Sanada carefully props his umbrella up against the corner as he shuts the door behind himself, readjusting the cap on his head before slowly shrugging out of his coat. He hangs it on one of the hooks by the door before slowly making his way into the room, looking at the figure on the bed, staring out the window and seemingly not having noticed his arrival.

Sanada knows better though, and settles himself in the extra chair that the nurses brought into the room a week ago, the day after Sanada had stayed standing for a full two hours because the only chair had been occupied.

Sanada knows the nurses aren’t the ones who volunteered to bring the chair in.

Everything between them has always been like this, unsaid and silent, communicating in veiled words and emotions. But it’s what works for them, so he sees no issue with things staying this way.

And apparently, neither does Yukimura.

“I brought that tea you like,” Sanada says at last, “I gave it to the nurses already. They said they’d bring some in in a minute,”

Finally, Yukimura turns to him, and Sanada is more aware than ever of how tired his captain looks. He doesn’t think anyone should look that tired, let alone someone their age. He doesn’t say anything though, and simply sits in his usual stiff manner.

Silence surrounds them then, the only sounds those of the downpour outside, near torrential rain hitting the window and drowning out the rest of the hospital noises.

It’s almost as if they can pretend. Pretend Yukimura had never fallen ill, and they’re simply sat in either of their bedrooms, going over the team roster, or an opposing team, or even simply watching a tennis match.

Only a nurse knocking and entering breaks the spell that’s fallen, forcefully lifting the veil of make-believe as he puts a tray with two cups and a tea pot down on the table next to Yukimura, and Sanada’s usual frown deepens momentarily.

The nurse gives the both of them curious glances, and Sanada guesses the man must be confused over their silence, but that’s just how outsiders see them, isn’t it? They see two silent middle-schoolers and wonder why they’re in each other’s company.

Quite frankly, Sanada couldn’t care less about what others think of the two of them. All that matters to either of them is tennis, and that’s been ripped out of Yukimura’s control. Sanada hates it, so he brings tea, because it’s all he can do as they wait as patiently as they can for Yukimura to be able to leave this godforsaken place and return to his rightful throne on the tennis court.

The child of god has no place being in that hospital bed, pale and exhausted, dwarfed by a mere blanket.

“It’s raining.”

Yukimura’s words break the silence at last as he smooths his hands over the blanket covering his legs, and Sanada tenses.

He lets a beat pass before standing and pouring the tea, carefully wheeling the table closer so Yukimura can easily reach his cup before Sanada takes the second one and sits back in the chair, back stiff, hearing everything Yukimura just implied; you don’t have to come when it’s raining, you don’t have to come every day like this, you don’t need to care for my weak self.

“I know,” He answers, sipping his tea, admitting to himself that Yukimura has good taste.

I want to. I don’t care if it’s raining, the world could end tomorrow and I’d still come here one last time, weak or not.

Silence takes over once again, the storm raging outside a stark contrast to the peace in the hospital room.

Yukimura reaches for his tea when Sanada is already halfway done with his, the liquid considerably cooler, and the vice-captain takes in the way the pale hand trembles, and feels his heart squeeze in his chest. He lets his gaze follow that hand all the way to his captain’s mouth as he takes a sip, and watches as lips quirk into a gentle smile,

“Thank you.”

The words are quiet, and even though it’s so silent in the room, the rain is hammering against the window, and Sanada would have likely missed them had he not been watching. Waiting.

There’s nothing more to the words, one of the rare times where Yukimura speaks exactly what he’s thinking, and with a forward tilt of his head, Sanada lets his cap cover his eyes, feeling his own lips pull into the smallest of smiles,

“Of course.”

Anything for you.
