It was still early yet, not even really time to think about heading towards the staging area to get his cap and gown. In truth, Kuramochi didn’t even know why he was there, let alone so early. He didn’t particularly care about his graduation ceremony, and it wasn’t like his mom or grandpa could be there – the latter being down ill and the former having to care for him. It all seemed kind of pointless – there were a dozen other ways he would have rather celebrate the turning point in his life.
But, in the end, he couldn’t really say no, not when his partner was determined to see him cross the stage. He rather thought it was because the man would never have a graduation of his own and so was living vicariously through him.
“Do you want to head in now?”
Kuramochi blinked out of his thoughts and turned to the man beside him. They were almost at the front doors of the university’s auditorium, the place where they should say goodbye for the meantime, but Kuramochi couldn’t seem to do it. There was something in his partner’s eyes that sat ill within him, and he knew he’d never be able to sit still until he figured out what it was. “No, I don’t have to be in there till nine-thirty,” he replied, reaching out and catching Miyuki’s free hand and pulling him towards an overhang across the courtyard. “I want to talk to you first.”
Miyuki followed without complaint, pulled along by the shorter man. When they reached the overhand, he freed his hand and closed the umbrella they’d been sharing. “What do you want to say that can’t be said later?” He asked on a half sigh, turning his eyes towards the dark gray sky.
Kuramochi doubted it was an accident that his partner wouldn’t look at him. Kazuya was, for better or for worse, and avoider, when it came to matters close to his heart. It was, in part, why they were a good pair. He lived all his emotions out loud, while Miyuki lived his inwardly.
It was frustrating as hell sometimes though.
“You’ve been weird for nearly a week,” Kuramochi said, tilting his head and staring at the taller man. “I thought maybe you’d work it out on your own, but you’ve gotten worse the closer to today we got. So, out with it.”
Miyuki’s eyes fell to the wet paving stones beneath their feet, only adding further suspicion to Kuramochi’s mind. “There’s nothing to ‘out’. You’re imagining things. Everything’s fine.”
“I hate when you do that,” Kuramochi snapped, shifting forward into Miyuki’s space and sliding his arms around his waist so he could turn him towards him. “Shut me out like that, like we’re still sixteen and only teammates. Look at me, Kazuya.”
Kuramochi could feel his partner, and best friend, hold his breath as he forced himself to do as commanded. There was fear in Miyuki’s amber eyes and it immediately had every alarm bell he had ringing in his ears. “Kaz…”
Miyuki took a deep breath and closed his eyes, slumping just a little. “It ends today, doesn’t it? Today you graduate and move on into the real world to get a job…”
All at once Kuramochi realized what his problem was. He could even almost hear the words the other man didn’t say. “…and I’ll keep playing baseball. …Away from Tokyo.”
“Is this about Hiroshima?” Kuramochi demanded, a flutter of fear dancing through him as well. It was absurd – though they hadn’t talked about it, he thought it was pretty clear what was going to happen.
Miyuki frowned, hands running up Kuramochi’s shoulders to sit lightly against his neck and brush through the stiff hair at his nape. “I’m getting traded,” he said bluntly. “You know what that means.”
Kuramochi might have thought Miyuki was breaking up with him, except for the desperation in his touch. His thumb caressed his throat and his fingers tug into his nape just enough to belie his true feelings on the matter. Idiot, my boyfriend is an idiot. Exasperation made anger rise. Like it was so easy just to let five years of his life go, just like that.
The hell that was happening.
“What the hell makes you think I’m going to let you go to Hiroshima alone?” Kuramochi growled, eyes narrowing. “Or for that matter, lets you give up without even talking to me about it? I should punch you, you bastard.”
To his credit, Miyuki didn’t look confused, only surprised, though in Kuramochi’s mind, that wasn’t much better. “I… didn’t want you to give up your life here. Your friends, or your family. Hiroshima is a lot farther to Chiba than Tokyo is, you know.”
“So what, I’m just supposed to let the man I love just walk away because I might be a few hours farther from my family?” He couldn’t believe they actually had to have this conversation. But maybe that was his fault too. He’d assumed that his partner would know that he was obviously going with him. “Kaz, I can get a job anywhere, and I can always take a train to see mom and grandpa. I’d rather have you in Hiroshima than be alone in Tokyo.”
Miyuki stared at him for a long time and Kuramochi met his gaze fearlessly. He willed him, silently, to see that he was being an idiot about this, making all the wrong assumptions based on his inherent fear of being left behind.
When the silence stretched, and the taller man seemed to be weakening, Kuramochi sighed, stretching up just a little to kiss him softly. “Kazuya, I love you. Stop being an idiot and let me.”

the diamond feels strange underfoot.
he's wearing dress shoes instead of cleats, so that's only to be expected.
it doesn't help that it's raining, either—the clay is lumpy, sticking together in clumps as he makes his way to home plate.
miyuki is standing there, looking out at the field.
"hey," kuramochi murmurs. "you in there?"
the shift in miyuki's face when he's pulled from his thoughts is a subtle thing, but kuramochi has been watching him long enough to recognize it: a slow blink, then another. as if he's manually refocusing the way one would a camera lens—bringing the world back into focus.
he does it now, turning his head to look at kuramochi. his hair is starting to stick to his forehead, damp with the rain.
even though he makes eye contact, kuramochi can tell he's still not all there. he's been like this the past few days—spacey, getting lost in his thoughts.
it's not wholly a surprise; it's miyuki, after all. thinking overmuch was a calling card of his.
kuramochi was smart enough to know most of it—the distraction—has to do with the day at hand.
he adjusts his diploma case in his hand (he hadn't thought he'd be outside this long, when he went looking for miyuki) and takes a few more steps forward, until they're close enough that he knows miyuki can hear him.
"you're gonna miss lineup if you stay out here much longer," kuramochi says.
"i was gonna come in soon," miyuki answers.
quiet falls again; the only sound is the rain pattering on the dugout, on the sidewalk past the field.
it's not a serious rain—just a drizzle. small drops, consistent but not too wet. enough to blur edges, to limit visibility.
miyuki's glasses are starting to fog up, and kuramochi resists the urge to reach up and wipe them clear. he clenches his hands into fists for a moment while it passes.
he doesn't know where to go from here; miyuki doesn't seem rushed either, evidently content to let the silence between them stretch on. he knows that he should say something about where miyuki's head is at: something reassuring, something about how everything is going to be fine, because miyuki has a spot on one of the best university teams in tokyo, and how could that not end up fine?
kuramochi tries not to remember the look on miyuki's face when he'd told him that he was going to osaka.
"we should go," he says, and he starts to move away.
before he can get too far, though, a hand reaches out and takes his.
"wait," miyuki says. "just. just stay here with me a minute longer."
kuramochi looks at him a moment before—"sorry, i just—"
he reaches up to pull away miyuki's glasses. "so you can see past the rain."
they stand there a few moments longer, kuramochi holding miyuki's glasses loose in his hand all the while.
finally, miyuki inhales. "let's go."
kuramochi wipes his glasses and hands them back before leading them back towards the school.
