Six months.
Six months since running and placing tenth in the Hakone Ekiden. Six months of rebuilding, moving forward, saying goodbye.
Haiji doesn’t have much time to think about it, Kakeru assumes. He’s made no effort to move out even since graduating, only acknowledging Yuki and King’s departures when he mulls over how many vegetables he should cut up for dinner or buy from the supermarket.
It’s odd, still having him around when Kakeru had been preparing himself for endless nights without him. He’d thought of their abysmal chances of getting three more people to move in without Haiji’s… for lack of a better word, charm, the amount of money they’d all have to spend on takeout, the empty space next to Prince during practice that the rest of them would acknowledge but never say anything about. Never verbally.
But he’s still here now, and Kakeru’s grateful. There’s more than one reason, really. With so many Kansei University students approaching them with boundless bursts of energy, there’s only so many residents left who can handle it. Logistically, it works completely in Kakeru-- in the team’s favor. Running practices without him would be a nightmare, as is there are enough freshmen with immature antics to worry about.
Then, there’s the practical parts. After finding out half of the Aotake residents didn’t even know how to do laundry, let alone cook, or clean their own rooms-- maybe Haiji had made it his own personal mission to stay behind until they became more stable.
The reasons he’s stayed behind aren’t all practical, though, and Kakeru mulls over the thought one summer day while attempting to learn how to cook one of the apartment’s favorite dishes. It’s part of Haiji’s dream, Kakeru knows. Running at Hakone was only part of it: surrounding himself with running and finding a purpose in his passion. But there’s something else, something more in Haiji’s eyes, something that for as long as Kakeru’s known him has always been there. He looks at Kakeru, and there’s a pure, unadulterated belief in him that overwhelms Kakeru to his core.
Haiji lit a fire underneath Kakeru, Kakeru found solace in its warmth.
It was enough to fuel him, make him stronger. Enough to, at the edges of his despair, help Kakeru find the hope in having a future in running again.
Kakeru hopes he’ll stay a long time.
