Miyuki wasn’t sure what he was doing.

Well...that wasn’t exactly true. He knew exactly what he was doing. The reason why he was doing it was a little less clear.

Chris had graduated.

And Miyuki realized that he was running out of time.

There never seemed to be enough time. It never seemed like the right time. But if Miyuki was going to do this--

Chris opened the door to his dorm room. He had changed out of his formal school uniform and yet he wasn’t wearing the loose t-shirts and track pants that he usually wore around the dorms. Chris was neatly dressed in jeans and a v-neck shirt and both fit like--they both fit. The styling product in his hair had lost some of its hold. Causing a few strands to fall loosely across his forehead.

He didn’t look like a High School kid anymore. He looked like he had already started moving on.

That somehow warmed...and broke Miyuki’s heart.

“Hey, Chris-senpai, congratulations on graduating.”

“Thanks,” replied Chris with a smile as he turned back towards the suitcase he was packing.

Miyuki stepped into the dorm room and kicked off his shoes. It looked like Masuko and Makihara had already packed up their belongings and cleared out. Meaning that Chris was here alone. Meaning Miyuki was alone with Chris.

Logically that had been exactly what Miyuki wanted. But logic had nothing to do with the sudden nervous churring in his stomach.

Chris gestured towards his desk. “I left my notebook out for you.”

“Oh,” said Miyuki, picking up the familiar black notebook. He leaned up against the desk as he absently paged through it. “Thanks for this.”

“I’m not sure how much good it’ll really do you,” said Chris with a shrug.

At that, Miyuki closed the notebook and looked up. “Well...it won’t be as helpful as actually having you here, but I’ll make due.”

Chris huffed a laugh as if Miyuki had said something funny. “Miyuki, I’m pretty sure you already know everything that’s in that notebook.”

“That’s not true,” replied Miyuki. “I have no idea what workout scroll Sawamura is supposed to be on.”

Chris smiled as he neatly folded up one of his dress shirts. “If Sawamura can’t remember that himself then you’re really in more trouble than that notebook can help.” Chris lay the shirt in his suitcase and glanced at Miyuki before moving on to the next shirt. “You’re going to be fine--you’re all going to be fine without me.”

Miyuki’s hand tightened around the notebook before he forced himself to relax. “If you say so, senpai.”

Chris hummed in confirmation as he packed up the last of his shirts and moved on to his school blazer. And Miyuki watched Chris’ hands as they folded and pressed. Even performing this small, mundane task he moved in the smooth, steady way that Miyuki had always associated with him.

And Miyuki could feel the last of his time running out. Could feel it as Chris tucked the jacket in on itself. And Miyuki knew that it was finally now or never.

Logic told him to say something. Nervousness still made him hesitate.

Miyuki cleared his throat as he glanced out of the dorm window. “So...now that you’ve graduated I guess you won’t need your school uniform anymore.”

Chris paused. His hands stilled as he turned his attention towards Miyuki. Chris tilted his head slightly as he considered the question.

“That’s...true?”

“And I mean...if you don’t need your jacket anymore. I could probably use a spare button.”

At that, Chris gave up all pretense of packing. He dropped his jacket and turned towards Miyuki. “I’m sorry. You want what?”

And now Miyuki knew he was blushing. He ducked his head. His hands tightening on the notebook. And Miyuki was cursing himself because he couldn’t have been happy with just having the notebook. He had to get the silly idea of the button stuck in his head.

The idea of having something from Chris that had nothing to do with baseball.

Miyuki ran a hand across the back of his neck. “You know, if I ever lost a button it would be a real pain to try to find a replacement. I’ve got enough going on. I can’t be bothered with worrying about little things like that, you know?”

Chris’ lip quirked up into a half smile. “I know.”

“And I like being prepared, you know? So having an extra on hand would only be me properly preparing for the eventuality--”

Chris laughed, effectively cutting off Miyuki’s rambling. He was still smiling as he said, “I know, Miyuki. Did you have any particular button in mind?”

“No,” muttered Miyuki. “Not really.”

“Oh?” replied Chris as he picked up his jacket and started to pull at the third button.

“No, that’s not--” Miyuki cut himself off and let out a long sigh. “You’re really going to make me say it?”

“Say what?”

Miyuki glared--for all the good that did. Chris just blinked back at him trying to look clueless. He wasn’t very good at it.

And Miyuki couldn’t help the laughter that escaped from him because what the hell was he doing? He wasn’t the type of person who talked so indirectly and Chris wasn’t the type of person to pretend he didn’t know what was going on. No. That wasn’t them.

They had always faced their challenges head on.

So Miyuki squared his shoulders and straightened his spine and put on the kind of smile that usually pissed people off and asked, steady and sure,

“I was wondering, Chris-senpai, if I could have your second button?”

Chris shot Miyuki a slow grin. “I never thought you’d ask.”

“Really?”

“Really,” confirmed Chris as he picked up his jacket again. He tugged at the second button to tear the threads. “I thought I was going to have to offer it to you myself.”

Miyuki let out a short disbelieving laugh. “What? Would you have?”

Chris successfully removed the button. He looked at it for a moment before holding it out for Miyuki with a grin. “You’ll never know now.”

“Oh?” laughed Miyuki. “So this was a war of attrition?”

Chris shrugged and the look in his eyes was nothing but fond. “I mean...it’s us, you know?”

Miyuki reached out and accepted the button. His fingers curling around it--and Chris’ outstretched hand.

“Yeah…I know and I wouldn't want it any other way.”
