This bonus round will be open until Saturday, June 27th at 11:59pm (midnight) EDT. (Countdown)

This round is now closed!

The screening period is over! You're still able to post prompts and fills for this round but they won't count for points!
If you posted or edited a fill while comments were being screened, please use the comment unscreening form to let us know so we can unscreen it!

    • I love you
    • Home, keys, together
    • Let them go
  • Fill prompts by creating fanworks inspired by all three words, or only one or two! The choice is yours.
  • Prompts can be in any language as long as you provide an English translation!
  • You cannot earn points by filling your teammate's prompts or your own! (That said, we won't stop you from doing so for fun!)

Masako’s no good with plants. Machines she can handle, changing the oil in a car or taking her motorcycle apart and putting it back together, fixing a sputtering combustion engine, replacing a battery, but she’s never planted a seed. Her scallion ends never grow when she places them in water on the windowsill.

Alex is not that kind of plant. She’s not dependent on anyone moving her towards the light, rotating her base, placing her somewhere warm, pouring water down her throat. Her leaves unfurl and stretch toward the sun in summer when she sits outside, tangled in her hair and extending from her arm, her shoulders, between her toes. She drinks straight from the tap sometimes when she’s more thirsty, but she goes for it herself, her leaves pressed against the edge of the sink and the counter. (In the autumn, when she’s in Akita, she stays indoors more and more, in the warmth and light, a little too dry but it doesn’t hurt her the way the cold air and darkness makes her wince and draw back, though she tries to hide it.)

The rustle of her leaves in the night, when she lies sleeping next to Masako, is calming, like sleeping with the windows open in the summer, listening to the wind blow through the trees outside. They’re soft to the touch under Masako’s fingers, surprisingly responsive.

(“Does shedding them hurt?”

Alex shakes her head. “It’s like shedding a hair. It just happens sometimes.”)

She blooms when Masako visits her in LA in the spring, the sun’s warm rays in the lengthening days coming down on the white blossoms curling out against her leaves and her skin.

“It’s because I’m happy you’re here,” Alex says, no hint of irony.

Masako doesn’t point out scientific explanations and growing seasons; she won’t poke holes in that theory (and she’s no biologist; maybe all of that’s irrelevant here). A flower falls from her hair and Alex snatches it out of the air and hands it to Masako.

“Keep it with you.”

She dries it out and keeps it on her desk at work, and it smells like Alex still, heady and fragrant, like the late spring far away. One day they’ll live together and she’ll no longer need it, and Alex will shed white petals every spring, and Masako will still keep the flower tucked away somewhere safe. It will still be precious.

lowkey i feel like this could be the beginning to a way longer thing but blah blah asahi runs away from his old life in chicago and noya hitchikes with him and then they fall in love but they havent fallen in love in this. yet.

***

Asahi leans his head against the window of the car giving himself respite, just for a second. Every couple of seconds he can sense light behind his eyelids as the passing headlights reflect off the wet ground. It hasn’t stopped raining since he’s left Chicago.

Asahi had lived in Chicago for ten years. He’d never been on a road trip by himself. He’d never been in a rest stop bathroom without crying. Today was a first for everything. The road stretched out in front of him, towards New York. Towards something else. Towards a lot more firsts.

He couldn’t stay in Chicago, not when his past lurked around every corner, threatening to jump out and attack him. Years ago, Chicago had been his oasis. A place where he thought he would grow, and evolve, and stop being the scared man he was before. And he loved it there.

But it was too much. Too much safety, not enough risk. Too much root, not enough branches. Too much history, not enough creation.

And now that history had infected his oasis. A breakup here. A coffee shop where he accidentally made an old lady cry there. And he was trying. He cried less. He stood up straighter. But yesterday when his landlord had delivered his eviction notice; new construction, demolishing the whole building, he said, Asahi had simply started packing his things before he realized he was still a pushover. 10 years on his own and when other people said jump he said how high.

So he kept packing his stuff, and then put them into his car, and then told his landlord he was leaving, and not paying the remainder of the month's rent. And the road rolled steadily underneath his feet. This was uncharacteristic of him. This was absurd. This was wholly irresponsible.

And that’s why he was doing it.

He was tired of being scared, tired of being cautious, tired of treating life like it was precious glass he was going to break anyway.

A knock at his window startles him out of his spiraling thoughts.

“Hey, man!”

A smaller man peers in the window, smiling at Asahi like he’s an old friend. The old Asahi would have never opened his window to talk to a stranger, but this is a new Asahi.

He rolls his window down.

“Hello?”

“Hi, you looked kind of dead! Are you okay? Also where are you headed? Because I really need a ride and the weather says the rain is supposed to keep up and there’s no way I’m gonna catch a ride like this.”

The man’s zipped up in a hoodie with a backpack slung over his shoulder. A blonde shock of hair is dyed into his bangs and even though he’s soaked, his smile scorches Asahi from the inside out like a desert. He focuses on one question at a time.

“I’m not dead. I’m okay. I’m going to New York,” and now for the moment of truth: does Asahi take him?

“And yes. You can come along if that’s where you’re headed.”

The man doesn’t even let Asahi finish the sentence before he’s swinging the door open to Asahi’s car and climbing in, warming his fingers on the blowing heat.

“Awesome, dude! Thanks!”

Asahi tries to smile. He thinks it’s a grimace.

“No problem.”

The other man is unconcerned by Asahi’s overall….everything, and instead starts arranging his backpack at his feet. He holds up a bag of McDonalds.

“Want a snack?”

Asahi just blinks at him, mentally running calculations on how dangerous it is to be taking food from a stranger. The number falls below where inviting a stranger into his car is, so he grabs a fry.

“I’m Nishinoya Yuu, by the way! My friends call me Noya though.”

Nishinoya looks at him expectantly.

“Oh, I’m, uh, Azumane Asahi. Nice to meet you.”

Nishinoya grins at him as he leans forward, fiddling with Asahi’s radio.

With nothing left to do or say, Asahi puts the car in drive and gets them onto the road. It’s only as they merge onto the highway when Nishinoya chooses a station of obnoxious pop music and turns the volume all the way up does Asahi start to doubt his choices.
