Akaashi has always fallen back and had to catch himself, pick himself back up and all the missing pieces. At least, that’s what he did when he was younger. He’s over thirty now, still stuck in the same job he’d been in when he was twenty-two, still trying to push his way into the other departments. “We need you here!” They say but Akaashi doesn’t want to be there, but he’s good at what he does so he can’t just leave. It’s the same in the other departments, the workload and the work itself, but Akaashi can’t leave his department hanging.
But at least when he falls now, misses a deadline, he doesn’t have to be the only one to help pick up the pieces.
Osamu is there, waiting, arms open and catching him in the most perfect trust fall. He’s there with a warm bag of onigiri, made with finessed and practiced hands. Akaashi has watched him make onigiri hundreds of times now, yet he’s always surprised at the art and skill work Osamu puts into them.
“It’s all in the way you move your wrist,” Osamu explains, but Akaashi doesn’t think that’s it at all. It’s the way Osamu curls his fingers, gently so he doesn’t smush too much, packing it nice and tight and whole so all the warmth stays inside.
He must be putting magic in them too because they’re always amazing, but that might just be Osamu’s touch. Everything he does is with care. When he picks Akaashi up from work on the evenings the shop closes early, he’s always got a plastic bag holding their food around one wrist, and the other extends towards Akaashi, waiting.
Akaashi slips his hand into the one offered to him and it feels just like home, their fingers laced together and tight. Despite always working with his hands, Osamu’s are soft and firm, not at all rough like they probably were in high school.
“How do you get your hands so soft?” Akaashi babbles under the stars as they walk towards their apartment.
The laugh Osamu lets out is rich like chocolate, “It’s a secret.”
Akaashi just holds on tighter, shuffling a little closer as they pass by crowds in the street. As long as he holds onto Osamu’s he’s secure, he reminds himself. Osamu keeps him safe and secure.
When they get home on those evenings, the onigiri is devoured first, with Akaashi speaking between bites, and with his mouth full. Osamu has seen everything, so he’s not disgusted; if anything, it’s endearing the level of comfort Akaashi has with him. Akaashi, who is wound so tight it’s a miracle he doesn’t snap at any given moment. Akaashi whose nerves get the best of him and he can’t get into a packed train without Osamu’s hand in his, or something to hold onto. If Osamu isn’t there, it’s a small keychain of Onigiri Miya’s mascot that Osamu had made just for Akaashi and his anxiety. “To remind you of me when I’m not there.”
When the onigiri is gone, warm hands find Akaashi shoulders, moving under his shirt, pressing into the muscle and all that is bunched together, slowly kneading it apart.
“You’re tense.”
“It’s work.”
A soft hum, nothing but quiet as Osamu works all of his muscles so they unravel and Akaashi is nothing but a puddle on their couch. He’s got hands that make him stretch like putty and they’re Akaashi’s hands to hold and lean on when he’s about to fall.

It wasn’t raining as hard as they stepped out of the restaurant, but Tetsu still opened his umbrella and stepped next to Jun in order to shelter them both with it.
“It was good to see you,” said Jun as Chris opened his own umbrella. “Don’t be a stranger.”
“You too. Take care.” Chris glanced between them and smiled. “Both of you.”
Jun gave one last wave as he watched Chris walk away. “That...went well.”
Tetsu was still looking down the street where Chris had disappeared. His expression gave nothing away as he nodded. “It did.”
Jun scratched the stubble on his chin. “Though Chris is kind of…”
“Yeah.”
“I mean, a real nice guy but…”
“Terrifying.”
Jun barked out a laugh. “Yeah. Basically. Is your college going to have to play his?”
Tetsu nodded. “I’m looking forward to it.”
“You would.”
And Jun knew his grin must look a little feral, but Tetsu only smiled back at him in his mild-mannered way.
“Shall we?” asked Tetsu as he started walking.
“Lead the way,” replied Jun as he fell in step with him.
And hadn’t that always been the way?
Well, that had almost always been the way.
Jun’s time at Seido had been a series of disappointments really. He had graduated Middle School with so many big dreams. He was going to become the Ace of the team and he was going to lead the powerhouse school to Koshien. None of those things ended up coming true.
The one thing that never disappointed Jun--the one thing he never regretted--was Tetsu.
Jun had wasted a lot of time trying to be better than Tetsu and then wasted even more time struggling to come to terms with the fact that he never would be. It was sometime late in his First Year or early in his Second Year when Jun realized what a gift he had been given. That he had found someone better than a rival.
He had found a friend.
A friend that, in many ways for many different reasons, was the best person Jun knew.
Tetsu accepted him. He never told Jun he was too loud or too aggressive or too much. Instead, he had seen his gruff, in your face demeanor as something necessary to the team. But more than that...he had seen past all of Jun’s bluster. Tetsu had taken the time to get to know him in a way that few people bothered. He listened and learned and trusted--
And it wasn’t until his Third Year that Jun realized...well…he’d put himself in Tetsu’s hands in more ways than one.
They stopped at the crosswalk as they waited for the light to change. And Jun was content to stand next to Tetsu in silence. He listened to the sound of the rain against the umbrella and the sound of the passing cars' tires against the wet pavement. And...it was nice.
Except Tetsu was looking at him out of the corner of his eye and Jun shifted from one foot to the other before finally just flat out asking, “What?”
“Your hands…”
“What about my hands?”
Jun pulled his hands out of his pockets in order to inspect them. They looked like...hands. Blunt, short nails and calloused palms. They had been worked into tools of the trade. They were hands that could catch a baseball, throw a baseball, hit a baseball--
Tetsu reached out and interlaced their fingers.
“You’ve always had gentle hands.”
Jun looked away knowing full well there was no way to hide the way he was blushing. “That’s not true.”
Tetsu hummed. “You’ve always taken care of everyone and everything with these hands.”
Jun laughed. “More like with my smart mouth.”
And it took a moment, but Jun eventually realized what he had said. And he felt his eyes go wide. And he opened his mouth to say something, anything--
Except Tetsu nodded solemnly as if Jun had said something profound. “That’s also true.”
And before Jun realized what was happening Tetsu leaned in. And pressed his lips against Jun’s. And Jun barely registered the feeling--feather-light and warm--before Tetsu pulled away.
It had happened so quickly that Jun hadn’t done anything. He hadn’t even closed his eyes. He just...stood there.
And yet Jun couldn’t remember the last time his heartbeat this quickly. Probably not since Winter Training Camp when Coach Kataoka tried to kill them. Except it didn’t feel like Jun was dying. In fact, he had never felt so painfully alive.
Jun swallowed. His eyes darted away and back again as he mumbled, “The light changed.”
“Oh,” said Tetsu as he stepped into the crosswalk. “It did.”
Jun stumbled after him. His feet felt heavy and clumsy--but his hand was still gripping Tetsu’s hand. Anchoring him. Connecting him. And Jun found himself falling into the familiar pattern.
Tetsu led and Jun followed.
And Jun ducked his head as he grinned--as Tetsu’s thumb absently traced along the back of his hand. Their palms, their fingers, warm against the chill in the air.
