Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

I know that when the time is right, I won't have to ask. You're on my side.

I see it when you relieve our foes of their skulls. When you embed those tiny, edged trinkets into their hearts. When you pierce them with your Light. And it is captivating.

But Earth casts no Shadow. Not yet.

When you're ready, you will be magnificent. A Guardian of Guardians. Shadow of Shadows.

I reserve the right to be last when the end comes, and for that, I need you with me.

You're so close.

I wasn't sure how this one was going to turn out. Hope you like it!

***
He slid into the wooden stool of the bar and looked around. He hadn’t seen a bar in months and there were two other people there besides the bartender. He’d called it a bar but there wouldn’t be any alcohol. The world had run out of alcohol long ago and the remaining people had forgotten how to make it.

The bartender didn’t bother to wait for an order instead he slide a cold glass bottle of clear liquid in front of him. Kuramochi slid the dark hood from his face revealing messy, almost shoulder length hair tipped with green.

He stared at the bottle.

“Is that—?”

“Water. Yes.” The bartender had long, wavy hair tucked behind his ears and large, soulful eyes.

“Where did you get bottled water?”

“Found a cache, dragged it here.” His voice was melancholy.

Kuramochi raised his eyes to him and nodded. “Thanks. It’s a real treat.” He pulled off one of his tattered fingerless leather gloves and broke the seal on the bottle then he closed his eyes and drank slowly. The water reminded him of a long lifetime ago. He remembered drinking water from a cup after running bases and sliding home. He remembered the smell of the dust and cheers from people he’d cared about. He opened his eyes, smiling slightly.

“You look familiar,” said the bartender. “Do you know me?”

Kuramochi shook his head. He only remembered one person now, everyone else had fallen by the wayside.

“I think I know you but I can’t remember,” said the bartender. “Weird since I can barely remember my own name at times.”

Kuramochi leaned forward. “What is your name?”

The bartender looked down at the counter, obviously trying to recall. “Chris,” he said after a moment. “What’s yours?”

“Kuramochi but I think that’s my last name. I don’t remember my first name anymore,” he said. “Does that ring a bell?”

Chris shook his head. “No, but there’s something familiar about you.”

Kuramochi finished his water and carefully placed the glass bottle on the counter. He stood up, pulled out his sword, and went to the two others sitting nearby, killing them quickly.

“Merciful,” said Chris. Kuramochi turned to look at him, still holding the dripping sword.

“I try to be. It’s only fair.”

Chris sighed. “I knew you were a Guardian when you walked in which is why I gave you the water. It’s the last bottle. I’ve been hanging on to it for just this moment.”

“I appreciate it,” said Kuramochi. The two men stood staring at each other. People never fought back or begged him to reconsider killing them anymore. It had been that way for years now. “Any preferences? Anything you want to say or do?”

Chris didn’t speak, he just kept staring at him. He frowned. “You’re a fast runner.”

“How did you know that?”

“I remember you…running. Stealing, if that makes sense. And you had greener hair.”

“All of that is true. Even the stealing though I’ve forgotten what that was about.”

“Me too,” Chris smiled a little. “I’m glad I remembered something. I just wanted one more memory and you’ve given it to me. Thanks.”

Kuramochi smiled at him sadly. He adjusted his grip on the sword and stepped forward.

****
He calculated that it had been three maybe four days since he left Chris’ bar but he still remembered his peaceful face while he watched him die. Memories were fragmented experiences at best and most of his short-term memory disappeared before the day was finished. He was on his way to his final destination, picking up the pace, now that he knew for sure that he’d killed the last person the previous day. He couldn’t remember what the person looked like or even if they’d said anything to him yet Chris’ gentle smile lingered for some reason.

The landscape was harsh with light. He’d thought that end of the world would be all about darkness and desolation but there were still small plants here and there as he stepped carefully along the cracked earth. The light was unrelenting though it was cold and the ever present wind cut across his face like knives, causing to pull his cloak tightly around him.

When the smell in the air changed, he knew he was getting close. It felt like he’d spent lifetimes following and then chasing after him. Maybe he had. The sound of the waves told him he’d finally made it. He walked to the sandy cliff and looked out.

The sea was black.

It reflected the light so harshly that Kuramochi had to close his eyes. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a pair of sunglasses. He’d known the only way he could look out at the ocean was if his eyes were filtered. He glanced at the sandy black beach, frothy white capped waves rolling in, and looked out at the water.

“Finally made it?”

Kuramochi caught his breath and turned around. “How long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough to see you getting all sentimental.” A diabolical smile. “Still remember my name?”

“Ryousuke.” Kuramochi stepped forward and gently pulled down his hood revealing a head of shoulder length pink hair. His eyes were half closed as always but Kuramochi knew he was a keen observer.

“Your hair’s no longer so green. I liked it that way.”

“You’re still short.”

“Yeah, I never did grow into those clothes, did I?” Ryousuke reached up and gently touched Kuramochi’s cheek. “Look at you, bursting with light.”

Kuramochi placed his hand on Ryousuke’s and closed his eyes. They didn’t have much time yet he wanted these few moments. He took a deep breath and moved closer. He felt his sunglasses being removed and then the warm touch of Ryousuke’s lips and he tentatively took him in his arms. He was surprised Ryousuke was such a gentle kisser.

When they pulled apart, Kuramochi was out of breath. He stepped back. “You’re not trying to persuade me to stop, are you?”

“No, I’ve always wanted to do that. Might as well do it now. You’ve always been so close that I could feel you sometimes when I was falling asleep. It seemed like we were together so often even though I was the only person around for miles.”

Kuramochi took a deep breath and gripped his sword. Ryosuke smiled again until Kuramochi hesitated.

“What’s wrong?”

“Do you remember someone called…Chris?”

He frowned. “Does that have to do with all the running and catching you’ve mentioned before?”

“Maybe. I killed him a few days ago and he said he remembered me running and stealing.”

“That sounds like you. What were you stealing?”

“I have no idea.”

They watched each other. Kuramochi could hear the waves crashing louder on the beach below. He slowly drew his sword.

“I’m sorry I won’t see you go to Shadow. I’d give anything to see that,” said Ryousuke

“I’m sorry too.”

“I hope it’s quick for you. I don’t like the thought of you being all alone out here. I don’t like the idea that you could be lonely.”

Kuramochi stepped forward and kissed him on the forehead. “I always have you here,” he said patting his chest.

Ryousuke nodded. Kuramochi studied his face, trying to remember it. He breathed in the black sea air and ran him through with his sword.

****
It happened right away. Kuramochi had dropped to his knees and was crying softly over Ryousuke’s body when he felt the Shadow stirring behind his eyes. He looked around, he only had a few seconds before it took over completely so he reached out and touched Ryousuke’s face for the last time. And then the Shadow was upon him, devouring his being. The last thing he saw was the Shadow spreading to the ground and to Ryousuke’s body. It wouldn’t take long for it to take over the world, putting an end to it’s existence.

ahhh sorry for commenting so late! i have since read up on destiny and its larger context and this quote still hits me really hard so thank you so so much for filling this!

the worldbuilding here is fantastic, from chris' cameo to the idea of their past lives in baseball still resonating as they approach the end of the world. memories being fragments to collect and treasure in a desolate landscape is such a nice detail. it's just very moving that they're reunited right before the end, that kuramochi is the endbringer and that he's trying to extend what little he has before he does his duty

thanks for this, i love it a lot!!
