you doing here?”

Instead of answering, Kiichi looks around the store. He steps away for a moment, grabs a nearby stool, and drags it over next to Kimishita. Kiichi plops down on it.

“You’re stressing,” he says. Well, no shit. It’s their nationals-qualifying game tomorrow, and if Kimishita—as captain, not just as their playmaker—fails to get them there this year… Simply put, it’d suck.

“No, I’m not,” Kimishita retorts, simply to be contradictory. He tries again: “Why’re you here? You live pretty far.”

Kiichi rolls his eyes. “I texted you,” he says, slowly, as if Kimishita is the idiot in the room. “You didn’t answer. Which means you’re probably in the shop doing math homework to keep your mind off something. But we both know you don’t have any tests coming up, but we do have a game tomorrow, so obviously you’re stressing. Ha, there.” He holds Kimishita’s gaze for a few seconds, then gives a pointed glance at the open math binder on the desk.

“That doesn’t—” answer the question, Kimishita wants to say, but he knows getting an unwilling answer out of Kiichi is a pain, and it’s not really worth it, so he lets it go. “Fine. Yes, I’m stressed. What about it?”

Kiichi jabs Kimishita’s calf with his toe. “Stop being stressed, duh. Thought you were smart.”

Kimishita makes a sort of growling noise from the back of his throat. “You think that’s so easy, huh?”

“We’re gonna make it,” Kiichi says, ignoring him. “We’re gonna win it—and then we’ll win everything after, too. I’ll score as many goals as they do, just you wait.”

He says it with such easy confidence that Kimishita finds himself having to believe him—just a little. He squashes down the flipping feeling in his stomach and knocks his ankle into Kiichi’s. “Score as many goals as them, huh? What happened to the rest of our team?” Even as he speaks, he can feel a smile tugging at his lips, and his words come out fonder than usual.

Kiichi huffs out a laugh. “Fine; you and me, we’re enough to win.” Kimishita snorts—that’s not what he meant, even if it’s kinda nice of him—and Kiichi continues: “Great. C’mon, let’s go pass a ball around. I didn't come all this way just to cheer you up.”

As Kiichi rises, Kimishita can’t resist teasing, “Now who’s stressed, huh?”

No prior Goblin knowledge required! I don't even know what this is tbh, but I had a lot of fun writing it and I'm happy with the result. :)

***
Nobody could see the sword stuck in Kuroo's chest.
One day, there might be a person who could – Kuroo both feared and looked forward to that day.
There had been a time where he wanted nothing more than for someone to pull the sword that had become his companion out and finally let him find peace.

Right now though, he didn't mind waiting a bit longer. He had managed to make a comfortable life for himself, his house was warm (and huge), his wallet was full (extremely full), and he wanted for nothing.
Never would he be able to accept dying and just leaving the house behind for his current roommate Ushijima. That guy was annoying, had bad taste in beer and Kuroo did not care for him. Not at all, not one bit.

Kuroo was at the grocery store, looking at the beer selection. With a sigh, he took two different brands of beer. Just because Ushijima was even more annoying when complaining.

The young man next to him pointed out his odd choice in beer, which Kuroo ignored. Sawamura.

One more reason for him to stay a little longer.
When he had saved the life of Sawamura's mother 20 years ago, he had not expected Sawamura to grow up, well, at all.
The grim reapers had it out for him, his soul never should have entered the world, and they desperately wanted it back.
Kuroo was a kind man, a philanthropist. It would simply not be responsible of him to let a young man such as Sawamura fend for himself, after all his life and endless need to hide from the grim reapers was kind of Kuroo's fault.

Which was why Kuroo had promised Sawamura his protection, and was currently grocery shopping with him. Grocery shopping and buying beer for his roommate Ushijima, the grim reaper who was supposed to collect the university student's soul. How had Kuroo gotten himself into this mess?

“- so I was talking to this ghost at the restaurant, when Ushijima-san showed up-” Sawamura had been talking about something for a few minutes, but the words 'ghost' and 'Ushijima' made Kuroo's ears perk up.

“What was that guy doing at your workplace?”
Perhaps Kuroo trusted the grim reaper enough to have beer with him on Friday evenings, but he still worried about him being alone with Sawamura.

Sawamura shrugged. “I have no idea to be honest, I think he might be trying to flirt with my boss.”

“I would pay money to see that.” The mental image of Ushijima attempting to flirt with gorgeous, confident Oikawa calmed him down a bit. “Do you think it's working?”

“Oikawa went on a rant about 'stupid, awkward, handsome men' yesterday, so it probably is.”

Kuroo was jealous. Not because he liked Oikawa or anything – he was attractive of course, but not his type. He didn't like cunning and ambitious idiots, he liked honest and kind idiots.
Kuroo was jealous, because he really wanted to be able to flirt with Sawamura like that. Well, not exactly like Ushijima, he would do a much better job.

Because he knew that whatever was brewing between destined to end. Shopping for groceries together almost domestic, and he was tempted to imagine that that was all it was. Just him and a guy he could maybe love one day, buying food for a movie night with his best friend.

But Ushijima was not Kuroo's best friend.
Officially, Ushijima still had it out for Sawamura. Sure, he warned Sawamura about misfortunes that might happen to him, and they seemed to be getting along quite well to Kuroo's annoyance, but nobody knew what would happen if Ushijima's superiors found out.
Kuroo was not exactly well versed in grim reaper laws, but just not letting someone die was probably illegal.

And when Kuroo and Sawamura started the long walk back to his house and he looked at the latter's handsome grin under the lanterns, he reminded himself that he could not love Sawamura, even if he so desperately wanted to.
Nobody could see the sword stuck in Kuroo's chest, except his one true love.

Lately, Kuroo had been feeling watched whenever it got dark. He felt something lurking, something the universe had sent to take away the happiness he had found for himself. Immortality was not supposed to be happy, it was not even supposed to be bearable.

He owed it to Sawamura not to drag him any further into the supernatural mess he was in. The young man had suffered enough by ghosts following him around wherever he went.
Maybe, if there was something more tangible tying them to each other, Kuroo might have confided in him. But the only thing Kuroo was tied to was the earth, not letting him go and trying to push Sawamura away. Sawamura Daichi was not Kuroo's one true love.

“Kuroo, are you alright? You seem distracted, I didn't know my stories were that boring.” Sawamura's tone was teasing, but his eyes blinked with concern.

“It's fine,” Kuroo replied a bit to quickly, “I think ate too many meat buns, my stomach is kind of hurting.”

“Your stomach, huh?” The university student sounded oddly serious.

They walked in silence for while. Kuroo needed to get over his moping. Yes, their time together would end, but not tonight, tonight they were making Ushijima watch bad movies and drinking beer.

It was comfortable, walking with Sawamura. He had a calming presence, and even though Kuroo did all the protecting, he felt safe.

“Does it hurt?” Sawamura asked when they were almost home.

Was this the beginning to some type of pick-up line?
“What do you mean?”

Sawamura looked around and leaned a bit closer to him. “The sword,” he whispered.

This could not be happening. Kuroo jerked away from him in shock. “You can see it.” He heard, more than felt the trembling in his voice.

“Is that weird? I mean, I can see ghosts and stuff after all.”

Kuroo had to manually calm his breathing. “I'm just surprised you never mentioned it.”
Clearly Sawamura had no clue about the fatality of the situation, and Kuroo intended to keep it that way for as long as he could.

Bumping his shoulder, Sawamura smiled at him. “It seemed rude. We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to.”

Forcing himself to smile back, Kuroo cursed the universe. It was mocking him. Kuroo's key to leave this world, was the person who made him want to stay the most.

Kuroo took Sawamura's hand and allowed himself to enjoy the blush that spread across his face. He might as well enjoy it while it lasted.

If this scene sounds vaguely familiar it might be because I stole it from Gilmore Girls.
Also I failed to mention but Eijun is there much earlier than his teammates (of course) that's why he's alone.

***

Eijun was pulled out of his thoughts by angry yelling coming from the field as he was heading there to warm-up before practice. He couldn’t exactly make out the words used but his Coach was definitely throwing a fit.

He got worried, his Coach was on the older side and his wife had mentioned, or better said begged, that they shouldn’t try to rile him up as he was quite hot-headed and needed to watch his blood pressure.

He closed his eyes temporarily to protect them from the shining morning sun when he stepped outside and his jaw dropped when he opened them again.

He approached the diamond in a daze, finally hearing clearly the commotion.

“I WANT TO TALK TO YOUR MANAGER.”

“I’d be more than happy to give you their number. But I’m telling you, we’re just a delivery company. You want those removed ? Call another service. Private or the stadium’s. Or do it yourself.”

“Waoh.”

Both men turned to look at him, surprised, probably not having heard him coming.

“Sawamura !”

Wonder expression still plastered on his face, he hummed in response, completely bypassing his usual archaic, proper greetings.

“Excuse me, are you Sawamura Eijun ?”

“Hmm yes…”

The delivery guy let out a sigh of relief and pushed onto him his device.

“Just a signature here, please.”

Eijun did so in a daze, and leaned in to smell the flowery fragrance.

“Thank you very much for your patronage.”

The man left in a hurry, under the angry yells of the Coach who didn’t stop until he was out of view.

“What the fuck ?! Who even authorized deliveries of FLOWERS in a baseball stadium ?? It’s the fucking bullpen we actually use that !! There must be hundreds of-”

“One thousand.”

Eijun picked up the first bouquet he could reach.

“There’s exactly one thousand sunflowers inside the diamond.”

The Coach put a hand on his hip and gestured at the sight.

“You know what’s the meaning of this ?!”

/

“God, Eijun you’ve been pouting since we left the screening room. I thought you loved romantic movies.”

“I just… Have you seen that proposal ? How impersonal ! That’s not how you propose !! I’ve seen a thousand of them, trust me.”

The catcher smiled.

“You’re pretty passionate about this.”

“Well, it’s important !! Not because you have to do a big gesture but it has to be meaningful ! Not just some dumb dinner at a stupid restaurant in front of a thousand strangers. Like it’s the perfect opportunity to prove how much you know the other person !”

“So, that’s your hot take ?”

“YES !! The more personal, the better ! Like me for example. I love baseball, more precisely I’m a pitcher. My favourite colour is yellow, I love sunflowers, I was born in the countryside in Nagano... I’m left-handed.”

“I’d be very curious to know how the left-handedness would play out in your dreamy proposal.”

“Oh shut up, leave me alone. That was just an example of information I gave out of a thousand, you ass. And no, I don’t know how they would be useful. The surprise is part of the fun, you see.”

He hummed, pensive.

“You say that number a lot.”

“What number ?”

“A thousand. Is it your favourite number ?”

Eijun felt his cheeks warming up.

“And what about it ?”

The bespectacled man smiled knowingly.

“Nothing. I just think it’s funny. Should have figured it would be such an unbelievably high number. Worst would have been a million or a billion.”

“Stop mocking me. It could have been just an expression.”

“Yeah, but it’s not.”

“You’re impossible, Miyuki Kazuya.”

/

Eijun tightened his hold around the bouquet.

It had just been a casual conversation started out of frustration for that movie, literally years ago. It had only been their third date, not like he had been expecting anything by that time.

His cheeks were burning. He couldn’t believe Kazuya remembered that.

He lifted his head and let his eyes gaze around in amazement, heart full.

A field of a thousand sunflowers.

“Yes, yes I do.”

“Yuu-chan. Sweetheart. These rules are impossible,” Daishou says.

“Oh? Are they? Maybe Dai-chan can show you how easy it is.” Yuu-chan says.

“Oh now that’s playing dirty,” Daishou accuses.

“Not at all!” Yuu-chan says proudly as she heads to the living room. “Oh Dai-chan!

“Yes my sprin-” Daichi starts before he sees Yuu-chan. He then smiles and gives her a kiss.

“See? Dai-chan can follow my rule. Su-Su should be able to too.”

“Yuu-chan. Sweetheart. I can’t kiss you every time I think you look beautiful. At that point we might as well cancel our date and just stay home and make out.”

“I thought it was just when we were thinking things a little above pg-13?” Daichi says confused.

“Well I haven’t been getting enough kisses and those are my rules now!”

Daichi snorts. “Well then cancel your date then. Cuz you’re gonna have to stay home and make out with us.”

Yuu-chan looks happy. Too happy. “Oh darn. Whatever is a girl to do? Her boyfriends wanna kiss her all night. However shall she cope?”

“Well that sounds like a personal problem that you’re gonna have to figure out yourself sweetheart,” Daishou says, pulling her in close. “And you might wanna figure out soon because this is the part where I start kissing you,” he says before pressing his lips against hers.

“Now how am I supposed to kiss her?” Daichi complains.

Daishou breaks the kiss and chuckles. “With your lips I think.”

Daichi makes a face. “Well thanks for that smartass.”

“You’re welcome.”

“This isn’t me getting kissed excuse you two!” Yuu-chan cuts in.

“Well I gotta make sure I take it slow. I can’t have you getting tired of kisses so soon,” Daishou teases.

“Dai-chan! Su-Su is being a meanie again! I’m just a simple girl with simple needs and he’s over here-”

“Well then come over here my sprinkle and I can treat you right,” Daichi teases.

Yuu-chan tries to go over to Daichi but Daishou tightens his grip on her and goes back to kissing her - hard this time.

Daichi snorts and goes back to finishing putting the cupcakes in the oven while they make out. After all, he’ll have his chance in a minute.

Yuu-chan is very distracted by Daishou at this point with his tongue in her mouth, and squeaks when she feels Daichi behind her kissing her neck.

“Finally decided to join us Captain?” Daishou teases.

“You were a captain too,” Daichi points out.

“Yeah, but you’re the current captain.”

“Su-Su you’ve talked enough shit, it’s Dai-chan’s turn for kisses now,” Yuu-chan huffs.

“Actually I think we need a new rule. Whoever’s name you say first gets to be your big spoon tonight,” Daishou says.

“You’re on.”

Ten minutes from the onset of the new year, and Youichi would rather be anywhere else than over at Miyuki’s place.

For one thing, Miyuki and Sawamura are being… let’s just say, gross. If it were between any other people, he might’ve named their... whatever they had going on as flirting, but he’s not even willing to entertain the idea with those two.

Rather than flirting… they’d been flitting around each other since Sawamura’s high school graduation, Youichi supposes, like a pair of insects. Mindless, incessant, and constantly buzzing. They’re also a pain in Youichi’s ass, honestly, more so than the hamstring strain that nearly ended his college freshman career. There’s not a doubt in Youichi’s mind that, whether or not they knew the extent of the other’s feelings was beyond them. Frankly, all sense of knowing the occurrences between Miyuki and Sawamura were beyond Youichi himself.

But they’re… not really the ones on his mind at the moment, if he’s being honest.

No, he’s thinking about a certain other half of his impervious keystone duo; an upperclassman that Youichi had been all too eager to outplay, at first. That “eagerness to outplay” soon transformed into something else, though - something high school Youichi had internalized, and subsequently denied, for what felt like an eternity. Flash forward to now, and Youichi’s not even sure Ryousuke would recognize him. Time has taken so much from them; the once comforting text messages they once exchanged daily have since dwindled to nothing.

“You’ll call sometime?” Youichi had meant to say, before things took a turn for the worse. “I can tell you everything ridiculous Sawamura and Furuya have done since you left. And I promise I’ll make sure Furuya doesn’t try any funny business with your brother.”

Youichi chuckles, leaning on the edge of Miyuki’s balcony. He only barely managed to escape their… buglike squabbling - he’d only have a few moments before Sawamura undoubtedly came looking for him, Miyuki in tow. Before this moment of repose before the New Year would come crashing down.

“Where are you now, Ryousuke?” Youichi whispers, to no one in particular.

It’s been so long since they’d played on the same team. Would they still work well together, if put on the same diamond? Would they remember the other’s silent cues - their signs? Would they keep their damn-near perfect caught stealing record?

While the thought may be comforting, Youichi’s not sure he can find any comfort in it. They haven’t spoken in so long, Youichi doesn’t even know if Ryousuke even plays baseball anymore.

As time ticks on, Youichi finds himself back with his squabbling mosquito-friends. If he misses Ryousuke, he doesn’t say anything about it.

Kakeru knows he’s not as good of a captain as Haiji was.

For one thing - he’s not a master of psychological manipulation like Haiji. Really, the nine of them were lucky Haiji wasn’t dead set on the ten of them becoming singers or something equally embarrassing; because Haiji would have actually succeeded in getting them to do it.

No, Kakeru’s more of an… intentions worn on his sleeve kind of guy. Even if he doesn’t even know what those intentions are himself. Just last week, even the twins knew that Kakeru was about to ask them to watch Nira (they were the only options - don’t give him that look!) before he’d even opened his mouth. He’s an open book, and literally everyone at the Chikusei-ko knows it. Being unintentionally forward with what you want isn’t exactly helpful, when you’re trying to convince a group of fifteen twenty-somethings that they need to practice running more, if they ever want a chance at placing in the Hakone Ekiden again this year.

“Yeah, yeah,” Nico-chan had said one night, placing his bowl in the sink before leaving the - still too overcrowded - kitchen. They’d tried having a team meeting there once, with everyone, including the bright-eyed freshmen they’d picked up on account of being the nationally-acclaimed underdog story of the decade. It had failed miserably, and Kakeru can’t help but feel like it was completely his fault, despite Shindo and Musa’s urgings. “I’ll run tomorrow morning. Promise. Just can’t right now, got stuff to do.”

The laughter and bumping of elbows across the table - on account of the twins - was all the hinting that Kakeru needed to realize that Nico-chan was going to call Yuki tonight, and oh god Kakeru doesn’t even want to know what Nico-chan and Yuki could possibly want to talk about…

“You think too much,” Haiji says suddenly, voice muffled from the static.

Kakeru nearly jumps - he’d been so lost in thought he’d almost entirely forgotten that he was talking to the old captain himself.

“I didn’t - I didn’t say that aloud. I couldn’t have.”

Haiji laughs his ogre-laugh (is Kakeru’s incompetence really that funny? Really, Haiji?), and the thought crosses Kakeru’s mind that Haiji’s a modern day Scooby-Doo villain. “I will neither confirm nor deny whether you said ‘all of that’ aloud. But I can read your mind. You would know, I’ve done it to you before.”

That doesn’t count!
he wants to say. Anyone can read my mind!

Kakeru sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. He’s not sure he needs this right now.
“Well then… what would you say, if you were still captain?”

“I’d wait for them to feel fully complacent,” Haiji says immediately, and Kakeru would have been surprised, had he not known Haiji so well. “Once they’re fully confident, I’d exploit it.”

Kakeru raises an eyebrow, unenthused. “Exploit it… how?”

He can practically hear Haiji’s ogre smirk. “Just tell them that maybe they’ll have a chance. Some other spring.”

Some… some other spring…!? But that’s… that’s so!

“You’re evil,” Kakeru says, once Haiji’s words catch up to him.

Haiji laughs, and Kakeru wishes he were here. “I am, aren’t I?”

you have always known it was never going to last.

he is a star, bright, shining, streaking through the sky
a god, powerful, mighty, imperfect
avert your eyes, don’t look too close
that boy will burn you up

you are inconsequential
a piece of space dust lucky enough to pass through his orbit
an unholy and unworthy spectator
to the grandeur of his splendor

you offer nothing because you have nothing to offer
you offer yourself because it’s all you have to give
take these hands, you pray, this simple sacrifice
and he holds you like you are something worth holding

you tally the minutes, the hours, the days
you know he will not stay forever
there are thousands of worshippers ready and waiting
to praise him on their knees

in the early mornings he whispers to you
so strange, the words that tumble from his mouth
he wraps you tightly in his arms
and he tells you “you are loved”

you watch him as he sleeps
he has always looked so beautiful in the moonlight
but you are not meant to witness his brilliance
you leave behind only your heart, clutched in his hands

you have always known it was never going to last.

Crouching sixty feet, six inches away from someone never used to feel quite so long.

Well, Miyuki’s never had the best eyesight - even in middle school, he’d sported the always fashionable prescription-sunglasses-over-contacts-combo, but once he’d gotten both of those for himself, reading expressions halfway across the infield never gave him much trouble. Especially when it came to someone as… transparent, as Sawamura Eijun.

Now that they’re fighting on the same stage for what could be the last time - the last inning playing alongside Sawamura, ever - Miyuki can’t help but wonder what he’d done to turn the once transparent Sawamura Eijun into an inscrutable monster.

Sawamura winds up, and sends a pitch down and in. Miyuki catches it, of course, it’s what he’d called for moments ago. The batter swings, ends up stumbling, and curses.

Sounds about right, Miyuki thinks, smirking to himself as he sends the pitch back. He’s still completely unpredictable. Your team’s lost its fighting chance.

Miyuki dropped out of music classes all too long ago - way back when once he’d realized the baseball-shaped hole in his heart - yet he can’t help but think Sawamura’s current pitching style feels more like a series of sforzandos and subito pianos than crescendos and diminuendos.

Sawamura’s pitches are always crashing, always burning. His unpredictability made him unreliable in his first year, but developing confidence has since changed that. He’s fully harnessed every pitch in his arsenal, and with Miyuki’s pitch-calling, they’re sending them out in combinations their opponents can’t even begin to guess.

But while Sawamura may not object to Miyuki’s signs, it doesn’t take a tactical genius to realize that their combination wasn’t what it once was. One day, they’d bantered as they always did; the next, Sawamura’s back was metaphorically turned. Their performance on the field hasn’t changed since then, but… damn, if part of Miyuki doesn’t miss something he never realized he’d had.

There was once a time when Miyuki thought he and Sawamura had… had something, together. That they’d made a good team - good enough of one to consider playing alongside each other again. Something about it had felt so… right, somehow.

That was long ago, of course - back when Sawamura had been within Miyuki’s grasp.

And now - Miyuki needs to accept that Sawamura will do the rest of his growing on his own.

So he signs for another pitch, knowing full well it could be their last.

Love was something Miyuki didn’t know a whole lot about.

So it was within reason that he hadn’t realized he was in love.

It was a strange topic to be ruminating on, but Miyuki had a lot of time on his hands these days.

---

Miyuki knew this was going to happen. Had known it since the doctors told him he had torn his rotator cuff. He was looking at four months of recovery time and was out for most of the season.

It was terrible timing. This season was the best shot the Swallows had at making it to the playoffs in years. It still was. If the team could trade for a halfway decent catcher.

Not that Kunimi was a bad catcher but the kid was only five years out of High School and needed a few more seasons under his belt before Miyuki would start trusting him on a professional level. And the front office was smart enough to recognize that. Which left only one other option...

Miyuki knew this was going to happen. Their coach had told the team right before the press release had been announced. A deal had been made. The Swallows had traded two minor league prospects--Miyuki couldn’t even remember their names. Couldn’t really hear anything past the rush of blood in his ears. His coach had to say Miyuki’s name twice before getting his attention. And he seemed genuinely surprised and suspicious that Miyuki had voiced no complaints.

Miyuki knew this was going to happen. But he still felt his breath catch as Takigawa Chris Yuu walked into the locker room. A duffle bag slung over his shoulder. Hair askew as if he had run his hand through it a few times. He looked calm and casual and well put together considering that he had just gotten off a train from Osaka in order to make tonight’s game.

Chris greeted their coach with a polite bow. They exchanged a few words. Their coach gestured towards Miyuki and Chris nodded before ducking his head and excusing himself. He crossed the locker room and every one of their teammates stopped what they were doing in order to watch him approach Miyuki.

It wasn't exactly a secret that Miyuki could be a little shit when he felt like it.

And for some reason, Miyuki was reminded of the first time he had met Takigawa Chris Yuu. The frustration and irritation and the way he had left Miyuki absolutely humbled--and Miyuki wondered if that was when this had started. This thing...this thing he hesitated to call ‘love’.

“Hey, Miyuki,” said Chris with a smile. “I’m here for your starting spot.”

And Miyuki could physically feel the team’s shock. Even more so when Miyuki laughed and replied, “It’s good to see you, Chris-senpai.”

Chris’ smile dimmed as he glanced at Miyuki’s shoulder. He didn’t say anything. He was the one person in the whole world who wouldn’t need to and for that Miyuki was grateful.

Instead, Chris set down his bag and opened his assigned locker. And Miyuki could physically see the shift in his demeanor. With the pleasantries exchanged it was time to get to work.

“Yahaba’s pitching tonight.”

It wasn’t a question so Miyuki didn’t bother answering.

“Decent in and out fastball. Changeup. Slider.” Chris glanced back at Miyuki. “Unless there’s also a split-finger fastball you’d like to tell me about?”

Miyuki had forgotten what it was like to be around Chris. They had been working on Yahaba’s split-finger fastball during Spring Training. He still was leaving it hanging over the plate too often for it to be effective.

Miyuki must have been taking too long to answer because Chris snorted before turning back towards his locker.

“Guess I’ll find out for myself soon enough. Anything else I need to know about?”

“Yahaba’s solid. Knows how to keep his cool for the most part. Gets into his own head sometimes.”

Chris nodded. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

Miyuki grinned. “I’m glad you’re here, Chris-senpai.”

Chris smiled back at him. “And I’m glad for a shot at the Series.”

Miyuki laughed and, damn, if that wasn’t the first genuine laugh he’d had since his shoulder injury.

---

Miyuki stood on the steps of the dugout with his good arm resting on the railing. He watched as Chris warmed up with Yahaba. Yahaba had pitched against Chris a couple of times in Interleague play, but they had never been teammates before. And Miyuki could see the usual awkwardness when a battery was suddenly thrown together--

And yet...Miyuki felt nothing but relief.

“So,” said Kunimi as he stepped up next to Miyuki. He gave an awkward shrug of his shoulders. “You’re okay with this guy?”

Miyuki glanced at the kid. “Yeah.”

The ease of that admission seemed to throw Kunimi off. Not that Miyuki blamed him. Kunimi had spent the past five years fighting desperately for Miyuki’s starting spot--only to have Miyuki hand it over without a word of complaint.

Kunimi frowned as he looked out across the field. “You sure?”

Miyuki watched Chris stand from the crouch and say something to Yahaba. The pitcher gave a clipped nod before settling back on to the mound.

“Chris-senpai has played for the Buffalos for the past seven years. Do you know what place they’re in?”

Kunimi frowned again. “They’re one of the worst teams in the Pacific League.”

Miyuki hummed in confirmation. “And yet...we have a losing record against them in Interleague play.”

“What?”

“In the past seven years, our record against the Buffalos is nine wins to twelve losses.”

Kunimi didn’t say anything for a while. Eventually, he shook his head. “And you just happen to know that off of the top of your head?”

Miyuki laughed. “You’ll see.”

---

Love was something Miyuki didn’t know a whole lot about.

But he knew you weren’t supposed to stay in love with your first love.

The reasons why you fell in love were supposed to be superficial. The person you fell in love with was supposed to grow up to be a completely different person. You were supposed to grow up to be a completely different person. Time was supposed to change you both and time was supposed to see you go your separate ways.

And yet…

Miyuki watched as Chris popped out of the crouch. His arm already in motion as he threw to second. And the motion was so smooth, so effortlessly done that Miyuki felt his breath catch. The runner who had been standing on second was caught flat-footed taking his lead and was tagged out easily ending the inning.

Yahaba let out an uncharacteristic yell as he pointed at Chris and they tapped gloves on their way back to the dugout. Chris was grinning as he shoved his catcher’s mask off and tucked it under his arm so he could run a hand through his hair.

It wasn’t as if Chris had changed. It was more like…

He had finally become the person Miyuki had always known he would be.

---

After the game, Miyuki found Chris sitting in the dugout. He took a seat next to him on the bench and handed over one of the beers that he had smuggled in just for this occasion.

Chris accepted the beer with a huff of a laugh. He cracked it open and held it out. “Kompai.”

Miyuki clinked his own can against it. “Kompai.”

There wasn’t much to say after that. Miyuki was mentally reviewing the game and he was pretty sure Chris was doing the same thing. Later there would be tapes to watch and scorebooks to go over, but for now...this was enough.

“Do you remember,” started Chris as he resettled himself on the bench. “Back in High School, we used to sit like this after I got back from physical therapy?”

Miyuki chuckled and gestured to his arm in a sling with his beer can. “What’s the saying? The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

Chris eyed his shoulder. “Four months of recovery time, right?”

“Yeah,” said Miyuki with a sigh. He studied the beer can between his fingers. “I really am glad you’re here, senpai. I don’t think I would have trusted this team to anyone else.”

“Ah...well...maybe I can return the favor for you taking care of the Seido team for me.”

Miyuki opened and closed his mouth. He...wasn’t exactly sure what to say. There was a lot of history there. A lot of memories--and not all of them good.

“You know...it’s...strange…that we’ve ended up here like this...” Miyuki trailed off as he looked out across the field. “It’s almost like this recurring dream I’ve had since I was a kid…”

“I think I know what you mean.” Chris smiled as he glanced at Miyuki. “We never did get to compete for the starting spot back in High School.”

Miyuki grinned. “No, we did not.”

“So...in four months?”

“Oh, I’m totally going to take back my starting spot.”

Chris laughed as he leaned back on the bench. “I’m glad to be here too, you know.” And he looked casual and relaxed even as he added, “With you.”

And Miyuki tried to laugh it off...but he suspected he sounded as sincere as he felt.

“It’s a real dream come true.”

---

Love was something Miyuki didn’t know a whole lot about.

But he knew…

It felt a lot like this.

i wasn't sure if it would be funnier if he didn't say fuck or if he eventually did....but i think this is a good reason for him to

***

Koushi thinks that everyone on Karasuno could benefit from saying fuck a little bit more. Except Tanaka. Tanaka says fuck enough. But the person out of the most of them that deserves -- no, that needs to say fuck is Asahi.

Asahi has never said fuck. Koushi has been friends with Asahi for three years, and he’s never said fuck. They’re going to be adults! Koushi is a firm believer that if you’re going to be an adult, you need to have at least said fuck once. And because he’s a good friend, Koushi has taken it upon himself to make Asahi say fuck. He’ll thank Koushi someday.

The first time Koushi tries to make Asahi say fuck, he tries to use fear. Once he accidentally snuck up on Narita, and when he said hi Narita yelled fuck so loud Ukai had told him to shut the fuck up. The bushes dig into Koushi’s knees where he hides behind them, eagerly scouting Asahi’s typical route home. He catches 14 Rattatas before he hears Asahi’s quiet voice underneath Noya’s exclamations.

Perfect. He’s extra distracted.

As soon as he sees Asahi’s sneakers approach his hiding space, Koushi springs up, screaming and lunging at Asahi.

Asahi doesn’t say fuck.

Instead, Asahi screams high pitched and ear splitting, and attempts to climb Noya like a cat fleeing into a tree, despite the 25 centimeters he has on the smaller boy. For his part, all Noya does is laugh and let Asahi wrap himself around him.

Koushi sighs before waving goodbye to Noya and punching Asahi in the stomach.

Fuck.

The days go on like this.

Koushi pretends to trip and spill water onto Asahi during lunch. Instead of being mad, he just asks Koushi if he’s okay and brushes off Koushi’s apologies.

He sneaks up behind him 5 more times, each time causing Asahi to scream and jump into the arms of the nearest person. The last time it was Hinata, and Asahi had practically crushed him so Daichi made Koushi stop. Whatever, Daichi.

He tries to piss Asahi off. The problem with that is Koushi is still actually Asahi’s friend, so he tries to get Tsukishima to come up with insults for him. Tsukishima just levels him with an unamused glare and pulls his headphones over his ears. Useless.

Fear, anger, surprise. No, no, no. Asahi is an anti-saying-fuck machine. Koushi tries happiness, buying Asahi tonkotsu ramen and a new volleyball. Asahi just looks uncomfortable but grateful. This plan quickly fizzles out with Koushi’s bank account, and is fully squashed when Daichi tells him Asahi asked what was wrong with him.

Koushi has finally resigned himself to convincing Asahi the old fashioned way: with his charm.

“You know this is a good stage in your development as a person, Asahi.”

Asahi rolls his eyes. Who the fuck taught him to do that?

“I don’t need to say swears to develop as a person.”

Koushi sighs. He just doesn’t get it.

“It’s a symbol of you holding onto your- your-” Koushi searches for the word, “childhood!”

“I don’t think that’s true.”

Noya bounds up, interrupting the rest of Koushi’s increasingly absurd arguments.

“You know, Suga,” Noya collapses into the seat next to Asahi, “if you want to get him to say fuck you should have just asked.”

“Asked you?” Koushi eyes Noya skeptically.

Noya’s eyes twinkle with mischief.

“Duh!” Noya jumps up to perch on the edge of the picnic table, encroaching into Asahi’s space, which for his part Asahi barely acknowledges, “Watch!”

And then he grabs Asahi’s face, and pulls him into a kiss. A kiss. A kiss that is so much a kiss that Koushi feels like he has to look away, especially when he sees Asahi’s hands come up to grip Noya’s waist.

When they finally pull away, Asahi looks dazed and Noya is radiating smugness. Slowly Asahi brings his fingers up to touch his lips gently, before softly muttering to himself.

“Fuck.”
