Haaaa! So. I saw Atobe/Echizen and couldn’t resist, even if it’s my first time trying to write Atobe… So I apologize for the ooc? I don’t really know what this is but it kind of works?
***
Atobe Keigo has faced many things in his life. Opponents of different strengths and qualities. Of weaknesses and incompetence.
And, Atobe Keigo has never met anyone quite like Echizen Ryoma.
The boy is cocky and confident, and plays tennis like it’s second nature.
Naturally, this means he is Atobe’s sworn rival; he must better himself in order to conquer the player that is Echizen, neatly wrapped in cocky smiles and flexible wrists.
So here Atobe is, at five o clock in the morning, running, running and running to improve his stamina, and not because he’s been thinking too hard about Echizen and can’t get him off his mind.
Atobe knows it’s not healthy, to focus on one single player this way. Tunnel vision is no good; it spells one’s downfall when they are too busy thinking of their next opponent instead of looking at their current match-up. So Atobe runs, and tries to clear his head of dizzying plays and entrancing footwork.
By half past six Atobe’s mind is only slightly clearer, and he has all but given up for now, knowing the busy day ahead will finish the work, effectively pushing Echizen out of his mind.
At three in the afternoon, Atobe steps onto the tennis court, brooding and grumpy, intent on decimating a couple of players from the team they’re practising against.
Echizen Ryoma refuses to leave his mind, and Atobe hates it. He hates the way he’s stopped thinking about him in just tennis terms, and started wondering what he does during his days. Atobe wonders what kinds of food Echizen likes and knows it’s not healthy to obsess about an opponent to the point where you wonder what their diet is.
So Atobe destroys player after player on the court, and still Echizen doesn’t leave his mind. Even as he pummels them to the ground and showcases his superiority to all present, Echizen is there in the back of his mind, and Atobe realizes that thinking of the boy does not, in fact, deter his playing, even when he knows that thinking of his next opponent instead of focusing on his current match does nothing but beg for a loss.
And yet, here Atobe is, thinking of a certain tennis player while destroying another, and all it does is fuel him, because he wonders what Echizen would think of him as he watches him play. Would he be afraid? Would he be excited? Would he enjoy it? Would he like to see Atobe play more? Would he like to talk to him once the match is over?
Atobe pauses as he takes a drink, and thinks that maybe this isn’t what he thought it was.
Running is futile, he realizes. For no amount of running at five o clock in the morning will help him clear his head.
After all, one cannot run from love.
