In the span of two weeks, Victor and Yuuri had visited well over a dozen flower shops. But their visits to every single one always yielded the same results, which were unfortunately, walking out of each shop no closer to agreeing on what the centerpieces for their wedding should be.
The problem was, or so it seemed, that they both had very different ideas for the wedding in their minds, plus the fact that they were both equally stubborn.
But today, as they were pretty much down to the last flower shop in Hasetsu, they decided they were going to agree on something. They really didn’t want to put it off any longer, as it was one of the last pieces of the planning they needed to do and they both wanted it checked off the list.
Yuuri was the first one to walk into the little shop, with Victor following close behind him. When the door opened, a little bell at the top of it rang, grabbing the attention of a little old lady behind the counter.
“Hello and welcome!” She greeted happily, standing up from the stool she was sitting on, “Can I help you with anything today?” The woman spoke English, which was a nice change considering a lot of the other people in previous shops did not.
The two of them looked at each other and then back at the lady, nodding.
“Oh yes,” Yuuri responded, maybe a little too desperately. “You see, we’re supposed to be getting married at the end of the summer here in Hasetsu and we absolutely cannot agree on centerpieces.”
“Oh? And why is that?” The woman asked, raising a brow.
“We... haven’t exactly decided on colors for our theme yet,” Yuuri responded sheepishly.
Victor nodded, “It’s not like we haven’t talked about it, because we have! But we can’t seem to pick just one or two.”
The woman couldn’t help but to laugh a little. “Don’t worry, boys, I think you have come to the right place!”
Of course, that’s exactly what the people at the last three shops said too, and that got them nowhere. But maybe, just maybe, this was the right one. Or at least Yuuri hoped it was going to be, because frankly, he was sick and tired of flower shopping.
“If I may ask, what is your theme?”
“Life and love,” Victor announced proudly, giving Yuuri’s hand a squeeze.
“That’s a beautiful theme,” she commented with a smile before walking out from behind the counter. “Now tell me, do either of you have a favorite flower?” She glanced over at Yuuri first, waiting for his answer.
“Blue orchids are my favorite.”
“And mind are pink hibiscus!” Victor chimed in.
The woman nodded, pursing her lips as she thought. “Pink and blue are certainly beautiful colors.”
“But we don’t want the wedding to look like cotton candy!” Yuuri told her before she could say anything else.
Laughing, she walked over to the two men. “You’re right, I wouldn’t either.”
“Well, I certainly wouldn’t mind,” Victor mumbled under his breath, earning himself a nudge from Yuuri.
“Maybe this will change your mind…” He trailed off, looking at Victor and hoping he would respond with his name.
Yuuri had to nudge him again before he even realized. “Oh! I’m Victor, and the love of my life here is Yuuri.”
“Both of you have lovely names,” she commented. “You can call me Hana. Now, as I was saying,” she trailed off as she moved to the right side of the shop which was filled with shelves of different flower arrangements. She stopped at one that contained quite a bit of blue orchids. “Blue orchids typically symbolize strength, which is a wonderful quality to have, but is it really something you want for your wedding?”
Victor and Yuuri exchanged looks and then shook their heads simultaneously.
“And pink hibiscus symbolize rare and delicate beauty. Another wonderful thing, with deep meaning, but I’m not sure about for a wedding.”
Yuuri was kind of shocked, already Hana-san had debunked the ideas of using their favorite flowers. Only two of the other shops even asked that question, and immediately they started making bouquets with the those flowers to show the two of them. Of course, that sparked the argument of the wedding looking like cotton candy, which never ended in any sort of agreement.
“So what flowers would you recommend we go with, Hana-san?” Yuuri asked. Maybe her recommendations would be better than all the other shops.
Hana thought about it for a moment, then gestured for the two of them to follow her to the other side of the shop, where she stopped near a table full of roses. “Roses seem to be a very popular wedding choice. The blue rose symbolizes love at first sight, while the pink one symbolizes grace. Of course, that doesn’t really resolve the whole cotton candy color scheme. But you could always do red and white roses together, which often means united.”
Yuuri nodded, releasing Victor’s hand so he could softly touch a few of the roses. “Red and white might be nice…” he commented, tilting his head to the side to get a different angle of them. “What do you think, Vitya?”
“Vitya?” Yuuri called out again when his fiancé didn’t answer. He turned around so he could look for him, only to find that Victor had wandered over to a nearby corner of the shop and was gently touching a few purple flowers.
Hana took notice of the same thing and made her way over to where he was standing. “Ah, I see you have taken a liking to the bell flower. It symbolizes everlasting love, which I believe is a pretty wonderful thing to have at a wedding.”
“I agree,” Yuuri stated, walking up behind the two of them, “And it’s a very beautiful flower. Maybe this could be the one?”
Victor smiled at the flower, then turned to Yuuri and Hana. “I agree. I’d love to see this one in our centerpiece.”
“Wonderful!” Hana exclaimed excitedly, “I think I have the perfect idea for you two, then. Just give me one moment.” With that, she turned from them and headed towards a door at the back of the shop, leaving Victor and Yuuri alone with all the various flower arrangements.
In the silence, Yuuri turned to Victor and took his fiancé’s hand. “Hey Vitya, I’m sorry for arguing with you so much about the centerpieces. I guess… I just got nervous. This is one of the last things we have to do for the wedding, and checking it off the list would just make it all so real, I guess?”
“Is that a bad thing?” Victor asked, concern written all over his features.
Immediately, Yuuri shook his head. “No, no, not at all, Vitya. It’s more like… sometimes I can’t believe this is actually happening because I think it’s just too good to be true. I mean, you’re perfect, and you’re perfect for me, and sometimes I feel like I love you so much that my heart’s going to explode.” Shyly, Yuuri turned his gaze to the wall next to them. “Sorry, that’s probably really corny.”
The smile on Victor’s face grew with every word Yuuri spoke. How did he get so damn lucky? And how could anyone blame him for the tears that were now threatening to spill onto his cheeks? He pulled Yuuri into a hug, burying his face in the crook of his neck and holding onto him tight. “You’re going to make me cry, Yuuri,” he mumbled into his fiance’s shirt before pulling back from the hug just enough to lock eyes with Yuuri. “I’m sorry to, zolotse. But you’re right, you’re so, so right. I never thought I would find anyone who could love me for me… and now I have you, and I’ve never been so happy. So I feel exactly the same way you do.”
Smiling from ear to ear, Yuuri grabbed the collar of Victor’s shirt and pulled him forward so he could give him a kiss. It was a long kiss, probably longer than it should’ve been considering they were in public. In fact, the only reason Yuuri ever stopped kissing Victor was because he heard clapping coming from the other side of the room that made him realize they were not alone.
“I now pronounce you husband, and husband!” Hana announced as Yuuri and Victor turned to look at her.
Victor couldn’t help but to giggle. “Hear that, Yuuri? We’re married now!”
“You are, and it was quite beautiful to watch! Plus, it only further convinced me that the flowers I picked out are the ones for you two.” Hana grabbed a vase that she placed on the counter while she was clapping and walked it over to the two lovebirds, putting it on a table nearby.
The vase was filled with three different flowers, one purple that Yuuri recognized as the bell flower, one pink, and one white. It was beautiful, undoubtedly the best arrangement Yuuri had seen in all their weeks of flower shopping.
“Alright, so what we have here is an arrangement that includes bell flowers, which you already know mean everlasting love. But joining those are ranunculus, the pink ones, which mean, I am dazzled by your charms. That certainly seems to fit you two considering what I just witnessed.”
Yuuri’s cheeks heated up at the mention of their little public display of affection before and he couldn’t help but wonder just how much Hana had seen and heard.
“And finally, we have stephanotis, the white flowers. Those mean marital happiness, which is perfect seeing that you’re getting married and you both deserve to be happy.” She paused to glance down at her arrangement before looking back up at the couple. “So, what do you think?”
“I love it,” Victor announced first, “The colors are beautiful, it doesn’t look like cotton candy, and I think the meanings of the flowers match us very well. What do you think, Yuuri?”
“I’m in agreement with my fiancé, this arrangement is perfect. You have outdone yourself, Hana-san. Thank you so much!” Yuuri released Victor’s hand so he could properly bow to the florist in gratitude.
Victor followed suit in bowing and thanking Hana, then walked up to the counter with her so they could discuss details like shipping and price.
Next to him, Yuuri stood smiling, his heart full of happiness knowing that he was getting married to the most wonderful man in the world, and that they would have the most beautiful flower arrangements he could’ve hoped for.
