Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

You are knee-deep in a muddy river and the water lapping at your shins is sun-soaked, dappled with shadows. There is a catfish in your hands. You don’t know how it got there, only that this is not the right way to catch catfish; everybody knows you can’t catch a catfish with your bare hands like this and the barbs round its mouth are pricking your skin and then you hear laughter downriver, hear the sound of splashing as she comes up to drape a towel round your shoulders. Well done, well done, my clever girl. She puts your fingers in her mouth one by one and licks the blood off. You wake up and your hand’s still stinging.

She brushes your hair with a comb made of ivory. Harvested, she’s quick to tell you, from an elephant carcass they found on the plain; she would never do anything as crass as kill an elephant just for its tusks. As she hums a catchy little ditty, you close your eyes and ask what she did with the rest of the elephant. You can feel her smile at your ear as she says, I broke a few knives that day, but it was worth it. She lets the comb fall to the dressing table. Your hair spills round your shoulders, free from their braids, and her hand drifts down to your waist and presses into your ribs. Right here, that’s where it tastes best.

She always leaves your house in a mess when she goes. Her brown sweater, her favourite white ribbon, all those odd specimen jars she brings back and leaves scattered around the dining table, upon the stove in a water bath, on the windowsill if they need sunning. You don’t know what’s in any of them, only that you don’t want to try, never mind if it looks like a harmless leaf. You have learned that the most colourful beetles are the most venomous. The flowers that smell the sweetest are the ones that leave you in a cold sweat. You put all her things on top of the shoe rack. Where other people keep their shoes, you organise the pieces of her she left behind.

The evidences of love are fickle. One day, a fish is a trophy you carve up and eat together, raw and glistening upon her tongue, upon yours, and the flesh so very tender; the next day, a fish is just a fish. A knife is just a knife. You, trained in all kinds of dances, can wield a knife as easily as you wield a paper fan. One is an instrument of death. The other is an instrument of beauty. More and more, you find that you do not know which is which, especially when you are with her.

My clever girl. She brushes your hair out a hundred times and massages your shoulders. So tense, she laughs, and the sound is sensuous and slippery as that fish you caught once in a dream. You let her kiss your neck. Her lips are like the catfish’s barbs on your bare skin. In the morning, she’ll be gone again and you are tangled knee-deep in your covers. This time, there is no water, only the memory of your fingers in her mouth.
