Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

vague context is vague

Shougo isn't moving, and that in itself makes Ryouta's blood boil more than the fact he managed to capture him so easily. It's so laughable to have this pitiful traitor between his claws, one inch away from slashing his neck and letting him bleed to death, just as he deserves. He will make a cut deep enough so that his agony will be true suffering.

Ryouta is pressing two fingers against Shougo's neck, teeth bared.

“I really want to end you here,” he hisses, his tails menacingly spreading around himself.

“Really, now,” Shougo flatly replies, then his lips slowly turn into a smirk. “Are you even capable of hurting anyone?”

“Do you want to see for yourself?”

He nicks the flesh, producing droplets of blood trickling down his fingers. He feels Shougo swallowing at the sudden pressure, but he's still smirking, as if he's not playing with his own life. Ryouta hasn't seen such a raw expression on his face in a long time.

“You're not being serious,” Shougo taunts. “You can't kill.”

“I've killed countless people.”

“You killed people you didn't fucking know. You can't kill someone you've been living with.”

Ryouta hates it. He hates the fury that's eating him from the inside, he hates the anger that's coloring his words, and he hates the vulnerability painted on his face. There is no reason for him to be so open, so genuine in front of Shougo, when he needs to push aside memories and feelings to use logic. Everyone has always told him he was too reliant on his emotions.

“You can't do it,” Shougo repeats, grabbing Ryouta’s wrist and squeezing.

“I've spent the last year looking for you,” Ryouta whispers. “I've spent the last year thinking about killing you!”

“You can't spout bullshit at me Ryouta, I know you're not fucking serious!”

“Shut up!”

Ryouta raises his claws and makes a dive for Shougo’s neck, but Shougo stops pretending and shoots a fireball with one of his tails. Ryouta hisses and his grip slackens, allowing Shougo to kick him in the stomach and roll away into the safety of the shadows. The pale light of the moon puts on display his mischievousness like a mask, and even if Ryouta knows that his opponent is more often than not ruthless, he hoped he’d face a Shougo willing to listen and talk. It was perhaps too foolish of him; he knows him better than anyone, and expecting him to be obedient or amiable was wishing for a dream.

Shougo rises, his tails ready for battle and his ears on full alert. He isn’t going to cooperate. Ryouta keeps glaring at him, dusting his robes as if it will make a difference in a battle they’ve enacted one too many times. The outcome isn’t certain.

“It’d be much easier if you came with me and faced the village,” Ryouta spits. “Everyone wants answers, and nobody understands why you betrayed us.”

Why you betrayed me hangs heavily in the air, and neither of them bothers pointing it out.

“The better question is how I did it,” Shougo snorts. “The village was too trusting.”

“You’re an asshole, Shougo-kun.”

Maybe he needs to discard all the memories and feelings, after all.

Ryouta’s tails stand up straight. Powering himself up is all he can do to ensure the success of his mission, betting everything on his speed—and planting his claws in the most deadly spots. Months of nurturing a hatred that he can’t even explain course through his body, pull the threads of his limbs and make him move. He lunges at Shougo, images of similar sparring sessions flashing in his mind and haunting him, but he never falters, never.

Shougo erects a barrier but Ryouta easily tears through it, sending flying shards of magic and he captures his opponent with his tails, once again, snaking around his body, like an embrace.

“You can’t win, because I still know you, even after a year.”

They are close, only a breath away, fiery brown eyes staring at satisfied grey eyes. Ryouta could imagine a world with this person at his side, once, and even if everything tells him to stop reminiscing about what is no more, the reality of facing Shougo and knowing that there are answers right there feeds the embers of neglected hope. He’s so pathetic.

“Please tell me why you left me behind.”

He doesn’t choke on his words, but his voice is so much weaker than what he wanted, and suddenly his rage doesn’t make sense anymore, except that it does and he just wants it to end.

Shougo’s smirk wobbles, only for a split second, but his eyes don’t lie (never, never).

“There’s just a better world outside, y’know?”

“I don’t fucking understand.”

Shougo reaches over, fingers brushing Ryouta’s bangs—and it’s just not fair that a single gesture breaks down all the walls he tried to put around him. One year is long and short.

“Don’t,” he murmurs.

His demand isn’t heeded. His claws ghost over Shougo’s neck, already drawing blood, but Shougo is being an insufferable prick and keeps muttering his incantation, and Ryouta wants to scream.

Shougo covers Ryouta’s eyes with his hands.

“Sleep, Ryouta.”

Ryouta’s arms go slack and his eyelids are heavy, and even though he knows it’s useless to resist, he tries glancing one more time at the man who once shared his life, and who he wants to find again, even in death.

When he wakes up, the only certainty he has is that he didn’t imagine the smile on Shougo’s face.

They told me to be more serious
They told me to be responsible
What’s wrong with being young
I just wanna feel alive

They told me this is more like it
They told me this is growing up
I don’t think this change is good
I’m not sure what I’m feeling

They told me they were proud
They told me I’m grown up now
They didn’t tell me the cost
The cost was going numb

You told me this was enough
You told me to ignore everyone else
You looked like you missed someone
Which I guess is fair

I don’t know where I went
I don’t know how to feel anymore
I don’t know how to come back

But babe-chan please
Can you help me back

The torch bobbled in Eijun’s hand as he barreled through the streets. A roar tore from his lungs, and the mob behind them shouted in reply: TO THE GATES!

Shinji kept up as best he could, but few people ever could hang with someone like Sawamura Eijun, the leader of the rebellion against their prefecture’s brutal and cruel daimyo. Crippled by poverty and starvation and grueling working conditions, the people started to fight back, and one of the loudest voices in that cry of freedom belonged to the man Shinji had promised to share his life with, for better or for worse.

This wasn't the kind of worst Shinji had in mind, but come hell or high water and most likely execution, he wasn't leaving Eijun’s side.

Two dozen men lofted a huge log, ramming it against the gates surrounding the daimyo’s keep. Blow after ringing blow filled the air, and Eijun’s fingers tightened around the grip of his sword as the wood splinters spewed from the point of contact.

The gate fell and the horde of attackers in homemade armor and makeshift weapons poured into the sea of huts surrounding the daimyo’s keep. Some of the villagers fought them and some of joined the fray. Regardless, the streets soon ran red with blood of soldiers and peasants alike.

Shinji followed Eijun closely, his bo staff fending off anyone trying to sneak up behind the group’s very loud and obvious leader. He wasn't the ardent and skilled warrior Eijun was by any means, but he had the tools to hold his own in battle.

The sounds of battle dwindled and died as a tall, heavily armored figure stalked out of the keep, a sword with a gem-encrusted pommel in one hand and a matching dagger in the other. Shinji didn’t need to stretch very far to guess the man was who they were there to find and depose.

“The daimyo,” Shinji muttered, and he swallowed hard when he saw Eijun’s fingers flex around the handle of his own sword.

A well of panic broiled in Shinji’s belly. The daimyo, Narumiya, and his bodyguard, a mountain of a man named Harada, was easily twice Eijun’s size. One blow from that sword would cut Eijun in two, and judging by the way Harada was coming straight toward them, he knew who he was looking for.

“He’ll kill you.” Shinji gripped Eijun’s upper arm tight. “Don’t take him on yourself. Please.”

Eijun shook his head and smiled challengingly. “You’re probably right, but he’ll still lose. Narumiya can’t hide forever, which is why he’s sending out his ace now.”

Shinji dropped his staff and raked his hand down his face. “Why does it have to be you?”

Turning back to his oncoming nemesis, Eijun declared, “Because it’s my destiny, Shinji. I’ve been told my whole life that Narumiya is unstoppable, that no one will ever be strong enough to challenge him. But you know what they say —” Eijun flipped his sword around in his hand and chortled. “— anything worth doing is because someone doesn’t want you do.”

“I don’t want you do,” Shinji stated simply, picking his staff back up. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Eijun and braced himself. “But you never did listen to me anyway, so I might as well keep you from getting your head chopped off by that — his sword is huge. This is a terrible idea.”

“Yep.” Eijun’s eyes glittered with challenge, and Shinji harrumphed.

Neither of them were going to come out of this alive, but if he were going to be hacked to bits, there was nobody he would rather stand next to than the gold-hearted idiot he married in spite of the war ravaging the land.

Raising his staff, Shinji said, “Let’s kill this guy.”

“Thought you’d never ask.”

AAAHHHH i was so excited to see this in my inbox, i really wasn’t sure if anyone would fill my prompt but i’m so, so happy and grateful that you did T__T i love these two so much and this glimpse into them after everything is just so good!!!

i love the way you worked the quote, i was excited to see how “like you’re used to being told that you’re trouble” would be interpreted and i loved jouichirou’s look of, ‘Am I in trouble for this, Gin-san?’ that he’d flashed across a bowl of steaming squid.
so perfectly jouichirou, i can picture that so clearly. and even if gin knows that look should make him wary, he still can’t look on Yukihira Souma and not feel relieved. AAHHhhH i die.

and this. just—just this: He leaves unsaid that he’s not spent the intervening years pining. Gin’s had his fair share of relationships, most short-lived because nothing has disrupted his love for cooking and Tootsuki. Only once did something come close to usurping that love, but that disappeared. i’m so weak for gin pining during all those years. my absolute favorite thing. it hurts but it hurts so good

Do you regret leaving? is what he wants to ask, but he’s too scared of the reply.
“I can see everything much clearer now,” Saiba replies. “And, Gin-kun, I regret nothing.”
The cloak slips from his shoulders, leaving the man he’s become, and then he smiles. “I missed you, though.”

I’M—i know i’ve quoted like half this fic but i can’t help it i just love everything about it and the end especially made me so emotional. it feels like healing which is so nice because you know, their story is so angsty but it feels like there’s hope on the horizon and it just makes me so happy T-T thank you so much for this, i’m really so grateful and i love it to pieces

Somehow this went from a heist story to something else entirely. Fun prompt!

***

The alarms were going off, red lights flashing, echoing through the massive hanger full of the Realm’s newest space bombers. They all had twin singularity drives which made them the fastest ships in the galaxy. Miyuki adjusted his glasses for automatic zoom and switched the aperture controls in his eyes to blink mode.

“You ready?” whispered Kuramochi.

“Yeah. How much time do we have?”

“Less than five minutes after the alarms turn off.”

“Anything you can guarantee?”

Kuramochi consulted his antique chronometer, frowning. “I can guarantee 4 minutes, 18 seconds.”

They were on a double-bind mission to get intel on the bombers and take down the cruiser which housed them but Miyuki hadn’t expected the bombers to be built already. Kuramochi wondered how many Modifieds they’d used to work on them. Even by Realm standards the cost must have been exorbitant.

Kuramochi had worked out that it would take Miyuki about three minutes to reach the rendezvous point once he was done getting the data on the bombers while dealing with at least two hundred Modified soldiers. The Realm’s advances into outfitting humans with military grade quanta implants in both their brains AND their bodies meant that they were far more advanced than any other weaponized government in the galaxy.

“I’m thinking this job was a bad idea,” said Kuramochi.

“You’re telling me this now?” said Miyuki turning to look at him. Miyuki’s pupils dilated as they adjusted for his close proximity, something Kuramochi always found unnerving.

“I didn’t want to dissuade you since you were so fired up about it. And I will admit that it’s been a few months since we’ve had a job this complex. And fun.”

Miyuki glanced around them but the hanger was still quiet except the alarm. “You mean a job that pays this well?”

“Hey, I know you get tired of staying on our world and testing security systems. There’s nothing interesting about that.”

Their client had come to them as a last resort having tried all the conventional ways such as sending in their operatives, bribery, ambassador visits, and summit talks but nothing worked. The Realm would not give up its secrets. The client had requested a 100% success rate and had wanted to send their own men with them but Miyuki and Kuramochi always worked alone.

The yellow alarm lights started flashing.

“Get ready,” said Kuramochi, consulting his chronometer. Miyuki was going through his last minute equipment check, touching his blaster and laser knife.

“Don’t forget to switch on your thought messaging app. I’ll meet you at the rendezvous point in a few.”

Kuramochi nodded, glancing up from his chronometer. “Remember to jump the Bright Line.”

Miyuki grinned. Kuramochi would feel his partner’s heart rate speeding up on their shared vital signs comm, making him catch his breath. Damn adrenaline junkie lived for this kind of thing.

Kuramochi slipped on his specially modified space goggles making sure they locked into place behind his ears and turned on the messaging app. At that moment the lights in the hanger went out. It was so dark that the only thing you could see were the stars and the empty vacuum of space through the huge windows but Miyuki had modified his glasses and Kuramochi’s goggles so they could see in the darkest of situations. “Even into the abyss,” Miyuki had joked.

Miyuki slipped past him, moving towards the first bomber. They only had two bombers to collect data from though Miyuki had enough resources to accommodate up to five different types of ships.

Kuramochi went in the opposite direction towards the huge hanger door. He’d managed to override most of the ship’s fail safe systems, such as emergency lighting, infrared and motion detectors, and even the doors leading in and out of the hanger. Sure, there were only a handful of people in the galaxy that had those kind of skills but he was one of them. “That’s why they pay us the big bucks,” he muttered.

Kuramochi switched his visuals to systems mode to make sure everything was in place and working properly. He glanced at his chronometer. Two minutes had passed. Miyuki’s breathing was steady, a good sign. He could hear pounding at the doors on the other side of the hanger then the edges to one of them started glowing red. The Modifieds were trying to break through with heat lasers.

“Miyuki, don’t look, but the doors.” Kuramochi sent the thought message through their secure line.

“We still on schedule?”

“Yup.”

Thought message technology was brand new but Miyuki had gotten them outfitted with it even though it was hugely expensive. He had to admit being able to send his partner messages just by thinking them had big advantages.

He saw another door at the far end of the hanger glowing red. They were trying to get through two of the doors now but still hadn’t broken through.

“Almost done, ‘Mochi.”

Kuramochi blushed and tried to force down a smile. He loved it when Miyuki called him that.

“I felt that,” Miyuki teased.

“Shut up and get your ass down here, pretty boy.” Kuramochi sent the thought and then felt a deep tickling in his chest. Miyuki was laughing, lighting up the vital signs comm in his goggles.

A crash. And a bright light at the far end of the hanger. Modifieds were streaming into the hanger.

“Your timing calculations are right on schedule, like always,” said Miyuki. This time he actually spoke the compliment. Kuramochi planted his feet and switched to combat mode on his goggles.

The power came on and Kuramochi looked up to see, and feel, his partner running towards him. He glanced down at the Bright Line in front of him and backed away, pulling out his blaster and firing at every Modified trying to kill his partner. There was a huge service container behind them. They were going to use it for cover.

Miyuki came charging at him full speed, his eyes focused and narrowed. In the last possible second, he jumped the Bright Line and two men grabbed each other, sliding behind the container.

The sound of the blasters stopped and a single set of footsteps approached. “There’s nowhere for you to go,” yelled the commander. “You’re never going to make it! If you come out now, we promised to let one of you live.”

“Live in slavery,” muttered Miyuki. He looked at Kuramochi. “Time for a retreat?”

“Yeah, I would say so.” His partner was still pressed up against him. Kuramochi would never admit it but he did like it on the occasions where this kind of close proximity was necessary.

“On my count, then, three, two, one.”

Kuramochi pressed the detonator and the Bright Line exploded sending a wall of blinding light up to the ceiling of the hanger, effectively locking out the Modifieds. Kuramochi’s goggles had switched to flight mode as Miyuki uncloaked their stealth monoship near the huge hanger doors.

Miyuki was running up the ramp. “‘Mochi, come ON!” he yelled out loud.

“Checking one last thing, just fire up the engines.” He send the thought out and didn’t wait for a response. Miyuki’s heart was hammering but the engines turned on.

Kuramochi approached the wall of light after adjusting the glare on his goggles. The Modifieds were yelling and firing at the wall but having no luck with getting through. He readjusted the structural integrity of the wall and then backed up a few steps before turning to run up the ramp.

“What were you doing?” said Miyuki from the cockpit. He was so agitated that he wasn’t sitting down yet.

“Making some modifications,” he said sliding into the seat. “We have to destroy the ship, Kazuya. 100% success rate, remember? Now sit your gorgeous ass down.”

Miyuki dropped into the seat and Kuramochi swiped the main navigation screen a couple of times. “Ready?”

“Sure am,” said Miyuki, his smile was enough to light up several planets. Kuramochi refused to be distracted.

“They should be almost through. As soon as they puncture through the wall, we’ll blow the hanger doors. After that, we have less than 10 seconds to fly out of here.”

“Sure they won’t use a tractor beam?” said Miyuki.

“I’ve already disabled it,” said Kuramochi with a huge grin.

“God, you’re amazing,” said Miyuki. “I think I’m falling in love with you, ‘Mochi. Have told you that before?”

“Yeah, every week since we won our first war game in high school,” Kuramochi grumbled.

There was a distinctive screech, like glass being stretched under cold temperatures. The Modifieds had managed to puncture through the wall of light. Kuramochi pressed the button on the screen, blowing the hanger doors. At the same time, Miyuki hit the accelerator. The stealth ship slammed Kuramochi back in his seat, stretching the skin on his face, then threw him forward as Miyuki reversed the ship suddenly so they could get into position behind the blast breaker zone.

The cruiser exploded behind them, allowing Miyuki to surf the wave blast out of there. It was a tricky maneuver but nothing was more thrilling.

Kuramochi sat back in his co-pilot’s chair. “That was pretty cool.”

“What, the wave?”

“No, you. You had the idea of setting up the explosion by retreating.”

“Yeah, but it would have never worked if you hadn’t thought of using the Bright Line and counting on the Mods to try to break through it.”

Kuramochi waved his hand. “It goes without saying, we’re awesome.”

Miyuki laughed, a sound Kuramochi would live and die for. He relaxed for the ride home.

OMG I'M BEING SO BLESSED WITH THIS PROMPT???

I absolutely adored your worldbuilding in this--one of my favorite things is reading a short piece and feeling like I'm seeing just a small part of a much larger 'verse, and I definitely got that feeling here! You integrated everything so naturally that I was never confused, and honestly it only makes me want to read more.

I also loved the flirty banter so much, both of them are such little shits and you got their voices and rapport down so well that I was totally sold and invested in their relationship here. Thank you for enjoying and filling my prompt ;w;
