Bonus Round 1: Time and Place

Bonus Round 1: Time & Place

Who, when, and where? Send your favorite sports animanga characters to any time and place you want—but the filler decides what they do there.

This bonus round will close on June 29th, 2018 at 11:59PM PT. (Countdown Timer)

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open to new Fills.

Rules

Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a time and place, along with any character/ship/group/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms. Your prompt can include characters from any animanga title regardless of your team affiliation.

  • Please format your prompt like so:
    TIME: [Time]
    PLACE: [Place]
  • The place can be any real or fictional location.
  • The time can be as specific or vague as you want.
  • Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt “Fandom: Any”.
  • If your prompt includes a relationship, make sure to use the proper notation. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Feel free to add additional clarifications as needed.

Here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing:

TIME: Victorian Era

PLACE: The catacombs of London

TIME: Monday morning

PLACE: The coffee shop down the street

TIME: The last pitch

PLACE: Koshien

TIME: June 16th, 2018 at 4:20 PM

Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your time and place-inspired fanwork.

Please make sure to adhere to the specific prompt/fill formats!!! Otherwise, the BR scorer may miss your fill. If you make a mistake, please edit your post, or delete and repost if editing has been disabled.

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the After-Hours comm. To join, click here.

After joining, you will be able to access the AfterHours BR1 post.

“Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the After-Hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

  • Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills MUST be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. To join, click here.

After joining, you will be able to access the AfterHours BR1 post.

If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please DO NOT use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each
  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each
  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each
  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact a mod.

Sequel to this

I wrote this before the first part, hope you like ! (I would like to apologize to Onaga)

***

Haruki pokes the fire, making sure it stays alight as the rain outside tries to make it’s way into their refuge for the night. They’d done pretty well for themselves today; even though it leaks in a couple of places, the farmhouse they’re currently staying in is well stocked and has a fireplace which they’d immediately put to use, glad to be able to dry off and finally have a warm meal. They’d even managed to shower, the water system miraculously still functional. He sighs and leans back against the couch he’s sat against, turning his head so that he can look over at his companion.

The blond is asleep, blue eyes hidden behind golden lashes and face bathed in the soft firelight, his features completely relaxed for the first time in what feels like forever. Haruki can’t help himself as he brings a hand up to stroke the scratch on the side of his face, tracing it back to his cheek and letting his hand settle there, unable to find it in himself to feel guilty when the other stirs. Not when he’s looking at him like that, sleepy and malleable, lips pulled upwards in a gentle smile, making him look young and innocent.

Not for the first time, Haruki finds himself reveling in how strong a person Konoha Akinori is as he seems to always find it in himself to smile, even as the world crashes and burns all around them both, encouraging Haruki to keep going and not give up, if only to protect that smile, as fragile as it may be sometimes. He feels infinitely grateful that the other had survived long enough for Haruki to meet him and get to travel alongside him. He remembers the cold feeling of dread as he’d woken up, vines obscuring part of his view, only to find that every one of the survival pods other than his had ceased working. He’s brought back from the traumatizing memory of finding what was left of his friends and family by a warm hand against the back of his own, still on Konoha’s cheek.

He focuses his attention back on his friend and smiles at him lazily, Konoha’s hand leaving it’s place on the back of Haruki’s to find gentle purchase against his cheek instead,

Thunder finally breaks through the pitter patter of rain outside, breaking the quiet as the house trembles around them slightly,

“Hey,” Konoha’s voice is raspy from sleep, Haruki retrieves his hand as blue orbs disappear once more, the blond closing his eyes again, retracting his own hand so that he can stretch leisurely, “How long was I out?” he murmurs,

Haruki checks his watch, still forever grateful that it doesn’t require a battery as it’s the only thing that helps them keep track of time in moments like these, where day bleeds into night and then back into day.

“About four hours,” He answers, feeling pleased. Even more so when Konoha’s smile widens a little, though his expression remains dazed,

“I can’t remember the last time I slept that much… I’m all groggy now,” There’s a bright flash of white light outside, temporarily making it’s way through the gaps in the barricades they’ve set up against the windows as lightning strikes somewhere in the distance, the sound of rain becoming heavier and more aggressive as the weather worsens. Haruki chuckles and leans forward, placing a gentle kiss to Konoha’s temple,

“You’re all soft,” he corrects in a whisper, earning himself a breath of amused laughter from the blond. Haruki pulls away as his friend starts to rise, sitting up before sliding down onto the floor next to him, he smiles bemusedly at him, “You know, I could have joined you up there instead, you didn’t have to come all the way down here with me,” Konoha ignores him in favor of cuddling up to his side as close as possible, the height difference small enough now that he can comfortably let his forehead fall to rest in Haruki’s fluffy brown hair. The brunet indulges him and wraps an arm around him, grip loose and gentle as he holds him close.

He’s always found it a little ironic that just because Konoha is almost a head taller than him, people always automatically assume the blond is the threat. Though it had saved them on one occasion where a group of scared humans had been too focused on trying to neutralize his friend when it’s actually Haruki who has the muscle mass and -coincidentally- the twelve years of experience in boxing. He may or may not have ‘accidentally’ broken the arm of the last person who had roughed his companion up.

Twice.

Thunder roars once more as it shakes the house, the rain is falling heavily enough now that water droplets are periodically making their way down the chimney and into the fire-pit, emitting little sizzling noises as they turn to vapor. There’s a growing puddle by the doorway and he’s already prepared to find a miniature lake in the kitchen when they decide to move later.

Haruki nuzzles into Konoha’s neck, the smell of his recently cleaned skin contrasting strongly with that of rainwater and sweat drenched clothes. It’s not like he cares much, it’s not like either of them had been allowed the luxury of being picky ever since they woke up. Besides, anything is better than the smell of blood.

“You should sleep,” The blond whispers into his ear, “You didn’t sleep at all while I was out, did you?” Of course he didn’t. Why would he risk sleeping while Konoha was out himself? Just because they weren’t outside didn’t mean they were safe from harm. He already slept fitfully when his friend was the one staying awake, the memory of being jolted awake by Konoha’s distressed cries as Daydreams tried to snatch him away still much too vivid in his mind.

No, he’ll sleep when they finally reach Alimoor. Only then does he think he’ll be able to relax enough to get in more than 30 minute power naps. It had been hard enough when they’d lost Onaga, whom Haruki had only known for the short week they’d spent together, hardly getting to know each other due to the man’s taciturn nature. But loosing Konoha? After all these months spent together, sharing everything; be it from their pasts down to body heat when they’d last got caught in the rain? He’d be as good as dead himself. The thought makes him tighten the grip he has on the blond’s shoulders, his other arm coming up to grip him around the back, turning so he can cradle him in his arms. He brusquely nuzzles further into Konoha’s neck as the other makes an adorable sound of surprise in the back of his throat, his own arms coming to wrap around the brunet,

“Komi…?” Is whispered uncertainly against his temple. Haruki clutches Konoha tighter and squeezes his eyes shut as his throat closes up. He chokes on his words and lets slip a broken,

“I love you,”

Thunder crashes again, louder now. Closer.

Konoha tenses up in his arms and Haruki can’t quite blame him. They’d never mentioned anything about love, let alone feelings. Hell, they hadn’t even talked about this overly tactile…thing they’d had going on for so long Haruki can’t actually remember a time it hadn’t been a part of their interactions . He prepares himself for gentle rejection, feeling a little silly for letting his emotions run away with him when he’s usually so put together, but then Konoha’s grip tightens around him and the mouth resting close to Haruki’s ear opens, letting a wavering voice wash over him in the gentlest of whispers,

“I love you too,”

Lightning scatters points of light throughout the room and he feels like he’s been punched in the gut as his breath leaves him all at once. His head is spinning as he jerks away from Konoha, almost frantic in his need to see his face. The blond pulls away, expression concerned, and Haruki barely has the time to see his pretty blue eyes before he closes his own and kisses him.

Thunder booms, the house trembles, lightning strikes, the rain roars.

It’s clumsy and he accidentally bumps his nose against the other’s in his rush, but he can’t bring himself to care about the sting right now, and it appears that the blond can’t either as he simply tilts his head enough to adjust the angle, letting their lips mold together more comfortably as he presses back into Haruki, almost desperate.

The thunderstorm outside rages on, the cold humidity of it kept at bay by the fire that crackles and hisses, basking them in it’s warm orange glow as the kiss slows but doesn’t stop.

Alimoor is days away, but Haruki would walk until the end of time itself if it meant staying with the man in his arms.

I initially wanted to go the gauzy ethereal route but uh, it Went The Way It Did. Hope u enjoy? :")

***

Theirs was a partnership borne out of initial misgivings and a well timed ploy.

Tooru had first encountered Ushijima at an antiques auction his client's target was attending, and as he stared at this hulk of a man who looked like he could blend right in with the haughty and the highbrow lounged about the appointed warehouse, Tooru felt the beginnings of a long buried grief swirl within, unleashed.

Ushijima's reputation in the dreamsharing trade was rife, after all, with constant successes; Shiratorizawa never failed in any of the missions its leader deigned to accept, no matter how impossible the odds were stacked against them.

This, with the surety of a death knell, meant that the majority of demand in the market were funneled towards Ushijima's interests first, before the remaining requests trickled through like scraps for the rest of them to pick up.

Tooru absolutely hated it. Competition was scathing enough as it was, and miring it with the condescension he faced every day from potential clients towards the abilities of his team in comparison to Shiratorizawa was nothing short of blatant disrespect.

Seijou could have been the most motley of all crews, but it was his, clawed from the ground up.

And he had the greatest pleasure of blazing through every glass ceiling placed before them.

Tooru was brought back to the present upon the bang of a gavel. Multiple voices rose in unison, deafening, all stating their intended prices for a half-crumbled vase set before them, claimed to be crafted during the Qing Dynasty.

He snorted. Anyone with two learned eyes could discern that the piece of pottery was fake: it did not bear the carvings of its master's signature.

Still, there was fun to be had from watching the filthily rich make fools of themselves, so he kept quiet and focused on his target, an elderly Diet member sipping sake in a corner, deep in conversation with a fellow enthusiast.

Every so often, glimpses of Ushijima's iron-set face would filter into sight.

Tooru gritted his teeth.

Another round by the gavel, then, he got up to leave.

He tapped once on the hidden mic under his sleeve.

It was time to make a move.

***

As it turned out, Ushijima wasn't there to poach his target from right under his nose.

In fact, if Tooru could have two moments of peace from fending off the projections swamping him and the other man, he'd be able to piece together a ruse, concocted by both Seijou and Shiratorizawa's supposed "clients", to simultaneously erase the two groups out of the business. How, admittably, deliciously insiduos.

Yet Tooru was having none of it. He whirled around, swiftly kicking a faceless bodyguard in the groin before slamming his back against Ushijima's, mutually providing cover. There was blood across his split knuckles and he knew that the pain was a mere figment of this dream, but it stung nonetheless. If they didn't find a way to regroup with their respective teams soon, there would be no hope of surviving.

Tooru snarled. "Is your reputation just for show or are you actually going to make yourself useful?!"

Despite grappling with a salaryman, whose errant tie kept flapping into Ushijima's face, Ushijima still had the gall to placidly raise an eyebrow. His tone was even when he replied, "Requests for assistance should be directed politely."

Tooru damn near choked at that. Finally at the last vestiges of his patience, he snapped his eyes shut, and dreamed.

The pavement below them splintered, caving open, engulfing every single car and person unlucky enough to be at its epicentre, and they, too, fell.

But he was not done yet; they abruptly landed upon a large expanse of coarse, scaly skin, and as it rose, they were lifted dizzyingly higher towards the poisonously blue sky.

Ushijima's eyes were wide, for once, when the breadth of what Tooru had conjured dawned on him, and he muttered wondrously under his breath, "Godzilla."

Yes, he'd resorted to creating the nationally beloved dinosaur out of desperation to escape their previous predicament and it was doing a marvellous job at squashing everything within sight. If Ushijima had a problem with this arrangement, he could very well go jump off and fly a kite.

"Any complaints?" He aired, tone dry.

"The dream's stability--"

"Can go fuck itself!" As if on cue, the creature stomped mightily, perhaps in tune with his vindication. "We're getting out of here anyway, there's no point covering our tracks since this was all a setup."

The other man nodded. Then, almost hesitantly: "Dinosaurs, you like them?"

Tooru nearly busted into incredulous laughter. Of all the things he'd expected Ushijima to inquire about, it definitely wasn't that. "Nah, Iwa-chan-- my vice captain, I mean, is the one crazy about it."

"I see."

"Yep. Anyway, it's your cue to go." Deeming there to be enough height for a kick to happen, he hauled Ushijima by the collar and promptly, shoved him off their perch. He noted the look of shock upon Ushijima's face with a great amount of satisfaction.

Then, he quickly followed suit for there was work to be done in the real world.

***

Once their teams had extricated themselves from the target's mansion and subsequently reconvened in Seijou's nearest safehouse, there was much talk to be held over future deliberations and possible vengeance.

Though that all grinded to a halt as Ushijima took one long smouldering look at Tooru and said: "You should have come to Shiratorizawa."

Tooru blinked.

And immediately kicked every Shiratorizawa member out; right before slamming the door in Ushijima and co's faces, he hissed, "Go fuck yourself."

"Your ears are red," Iwaizumi helpfully pointed out as he stormed back. Behind him Matsukawa and Hanamaki shared badly hidden snickers.

"You're all cancelled," Tooru grumbled tiredly and flopped onto a couch, ready to pass out.

(Tooru's never had a natural dream in ages but that night his mind wheeled images of large hands and flint-sharp gazes, and the front of his pants strained against his crotch when his eyes flew open.

He cursed.)

Kageyama held his breath as he stepped into the gym at Aobajousai High School for the first time, and he didn’t miss the way everything fell silent the moment he was noticed. The first years carrying net posts stopped in their tracks, the second years wheeling out ball carts, follow suit, and the third years stretching off on the sidelines look up in curiosity.

The quiet was broken by Iwaizumi coming up to him and clapping him on the shoulder. “Hey, Kageyama. It’s great to see you again.”

“Thank you, Iwaizumi-senpai,” Kageyama mumbled, his eyes glued to the other side of the gym where two achingly familiar faces coaxed the net pole into place while looking at nothing else but him.

Kageyama looked away.

The gesture did not go unnoticed. Iwaizumi sighed. “You need to talk to them sometime. Give them a chance to give you a chance.”

Iwaizumi’s earnest expression fortified Kageyama’s willpower to strike up a conversation with the teammates who had borne the worst of his terrible demeanor back in middle school. It had only been a few months since then, but the event had sparked a metamorphosis of self-awareness.

Taking a deep breath, Kageyama stepped forward, his stride growing in confidence as the people around him resumed their usual business. That was, of course, except for Kindaichi and Kunimi.

Kindaichi’s attention thoroughly fixed on the pole, he mumbled, “You’re never late for practice.”

“Yeah.” Kageyama didn’t say anything else, unsure how to impart that he almost didn’t come at all because he didn’t know if anyone would want him there. Instead, he opted to string the bottom of the net while Kindaichi used his superior height to secure the top.

Practice churned by like any other, with the sole oddity being the coaches. They carefully watched their new crop of first years and the three of them in particular. Kageyama supposed they knew what had happened at Kitagawa Daiichi in that horrible final match. How he had been invited to Aobajousai despite that was a mystery to him.

Well, if one also considered it odd that Kindaichi and Kunimi didn’t hesitate to hit his tosses during spiking practice and were happy with the sets they received, then perhaps it wasn’t a normal practice at all.

At the final whistle, everyone hustled to the locker rooms except for the first years, who lingered to shag stray balls and tear down the nets. About half of them were on the same team at Kitaichi, and more than a few furtive glances were thrown Kageyama’s way. He wasn’t all that surprised; he had expected at least that much.

Kindaichi and Kunimi end up at the same train station, something Kageyama had not thought of but made sense. They all lived within a kilometer radius of each other. Kindaichi used to take the bus because it dropped him off closer to his house, but with them farther from their usual neighborhood than in middle school, the train was the most efficient option.

Unwilling to exacerbate a situation they would all have to live with for three years, Kageyama found a spot along the fence and lingered there waiting for the 6:40 to arrive. He nearly jumped when Kindaichi and Kunimi followed suit and stood next to him.

Kunimi smiled wryly at Kageyama’s panicked expression. “Relax. No one’s here to bite your head off.” Kindaichi nodded in agreement. “It happened, and now it’s over. I’m over it, Kindaichi’s mostly over it, and I don’t think anybody’s interested in dragging this out for three years.”

Blinking in surprise, Kageyama gawked at Kindaichi, who was at ease around him for the first time in a year. If anyone deserved to hate him, it was Kindaichi, yet he stood right next to Kageyama on purpose, idly scrolling through his phone like they sat next to each other every day. Like they used to.

Kageyama swallowed hard, an emotion he couldn’t describe knotting in his throat at the normalcy of the scene. Kunimi talked about having homework on the first day of school, Kindaichi sympathized, and Kunimi even asked him if he’d gotten any and sighed in lament when Kageyama shook his head in the negative.

They boarded the train, opting for the back of the car and the long, open bench there. Their bags stowed under the seat, they sat shoulder to shoulder as the train lurched into motion.

Five minutes into the ride, Kindaichi growled under his breath and grumbled, “This is ridiculous.” He turned to Kageyama with a grumpy frown. “Will you stop acting like you’re standing next to dynamite or something? Nobody’s going to blow up at you.”

“But I —” The rest of the words didn’t come out, but they rattled around in Kageyama’s head: I deserve it.

He reeled when Kunimi reached across Kindaichi to flick him in the forehead. “Stupid Kageyama. Nobody’s mad at you anymore. We said what we needed to say in that game. You received the message and adjusted accordingly.

“Why would we keep torturing each other for the next three years when we could, you know, not do that. Grudges are boring. It’s a lot easier being friends like we were in the first place.” With that, Kunimi dug an issue of a popular shounen manga publication out of his bag and held it up. “I finished it. Anybody want it next?”

Kindaichi eyed the magazine with interest but turned to Kageyama instead. “What about you? Do you still read One Punch Man?”

Kageyama’s eyes widened at the comment. Kindaichi remembered his favorite manga and even wanted to give him first dibs on the latest chapter. He let out a shivering breath and nodded, hesitantly reaching out to take the book from Kunimi’s extended hand.

His fingers traced the cover, trembling as he absorbed what this magazine truly meant. Not just manga or politeness, but a new beginning. They could go back in time when they did everything together as first years in middle school, but with enough maturity and growth to keep from making those same mistakes again.

Eyes watery as he looked up at them both, Kageyama’s lips slowly spread into a soft smile. “Thank you.”

He saw Kindaichi’s face flash a myriad of emotions, but relief won out and he put his hand on Kageyama’s knee and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Yeah.” Kunimi gave him a lazy salute and sat back to start on his geometry homework, giving Kageyama time to absorb it all.

At the last stop before they all went their separate ways, Kindaichi said, “Hey, wait for us tomorrow morning. We’ll be here at six thirty.”

“I will.” Kageyama headed home with a dopey grin on his face because he finally had a chance to make things right, to be the friend they had deserved and to receive the same treatment in kind. There was probably a lot of stuff to talk about, but they had three years, and this Kageyama Tobio could wait for good things when they meant this much.

“He ought to be here by now,” Chris says, half-full champagne flute perched between his fingers. “If he’s really coming.” It’s dark now, and the party, lit by hundreds of electric lanterns, has swelled and spilled like champagne from the foyer into the gardens below. The throngs of silk, each more beautiful and faceless than the next, flit between tables like butterflies.

“He’ll be here,” Victor scans his blue gardens below for a familiar face. They’re on the landing partway up the stairs, redone only last year with porcelain tiles imported from Italy. The tiles are patterned blue and white, and he knows Yuuri will love them if – when – he appears.

“Look, Victor – old sport,” Chris sighs. “This is, what, your fourth party –”

“Fifth.”

“Okay, fifth. Fifth party, fifth time hoping that this boy will just…appear? Then what happens?”

Victor pointedly avoids Chris’s gaze, instead scanning the guests and taking measured sips of champagne. And then, in the corner of his vision, laughing with another party guest… Before he really registers what happens, the flute slips out of his fingers and shatters on the floor in a mess of shards that glitter like the first ice of winter.

It’s him. At the bottom of the steps, in the yellow ochre glow from a lantern, Yuuri in a deep blue suit – blue like his silk shirts upstairs, Victor thinks. The shirts – he should show Yuuri, how pleased he would be!

Next to him, Chris is saying something, turning to someone in a black suit, a server, a guest, someone to clean the shattered champagne flute from the tiled floor. But Yuuri is so close he could touch, and before he can realize what’s happening, Yuuri is standing on the step below him, looking up at him through dark lashes and everything feels right.

“I’d hoped – ” Victor begins.

“It’s lovely to see you,” Yuuri smiles, and his heart pitches at the softness of his syllables.

“We have so much – so much to talk about,” he breathes. “The gates, did you see the gates when you arrived? They’re direct imitations of the Hotel de Ville in Normandy. We talked of France so often, I – I always thought of you.”

Yuuri smiles. “This was always your dream, wasn’t it? I’m glad you’ve got everything now.”

“So much has happened. I want to tell you all of it,” Victor says. “We should – by the champagne. No, I know, the gazebo.”

He motions for Yuuri to follow him, glancing around before taking him through a side door and around the outside of the gardens, where the gazebo, whitewashed again just last week, sits in front of the dock. The city lights across the bay sparkle and everything is silent, save for the quiet rush of water lapping against the shore in front of them. The green electric light fixed to the end of the dock across the bay shines steadily. Yuuri tears his gaze away from the water and steps into the gazebo.

In an instance, it’s almost as if the five years have shrunk to a single moment, as if nothing has changed. In the dim light, in the near-fairy-tale of the gazebo, Yuuri looks the same as he did that last night before Victor had to leave, and if he ignores everything but Yuuri, he can pretend that he’s the same too. Space and time are supple in Yuuri’s hands and as Yuuri leans on the railing, Victor wonders how he seems to hold the universe together.

“You left,” Yuuri whispers suddenly, breaking the fantasy. Victor hates it, how his heart drops at the smallness of Yuuri’s voice. “You left without saying goodbye.”

“Yuuri, I – ”

“All those years ago,” he says. “I’d dared to hope that someday – ”

“I wanted to come back,” Victor says. “I just, the war and we lost touch – ”

“Nobody can wait forever,” Yuuri replies.

“I’ll stay this time,” Victor says. “So much has changed in five years. I want so much to show you. Have you seen the grounds? No matter, I’ll show you the whole of them. And beautiful shirts, cotton from India and silk from China – they’re so soft that you’d cry.” Yuuri doesn’t respond, simply looks out beyond Victor’s dock. They stand in silence, watching light ripple across the lake.

Finally, Yuuri pulls back a little, grasps the rail behind him carelessly, and looks over at him. “Victor.”

“We could try again, couldn’t we?” Victor says. “It’s not too – ”

“Victor, I’m married.”

“You’re – ”

“He’s a very nice man, well-off,” Yuuri says. “We’re quite comfortable, and he has a beautiful house in East Egg. I came as a friend, but I see now that I perhaps I shouldn’t have. The past should remain.” He straightens and smiles, watery, or maybe it’s the green-lit water across the bay reflected in his eyes. “We were good, though, weren’t we? At least then,” Yuuri smiles and steps back. Behind him, in the gardens, there’s a great swell of noise as the jazz band begins and the guests flock to the dance floor. “And you’ve done well, I’m glad to see. You don’t really need me. The glittering parties, all of new society at your doorstep – you must be pleased.”

“Pleased,” Victor repeats, though his voice sounds oddly hollow. It echoes in his ears before he realizes that Yuuri’s pulled away from the railing and back toward the party. “Please,” he whispers, “you could stay.”

“It’s been five years, Victor,” Yuuri says. He steps out of the gazebo with one more look at Victor, like he’s drinking him in, and the green light across the bay flickers. “It’s time.”

In the blue gardens, the guests come and go, and the champagne flows like stars, and Yuuri Katsuki slips back into the crowd.
