Excitement coursed through Shōyō’s veins, making him bounce on his seat but keeping his feet firmly off the ground to avoid the earlier incident from repeating itself.
The rude, tall black-haired boy stood up when his name was called by their homeroom teacher and he bowed respectfully.
“Yes ! My name’s Kageyama Tobio and I come from the middle school Kitagawa Daiichi. Nice to meet you all.”
He promptly sat back and even from the back of the classroom, Shōyō could see his cherry-red ears and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Cute.
He kept focusing on the broad back, only glancing periodically to take a look at the classmate introducing themselves as it was the polite thing to do.
However, when Takeda-sensei called a familiar name, he redirected his gaze.
Opposite from him, at the very back, the blond giant stood up, looking like he wished he was anywhere but here.
“Hi, Tsukishima Kei here.”
He sat back, and even the teacher seemed troubled by the lack of emotion and information. He laughed nervously before resuming the roll call.
Shōyō almost left the ground when he jumped out of his seat as his name was called.
“HI !! MY NAME IS HINATA SHŌYŌ AND I COME FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL YUKIGAOKA !! I REALLY WANNA BECOME A HERO, NICE TO MEET YOU ALL !!!”
He graced them with a blinding smile when he heard another voice.
“Dumbass, this is the Hero class, of course we all wanna be heroes.”
He blushed furiously and locked eyes with the boy near the front of the class who was looking at him tiredly. A familiar mocking snicker echoed in the classroom from the blond jerk. Shōyō opened his mouth to defend himself but before he could utter a word, Takeda-sensei clapped twice.
“Ok, kids, be nice with each other. No mocking your classmates. Good enthusiasm, Hinata-kun, you’ll need the motivation to become a pro-Hero. Kageyama-kun, we’re all very aware of that fact, but it doesn’t hurt to hear it again. And no swearing. Tsukishima-kun and you should both apologise to Hinata-kun.”
He looked at them in turn with expectant eyes. Kageyama looked sheepish, avoiding to meet the ginger’s gaze and bowed a little muttering a small “Sorry”. Tsukishima, on the other hand, wore a contorted face, like it physically pained him to do such a thing.
“We’re waiting for you, Tsukishima-kun so that I can finish the roll call.”
The blond ultimately sighed, rolled his eyes before looking at the wall and articulating a quick apology.
“Thank you, Tsukishima-kun. You can now sit down Hinata-kun.”
Shōyō executed the order and his eyes fell back on Kageyama as the introductions continued. The schedule was handed to them and as the boy looked back to hand the prints, he noticed his staring before he could look elsewhere. They kept like this for the rest of homeroom and after what seemed like an eternity, the bell finally rang and they were free.
As much as Shōyō wanted to go talk to the Kageyama guy, he hesitated for a moment as guilt overcame him from not paying any attention to what was essentially his first class at UA.
A figure loomed over him and he looked up to meet bright blue eyes and furrowed eyebrows.
“Why do you keep staring at me ?”
“I… I’m just looking up front and you happen to be there.”
He leaned in.
“You’re lying.”
He looked offended.
“I’m not !”
He contemplated him and the ginger blushed.
“Hey ! You two !”
They both turned to see the boy from the Support Department. Shōyō waved excitedly at him and he approached, grumpy Tsukishima just behind.
“You’re killing me, Yamaguchi.”
“Shush Tsukki. Heroes should help each other ! You gain nothing by staying alone in your corner.”
“I’m not alone in the corner.”
“I’m not buying any of that. Hi, guys. I was wondering if you wanted to come with us to the Supports area after classes, we’re gonna take a look at the costumes.”
Warm brown eyes shone brightly.
“WE CAN !?”
“It’s not forbidden and I can sneak you in. They gave us the password today. You’re in ?”
The two classmates threw a look at each other.
“Yes, please, we’re in !”

“Welcome to Class 1-A, future heroes! Let’s start off with introductions. When it’s your turn, please state your name and Quirk!”
“I’m Terushima Yuuji!! My Quirk is Voice, which lets me increase the volume of my voice!!! I’ll be in your care!!”
“Good morning, Class 1-C. While many of you may be here because you didn’t get into the Hero Course, don’t be discouraged! Our General Education department doesn’t get as much attention, but it is still a respectable course, and it’s just as hard to get into as the Hero Course. Let’s go around the room and introduce ourselves! If you don’t mind, please provide your name, your Quirk, and your current career goal!”
Can I sign?
“Oh! Yes, I do understand sign, if you are comfortable letting me translate.”
My name is Fukunaga Shouhei. My Quirk is Erasure, which allows me to erase the Quirk of whomever I’m looking at. My goal…
I want to be a hero.
Sometimes, Yuuji really hates how distracted he gets.
It’s not like the walk between the classroom and the cafeteria is far! But he got sidetracked talking to Shimizu, who has such a cool Quirk! He couldn’t stop himself from asking so many questions! And then a girl tripped and dropped her bag, so Yuuji had to stop and help her gather her things. And then he realized he’d forgotten his bag in the classroom, so he had to double back.
By this point, he’s so late getting to the cafeteria that there’s no empty seats at any of his classmates’ tables, and there’s no free tables either. Shit.
There is, however, someone sitting alone in the corner. Yuuji shrugs to himself before heading over. A seat is a seat, after all, and a person sitting alone is a potential new friend.
[Yuuji doesn’t notice the nervous looks the solitary person is getting from some of the other students]
“Hi!!” Yuuji greets brightly. “I’m Terushima, from 1-A! Mind if I sit here?”
The person blinks at him, a resigned look in his eyes as he signs. Do you understand sign?
“Yeah! My Quirk’s got a major drawback” Yuuji confirms with a grin, tapping his hearing aid. The person blinks again, obviously surprised. “What’s your name? And can I sit here? I don’t wanna bother you if you wanna be alone, though!”
Fukunaga, he signs with a tiny, sleepy smile. I don’t mind if you sit.
“Nice to meet you, Fukunaga!” Yuuji says, happily dropping into the seat opposite Fukunaga. “What class are you in? I think I remember seeing you at the entrance exam!”
Fukunaga’s face fell. 1-C. My Quirk doesn’t work on robots.
“Oh, that sucks!” Yuuji hisses sympathetically. “The entrance exam is so unfair!! Not every pro has a combat Quirk!!”
You… Fukunaga tilts his head. You think so? Even though you got into Heroics?
“Of course! I’m not some arrogant jerk!” Yuuji insists. “Passing the exam doesn’t automatically make someone a good hero, and failing it doesn’t mean someone can’t be a hero. Right?”
Fukunaga smiles a little wider. Right.
Shouhei isn’t bothered by the stares.
He’s used to it. Ever since his Quirk developed, people have been nervous around him, staring with poorly-disguised fear or disgust.
[You can… erase Quirks? That’s the perfect Quirk for a villain]
It doesn’t bother him that people stare, or avoid him, or call him a villain when they think he can’t hear. He’s used to sitting alone at lunch, being the last choice for group work, going through each day without a single friend.
He expects to be alone, which is why he never would have expected Terushima Yuuji.
Terushima from Class 1-A, with a smile brighter than the sun and the personality to match. A loud blond Heroics student, with a powerful Quirk and the intelligence to back it up.
Terushima and Shouhei exist in different worlds, but that doesn’t seem to matter to Terushima. They’ve already been at UA for two weeks, and Terushima still sits with him at lunch. Every day.
It’s kind of exhausting.
Terushima is energy and sunlight and noise. Shouhei is fatigue and darkness and quiet. They couldn’t be more different, but Terushima still seeks him out.
“The Sports Festival is coming up soon!!” Terushima announces as he approaches, sliding into what has become his seat. “Are you excited?!”
Shouhei shrugs. Not a big deal for General Studies. Everyone’s there for the Heroics students, and no one else makes it past the first round.
“That can change!” Terushima declared, and Shouhei raises an eyebrow.
What do you mean?
“I mean, you could totally make it past the first round!!” Terushima insists. “No one would be expecting it! Hey, we could even train together! You’re pretty fit already, you know?”
I don’t have a good Quirk for that, Fukunaga reminds. The first round is never combat. There’s no point, anyways. General Studies don’t get internships, and I don’t care about publicity.
Terushima hums thoughtfully. “Well, you could get yourself transferred to Heroics!!”
Fukunaga freezes. What?
“If you win the Sports Festival, you can show everyone that you deserve to be in Heroics!!!” Terushima nods rapidly, enthusiasm building. “That’d be so Plus Ultra!! They’d have to transfer you!”
No one has ever transferred from General Studies to Heroics.
“That just means you’ll have to be the first!!!” Terushima insists. “You deserve to be in Heroics! The Sports Festival is your chance to make everyone else agree!”
Fukunaga hesitates. You don’t even know my Quirk. I have a villain’s Quirk. You can’t say I deserve to be in Heroics.
“No Quirk is a villain’s Quirk,” Terushima says sharply, some of his usual brightness bleeding away. “I’m gonna personally fight anyone who’s said that to you. The only thing that decides if a Quirk is a hero’s or a villain’s is the person, and you? You’re a hero, Fukunaga.”
Fukunaga doesn’t know how to respond. No one’s ever told him that before, not even his parents. No one’s ever believed in him so genuinely, so passionately.
If I wanted to be the first, Fukunaga signs after a few moments, what would you suggest I do?
Terushima’s answering grin is blinding.
As the years passed, people forgot the details.
No one remembered the fact that four people teamed up in the first round, something uncommon but not unheard of. No one remembered the fact that the same four stayed a team in the second round, completely decimating the competition with the combination of their Quirks. No one remembered the third round bracket, or the strategies used.
No one remembered the details, but they remembered the results.
In fourth place, just barely missing the podium, 1-A’s Yahaba Shigeru, Quirk: Somnambulist.
In third place, with a gracious smile, 1-A’s Shimizu Kiyoko, Quirk: Engine.
In second place, beaming with pride and excitement, 1-A’s Terushima Yuuji, Quirk: Voice.
And in first place, something that no one expected, not even him? 1-C’s Fukunaga Shouhei, Quirk: Erasure.
No General Studies student had ever made it past the first round, so no one expected a General Studies student to win.
It was a new precedent, one that caught the attention of Principal Nedzu himself.
“Alright, listen up!! Quiet down, you lot! Congratulations on your performances in the Sports Festival, you’ve made me proud!! Before we start, I have someone for you all to meet! Go ahead, kid.”
I’m Fukunaga Shouhei, formerly of General Studies. My Quirk is Erasure. I’ll be joining your class. Thank you for the opportunity. I swear that I will not let you down.
“What are you guys thinking?” Yuuji asks, turning around in his seat to talk to his friends. “I think I’ve got an idea, but I wanna hear yours first!!”
“I’ve been thinking about it since my Quirk manifested,” Shimizu admits with a soft smile. “I’ll be the Turbo Hero: Ingenium.”
“Ooh, I like it!!!” Yuuji cheers, albeit quieter than he would have outside of class. “Yahaba?”
Yahaba smirks suggestively. “The R Rated Hero: Midnight.”
“Yahaba,” Yuuji groans playfully.
“What?” Yahaba asks innocently. “I need a lot of exposed skin to use my Quirk!”
Fukunaga snorts quietly, and Shimizu just shakes her head.
“It’s very you, I guess,” Yuuji admits reluctantly. “Anyways! I’m gonna be the Voice Hero: Present Mic!!!”
“I like it, Terushima!” Shimizu smiles warmly. “It suits you.”
“Thanks!!” he beams. “Fukunaga? Any ideas?”
Fukunaga shrugs. The Erasure Hero: Shouhei.
“Shouhei,” Yuuji repeats with a snort. “Fukunaga, you can’t just use your name!!”
Why not? Fukunaga asks, yawning subtly. I’m going to be an underground hero, so it doesn’t really matter.
“It still matters!!” Yuuji insists.
Yahaba nods. “Yeah, you can’t just use your name, Fukunaga! Where’s the creativity?”
I don’t care about my name. Fukunaga shrugs again. You choose, Terushima.
“Me?!” Yuuji exclaims. “Why me?!”
I trust you.
Yuuji feels his cheeks flush at Fukunaga’s casual admittance.
“Alright!! If you put that much trust in me, I’ll have to give you a great name!!!” Yuuji announces, trying to will the red flush off his face. “Umm…”
He looks around the room for inspiration. There’s so much going on, something should inspire him!! Hinata’s bouncing around, his wings out and beating in time with his hops. Lev’s on the ground, trying to stretch his arms far enough to touch the classroom wall while his feet stay firmly on the opposite wall. Ooh, Oikawa painted his nails again!! They look really cute! The clouds outside are big and puffy. Yuuji likes the way they’re making the sun look, and—
Something hits him in the forehead, and he shakes his head, trying to get his focus back as he glares at Yahaba.
“You got distracted again,” Yahaba shrugs.
“Yeah, but you didn’t need to hit me with your…” Yuuji’s whine trails off as he sees the eraser lying on his desk, the one that had bounced off his head. “Wait, that’s perfect?”
Yahaba blinks. “Huh?”
Yuuji turns fully towards Fukunaga, bouncing excitedly in his seat. “The Erasure Hero: Eraserhead!”
“Terushima,” Shimizu sighs.
“You can’t be serious,” Yahaba deadpans.
Fukunaga’s eyes sparkle. I like it.
To the continuous disdain of their friends, the name sticks.
In their second year, Kiyoko won the Sports Festival. Shouhei ended up in third place, but he didn’t particularly mind. After he decided to become an underground hero, he knew that the attention would only be detrimental.
Third year, Shouhei wasn’t even on the podium. Once again, he didn’t mind. He wasn’t bitter at all, especially since Yuuji narrowly beat Shigeru and immediately started crying, the pride of his first victory too much to handle.
Everyone remembered the results, but no one remembered the details. They didn’t remember the laughter and the tears. They didn’t remember the love between friends.
No one remembered that Yuuji jumped off the podium the second the gold medal was around his neck and kissed Shouhei for the first time.
No one remembered, but Shouhei could never forget.
Many people grow apart after high school, especially heroes. They all go off to different agencies, and they have their careers to focus on.
The four of them, as always, are the exception. Their bond only grows with each day.
Every week, they get together for dinner, drinks, even just coffee. It isn’t the details that matter, not to them.
When Shigeru decides to apply for a teaching position at UA, Yuuji immediately follows his lead and convinces Shouhei to do the same. Kiyoko deliberates for ages before deciding that she’s too busy with her agency and with Yuu, her little brother who’d somehow manifested en electric Quirk instead of the engines of the rest of the family.
Five years after they graduate, Shouhei suggests moving in together to Yuuji. At first Yuuji laughs, making Shouhei nervous, but it makes sense after Yuuji reaches into his pocket and pulls out a ring.
They have a small wedding. It’s intimate, just the four of them and their families. Kiyoko brings her girlfriend Saeko and her little brother, Ryuunosuke, who immediately latches onto Yuu.
Yuuji starts his radio show, and Shouhei never misses a broadcast. Kiyoko gets licensed to start a specialized preschool to help young kids learn to control their Quirks from an early age, and never lets any kid describe a Quirk as villainous. Shigeru opens a chain of sex shops across the country, and laughs it off when people ask if it’s appropriate for him to be a teacher.
Shouhei doesn’t have any big ambitions, but he makes a happy life for himself. He teaches, naps, patrols, naps, cuddles with Yuuji, and naps. They end up adopting four cats because Yuuji can’t say no to Shouhei.
Shouhei expels a lot of students. He knows how to spot potential, and he knows how to spot kids who’d make terrible heroes. Even with three years to teach them, some students simply won’t learn that a strong Quirk doesn’t make a strong hero, and he will not be responsible for allowing another Endeavour to graduate.
They move forward, always together, and they never stop improving.
Yuuji has always been easily distracted, and because he was late for lunch one day and sat in the corner with a General Studies kid with a villain’s Quirk, he changed the future.
He changed it for the better.
A kid with purple hair looks at him, awe and disbelief swimming in his eyes. The kid can’t be much younger than his students — maybe a junior high third year?
“You— you’re Eraserhead!!”
Shouhei blinks in surprise, not used to getting recognized. Seems like I am.
“I don’t want to bother you,” the kid says hesitantly, “but could I ask you a question?”
Sure, Fukunaga signs with a small smile.
“Can someone with a villain’s Quirk become a hero?”
I used to wonder the same thing. People called my Quirk villainous, so I believed it. But a very special person changed my mind. Fukunaga isn’t sure whether the memory is sad or happy at this point. Believing his Quirk to be villainous was painful, but every memory of Yuuji is a good one. He told me this: The only thing that decides if a Quirk is a hero’s or a villain’s is the person.
“Does that mean—” The kid cuts himself off, hope blooming in his eyes.
Fukunaga lets his smile widen. The genuine warmth is a departure from the grin he gives his students, but in that moment, it feels right.
You can be a hero.
