Seventeen
It was late, and the gym had almost cleared out; the first years always raced to the clubroom after clean up was finished, and Hinata and Kageyama were never far behind. A few members of the Neighborhood team lingered, chatting and laughing amongst themselves while they waited for Tadashi to lock up. He'd been dragging his feet, waiting for them to go, but if he took much longer then people would start to notice. Tsukishima already had. He noticed everything.
Finally, Takinoue-san and Asahi-san waved their goodbyes, leaving only Coach Ukai and Shimada-san talking in low voices just beyond the open doorway. Their low voices carried in on the warm air; not the words, but the familiar timbre of their voices.
"You're being foolish," Tsukishima said in a low voice, startling him. He stepped up beside Tadashi and followed his line of sight to the two men. "Yamaguchi."
Clenching the broom more tightly, Tadashi swallowed. "I have to try, don't I?" he murmured.
Tsukishima's eyes narrowed. "You've been spending too much time around the idiots. Their stupidity is wearing off on you."
Tadashi forced a laugh. "Come on, Tsukki. I know you like Hinata deep down."
"Ugh." Tsukishima wrinkled his nose. "I'm going to pretend you didn't say that."
"Tsukki," Tadashi said, laughing softly.
Tsukishima gave him a stern look. "Don't do it, Tadashi," he whispered, before lifting a hand to push his glasses up his nose, and walking away to the door. The low voices lifted slightly in greeting, and Tadashi watched with wide eyes as Tsukishima made some excuse and led Coach Ukai aside. Shimada watched them walk away, standing with his hands in the pockets of his shorts. And then he turned, glancing through the net into the gym, and a crooked smile spread across his face.
Tadashi's stomach turned over. "Sh-Shimada-san!" he called out, hurrying over to the door. Too late, he realised that he was still holding the broom, and he quickly propped it against the wall beside the panel of light switches.
"Good match tonight, Tadashi," Shimada said, grinning as he reached out to pull the net aside. He reached in with his other hand and flicked off the lights in the gym. "Though you could ask Kageyama-kun to go easy on us old guys. We're no match for that quick anymore."
"Shimada-san," Tadashi said again. He glanced around, scanning the area. Everyone else was gone; he could hear them in the distance, arguing and laughing in the clubroom. Tsukishima and Coach Ukai were nowhere to be seen. Before he could second guess what he was doing, Tadashi seized Shimada's shirt and dragged him forward into the shadowy gym.
"Tadashi—!" Shimada yelped, stumbling up the steps. "What—?"
All the other sounds seemed to melt away as they stepped inside, as though they had stepped outside of time, existing momentarily on another plane of existence. Tadashi's heart was in his throat, but he knew that this was his only chance. He raised his trembling hands to Shimada's shoulders. "Shimada-san," he whispered, wincing at the squeak in his own voice. "I—I want to—to tell you that I like you."
Shimada's eyes widened. "What did you say?"
"I—I like you a lot, Shimada-san!" Tadashi hissed, searching his face desperately. He was several centimetres taller than Shimada now, not quite enough to tower over him, but enough that, standing this close, Shimada had to tip his head back slightly to hold his gaze. In the darkness, he could just make out the shape of Shimada's face, the outline of his expression lit by moonlight. His mouth was open, his face frozen.
Before he could lose his nerve, Tadashi leaned forward, just the way he'd practiced, and pressed his mouth to Shimada's.
It was only for a moment. He was only brave enough for a moment, but even before it was over, Shimada put his hands against Tadashi's chest and pushed him away.
"Yamaguchi," Shimada said softly. His face was wretched. "I'm sorry, no."
Tadashi's chest twisted horribly, and his face flushed with heat. "Yeah," he mumbled, backing away. "Sorry. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have—"
"Tadashi—"
"Sorry," Tadashi muttered again, backing away. He turned, stumbling through the net and out into the heavy summer air. Shimada's voice echoed after him, but Tadashi didn't turn back.
—
Eighteen
"Oi, Captain," yelled someone from the Neighbourhood team, and Tadashi turned, just in time to dodge a ball that Hinata had spiked in his direction.
"Sorry, Yamaguchi!" Hinata shouted.
"Idiot!" Kageyama yelled, swiping at him.
Tadashi just tuned them out, responding with a weak smile and a wave to let Hinata know that he was okay.
"Captain! Yamaguchi, oi!"
This time Tadashi recognised the voice as belonging to Tanaka, and he jogged over to join him.
"Hey, Tanaka-san," he said, greeting him with a tired smile, and nodding to Asahi-san and Takinoue-san. "What's up?"
"Yamaguchi-kun," Takinoue said, planting his hands on his hips. "You have any idea why Makoto keeps ditching us?"
"Yeah, he never misses regular practice," Tanaka put in.
"But every time we have a game scheduled with you guys, he mysteriously has to work."
"Or look after his mom's dog," Tanaka said.
Takinoue laughed. "Or get a haircut. How many haircuts does one guy need?"
"Guys," Asahi said, grimacing. "I'm sure he's got a good reason."
"Or something happened," Tanaka said, shrugging.
All three turned to Tadashi, and he wilted under their gaze. "Why—why would I know?" he asked defensively.
"It's just a question, Yamaguchi," Asahi said, smiling at him warmly.
"Well, I don't know," Tadashi said, taking a step back. "Sorry."

Twenty-three
Tadashi had just gotten home from work when his phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Yamaguchi-kun. It's Shimada. Shimada Makoto, from—"
"Shimada-san!" Tadashi's voice squeaked as he spoke, and his throat started to close, an old panic seizing him tightly. "W-why are you calling me?"
"I'm sorry to disturb you," Shimada said, sounding almost as uncomfortable as Tadashi felt. "Your dad gave me your number. My baby cousin is going to university soon, and she wants to be a teacher, so uh. He thought you might...have some advice?"
Tadashi blinked. His legs were weak, and he stumbled over to his bed and sat down heavily. "What?"
"My cousin," Shimada said again, his voice quiet and hesitant. "I'm sorry. This was a bad idea."
"No! Tadashi said quickly. "Of course I want to help. You just—took me by surprise, that's all." He ran his fingers through his hair, trying to catch his breath. His mind was spinning back through the past few years, trying to recall the last time he'd seen Shimada. It had been the last time they went to Nationals; he'd avoided Tadashi after that, just as he'd avoided him in the months leading up to the competition. Tadashi hadn't been alone in a room with him since that terrible summer night in the gym. "Why are you calling me?
"Because my c—"
"Your cousin, yeah," Tadashi said, grimacing. "You said. Why me?"
Shimada cleared his throat. "Yamaguchi, I—wanted to apologise."
"What? Why?"
"Back when you were in school," Shimada said, sighing. "I didn't really know what to do. I knew that you had a crush on me, but I thought you'd just grow out of it." He laughed softly. "I'm sure you did a long time ago."
Tadashi swallowed thickly. "Shimada-san—"
"I'm sorry for bringing it up, I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry for not handling it better. I worried that I pushed you away, or made you feel more alone, and I'm sorry if that was true."
Tadashi's eyes and throat burned. "Thank you," he mumbled.
Shimada laughed again, but not unkindly. "I should have told you that a long time ago."
"Yeah," Tadashi muttered. He cleared his throat and lay back on his bed. "Well...better late than never."
Shimada sighed with relief. "Right. Anyway, I—I just wanted to apologise, really."
"Okay."
"And…" Shimada trailed off, and Tadashi listened to the silence, the sound of him breathing, for several moments. Finally, Shimada spoke again. "I guess—I wanted to ask how you are, and if you're happy?"
Tadashi took a shuddering breath, and then was surprised by his own smile. "I'm...pretty good, actually," he said, cradling the phone close to his ear. "How are you?"

Twenty-four
"You're being foolish," Tsukishima said, glancing across at him. "Yamaguchi." Tsukishima's hands flexed on the steering wheel, and he gave Tadashi a small, brief smile before turning his attention back to the road. "It's going to be fine."
Tadashi nodded, unconvinced. "I just—I still feel stupid," he mumbled.
Tsukishima sighed, and pushed his glasses up his nose. "Third year was a long time ago. You should stop feeling embarrassed about it."
"That's easy for you to say!" Tadashi complained.
"Tadashi," Tsukishima groaned.
"I made an idiot of myself back then," Tadashi mumbled, sinking lower in his seat. "What if he sees me and he just—still thinks of me as a kid?"
Tsukishima glanced across again. "With the kind of messages you two have been exchanging, I highly doubt that."
Tadashi's ears flushed. "Tsukki!"
"You've been talking for weeks. I'm sure you would know by now if he felt that way."
"Yeah, I guess."
Aren't you planning to stay over anyway?"
Tadashi covered his face. "Maybe."
To his surprise, Tsukishima laughed softly. "I still don't know what you see in him, but you're worrying too much. He obviously likes you."
"Tsukki," Tadashi groaned, sinking down in his seat again.
"I'm helping," Tsukishima said lightly. "You take yourself too seriously." He sighed, shaking his head. "Trust me, as someone who takes himself way too seriously."
Tadashi grinned. "I never thought I'd hear you admit that."
Tsukishima looked pained. "You're in crisis. I'm trying to be supportive."
"I'm not in crisis," Tadashi protested.
"Your boyfriend is eleven years older than you."
Tadashi's face flushed. "He's not my boyfriend," he muttered. "He's just—we're not—that."
Wincing, Tadashi turned and stared out of the window for a minute or two, until the embarrassment had faded from his cheeks. Tsukishima was suspiciously quiet.
"You know," Tsukishima said at last.
When Tadashi looked over, Tsukishima's eyes were fixed on the road, his hands tight on the wheel. There was a faint blush across the bridge of his nose. Tadashi sat forward, his interest piqued. "What is it?"
Tsukishima grimaced. "I can't believe I'm going to tell you this."
"Tsukki!" Tadashi complained.
"Alright, alright," Tsukishima snapped. "When we were in third year—I kissed Hinata once."
Tadashi sighed and sank back in his seat. "Oh, that. I knew about that."
Tsukishima jerked the steering wheel. "What?"
"Easy, Tsukki!" Tadashi said, holding onto his seatbelt tightly. "Kageyama told me."
"Kageyama—" Tsukishima was incandescent. "I'm going to kill him. I'm going to kill both of them."
Tadashi started to laugh.

Twenty-six
"It's getting late," Tadashi murmured, pushing himself up on his elbows. He glanced around Shimada's room, at his own scattered clothes, and winced. "I should pack."
Shimada hummed, and slid an arm around his waist. "A little longer," he said, pulling Tadashi toward him.
Tadashi laughed, and sank back into the bed gratefully. Shimada was warm and soft, his jaw rough with stubble, his eyes hazy without his glasses. Sighing, Tadashi snuggled into him, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
"I don't wanna go," he murmured.
Shimada hummed in agreement, running his fingers lightly up and down Tadashi's back. "I don't want you to go either."
Tadashi huffed, pushing his face against Shimada's neck. "Maybe I'll just stay here," he mumbled. "Quit my job, stay here forever."
"Mm...sounds good," Shimada said, reaching up to run his fingers through Tadashi's hair. "But you'd get pretty bored around here."
"Don't care."
Shimada laughed. "Tadashi," he said, leaning back a short way. "You don't want to move back to Miyagi."
Tadashi grimaced. "No. But I want to be near you, I hate travelling back and forth, and only seeing you once or twice a month."
"Tadashi—"
"I know, I know," Tadashi sighed, flopping back down on his pillow. "It can't be helped."
"No, listen," Shimada said softly. He tapped Tadashi's shoulder until he sat up, and reached over to grab his glasses from the nightstand. "I didn't want to mention it until they'd made a firm decision," Shimada said, sitting up and facing him. "But...my parents have been talking about selling the shop."
Tadashi's eyes widened. "They—what?"
Shimada nodded. "They've been thinking about it for a while, but one of my uncles offered to buy them out. I could keep working there, but I thought—" He smiled, ducking his head sheepishly. "Maybe...if you wanted—"
"Yes," Tadashi said quickly.
Shimada laughed, his eyes warm. "You didn't even let me finish."
"Move in with me," Tadashi said, shuffling closer and grabbing hold of Shimada's hands. "My housemate is leaving soon, or—or we could get our own place."
"You really want to?" Shimada asked, his eyes crinkling with his crooked smile. "Are you sure?"
Tadashi nodded fervently, his own smile mirroring Shimada's. "I want this," he said, lifting Shimada's hand to his face and pressing it against his cheek. "I have for a long time."
Shimada's smile widened, and the tips of his ears turned pink. "Really, Tadashi?" he murmured, brushing the pad of his thumb along Tadashi's cheekbone. "You could have anybody. You really want some washed up retail clerk with muffin tops?"
Tadashi snorted. "I like your muffin tops." He leaned into Shimada's hand, then turned his head and kissed his palm. "And you're not washed up."
"You've always been an optimist," Shimada teased, leaning in to kiss him. "You should pack. You'll miss the train."
"Later," Tadashi said, crawling forward to straddle Shimada's thighs. "I'll catch the next one." He caught Shimada's face between his hands and kissed him again more firmly. "I don't want to leave just yet."
Shimada pulled him closer, holding his hips. "Fine by me."
