Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

“They complained,” Yakov says as soon as Victor walks in, which he takes as his hello. Two weeks after the World Championships, they’re back for the first day of off-season practice and at seventeen, Victor just added another gold to his collection. The Sports Champions Club is nearly empty, and the early morning sun filters through the wide glass windows and onto the ice, giving it a hazy glow. Victor doesn’t meet Yakov’s gaze, just stares across the ice. “The Federation. Said your exhibition piece at World’s was – ah – indecent.”

“It’s an exhibition, Yakov, it’s more lenient,” Victor replies after a moment. “Surely the Federation wouldn’t want to compromise the artistic integrity – ”

“They wouldn’t,” Yakov says. “Except when you skate to a song that encourages its listeners to – ”

“Yes?”

“ – take their clothes off,” he manages.

“Hot in Herre,” Victor supplies helpfully, like Yakov will ever be able to forget any word of that song. (Like Victor will ever be able to forget watching Yakov’s brain eject itself from his head as the song played out over the stadium speakers instead of Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20.) Victor smiles sweetly. “Tell me, was there anything wrong with the technical components of the program?”

“You know there wasn’t,” Yakov says.

“It had every component we’d agreed on,” Victor says. “I always want my programs to surprise the audience and you saw the stadium – it worked. And after you switched around my free skate choreography last-minute, I didn’t think you’d mind if I did the same.”

“That’s entirely – ”

“Valid, yes, thank you.”

“Someday,” Yakov mutters. “Someday, I pray you will last long enough to become a coach. And I pray you will get a student just like you. They will never listen, even when you know best, and then you will get to deal with the fallout, alone.”

Victor blinks.

“The Federation,” Yakov says through gritted teeth, “would simply like to encourage you to carry a little more…dignity in your exhibition pieces.”

“I always do,” Victor smiles.

–––

Half a year after World’s, Victor’s just placed second at the Grand Prix Finals, and it’s his evening plans that he’s really looking forward to, including numerous after-parties in various hotel rooms and a quick catch-up with Christophe. But it’s late afternoon and the stadium is dark now, save for a soft spotlight on the center of the ice. The place hums with the constant whispers and camera shutters as he stands by the boards before his exhibition. He only has to get through this.

“Victor, I need you to promise me,” Yakov grabs his arm. “Nothing inappropriate. You are skating to Rachmoninov, and you will enjoy it.” Privately, Victor’s not sure he’s ever heard the word “enjoy” used in the same sentence as Rachmoninov.

“Nothing inappropriate,” he agrees before taking one final sip of water, stepping out of his skate guards, and skating to the middle of the rink. Yakov nods after him.

Half a minute later, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” begins to blare from the speakers overhead, and Victor starts his footwork before launching into a soaring triple flip.

From where he lands, he can spot Yakov’s face turning beet-red near the kiss and cry.
