Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

Captain Victor Nikiforov sat in his commander’s seat on the flight deck. They were on their way to the International Space Station and he could see that his pilot, Yuuri Katsuki, was excited.

“How’s your first day going?” he asked.

Yuuri smiled at him. “It’s a dream come true. Ever since I was small child I wanted to be up here.”

“I know what you mean.”

Yuuri was still looking at him, cheeks flushed.

“You okay?”

“I think I’m just…overexcited,” said Yuuri.

They were a small crew this time, mostly taking supplies to the ISS. Otabek Altin and Yuri Plisetsky, both Mission specialists, were on Mid-Deck in the Avionics Bay. Victor had been taken by Yuuri the first time he’d seen him. He’d looked so innocent in his glasses and seemed a bit awkward but as soon as he sat in the Pilot’s seat, he was all efficiency and did his job with grace and ease. Victor understood then why NASA had advanced his promotion to pilot so quickly.

“We’re at cruising speed, Captain,” said Yuuri, interrupting his thoughts.

“Thank you. I’m going down to Mid-Deck. Let me know if anything comes up.”

“Will do.”

Victor climbed down the ladder.

****
Victor, Yuuri, and Otabek were going over the list of supplies when Yuuri’s voice came over the intercom. “Captain, you need to come up here.”

Victor hurried up the ladder, followed by Otabek and Yuri. “What is it?” said Yuri in that sullen voice of his. Victor had overheard Yuri telling him that it was unfair they had the same sounding name but he knew he was just jealous because of Yuuri’s quick promotion to pilot. He sighed, glad that Otabek was on board. He had a soothing affect on the Russian Punk.

“It’s a radio signal, an old one,” said Yuuri.

Victor got into the commander’s seat and tapped on a screen a few times. “That’s…impossible.”

“What is it,” said Otabek.

“It’s…it looks like it’s Voyager 1.”

Yuri looked around at everyone. “What’s—.” He stopped, apparently remembering.

Voyager 1 was an early space probe launched in the late 1970s. It’s mission included flybys of some of the outer planets and moons before becoming the first spacecraft to leave the Solar System. On board was the Golden Record, an audio-visual disc in case the probe is ever found by intelligent life forms from other worlds. The disc carries photos of Earth, scientific information, and spoken greetings from people, as well as sounds and music.

Yuuri looked at Victor. “Can we hear it? Is there a audio file of it on board?”

Victor tapped on his screen. I’m sure there is, in the archives.”

“What…?” said Yuri. He looked at Otabek.

“Just wait for a minute. You’ll see,” said Otabek, patting Yuri on the shoulder.

Victor took a deep breath. “I have it here.” He pressed the button.

The sweet sounding greeting of a young boy, “Hello, from the children of planet Earth” filled the flight deck.

All four men remained silent, letting the moment stretch out.

“What’s it doing back here?” whispered Yuri, “Isn’t it supposed to be…out there?”

“Yes.” Victor looked at all of them. “I’m going to send a report to Mission Control.” I want both of you to figure out everything you can about it.”

“Yes, sir,” said Otabek and Yuri. They climbed down the ladder to Mid-Deck.

Yuuri leaned back in his seat, staring out at the blackness of space, just below his line of vision was the brilliant light from Earth. “It shouldn’t be coming back. I wonder what happened to it,” he said.

“We’ll find out soon enough.”

Victor looked up to see Yuuri staring at him. “You okay, Captain?”

“Yes, just a little shook up. Not what I was expecting. I thought we would have a routine supply run mission this time.”

Yuuri smiled. “Can any space mission be considered ‘routine’?”

“I guess you…have me there,” said Victor. He stared smiling into Yuuri’s eyes. He liked him, he really did. There was an earnestness about him that a bloomed soft tenderness in his being.

A signal from Mission Control interrupted Victor’s thoughts. He turned his attention there.

****

They’d been frantically analyzing data from the probe and Mission Control when Otabek starting yelling in Kazakh, his native language. He climbed up the ladder to flight deck, Yuri at his heels.

“Captain,” he said breathless. He was crying.

“What’s wrong?” He’d been communicating with ISS. They’d been working to find out why the space probe had returned too.

“It’s…it’s not Voyager 1,” said Otabek. He leaned over, weeping softly. Yuri laid his hand on his back, blinking away tears.

“What?”

Otabek stood up. “It’s a replica of it but with more advanced technology. Whoever built it, made it look just like it, dimensions and everything. They even used radio technology.”

Victor couldn’t speak. He looked at Yuuri.

“Do you think…there’s a golden record on board but with…their stuff?” asked Yuri.

“I need to speak to Mission Control. Now,” said Victor.

****

Youri was getting ready to sleep when he went out into the kitchen wearing his robe and slippers. The captain was standing at one of the huge windows in the Mess Hall looking out at the beautiful blue and white of the Earth below. He went to stand next to him.

“We’re…not alone,” said Victor, softly.

“Apparently not,” said Yuuri. “More importantly, you aren’t either.”

Victor felt Yuuri slip his hand in his, his warm skin a wondrous contrast to the cold vacuum of the ship and space itself. Victor smiled and wiped away a tear.

I'm so glad you liked it!

I had a great time filling it! Plus, I got to look up the Voyager 1 mission again and listen to that "Hello, from the children of planet Earth" recording. It made me tear up :)
