Bonus Round 3: AU/UA

It is time to be transported in another world ! Is the destination a medieval fantasy ? A lost city in the stars ? Or is everyone looking oddly normal ? Let your imagination wander in the realms of alternate universes and universe alterations!

This bonus round will be open until Friday, August 2nd at 11:59 PT. (Countdown)

This round is now closed!

However, it is perpetually open to new fills!

Rules

  • Submit prompts by commenting any AU or UA idea of your choice.
AU stands for Alternate Universe. This is a broad trope that involves everything from placing the characters in wildly different settings to slightly adjusting key points.
UA stands for Universe Alteration, a subtype of AU. Its meaning is similar to canon divergence i.e settings that are mostly like canon expect a few points are changed.
You may suggest what role the characters have in said universe or let it to the filler's imagination.

    Example:
    • Harry Potter AU
    • Royalty AU where they're part of ennemy kingdoms
    • AU where Karasuno lost against Shiratorizawa
  • Prompts can be in any language as long as you provide an English translation!
  • Fill prompts by creating fanworks inspired by the setting.
  • You cannot fill your teammate's prompts or your own!
  • You must use the prompt/fill headers below, and you cannot leave any line blank nor delete lines!

Format

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
    • Traditional art is also allowed with a good quality photo/scan
  • 14 lines (poetry)
  • Playlists - 5 song minimum with artists. Link to either a video playlist, or each song separately. Be sure to warn for content in the music videos, and you may find linking to lyrics helpful. You may also write an explanation of why you chose each song.
  • Moodboards - 9 photo min, source all photos, and no fanart allowed (unless it's your own)
  • If you’d like to use a different medium, please contact the mods if you have any questions about minimum requirements.
There is no max work cap.

“Crap, I’m late! It was nice meeting you!” Hinata looked at the time on his phone before shoving it into his pocket, bowing quickly and lifting his bag over his shoulder. He was on a trip with the rest of the team and they were flying back home today. The problem was, Hinata had gotten himself lost. They had a meeting deadline at the train station, which wasn’t too far away, but as the young boy had gotten himself lost, he ended up chatting to a local who helped point him in the right direction back.

As he ran, his phone vibrated in his pocket, but he ignored it. There was no way he’d make it on time if he stopped to pick it up. He made it to the station and flew down the stairs at a high space, dodging the other passengers. As he reached the platform with a heavy breath, he noticed the train moving out of the station, and saw his teammates inside, looking at him with a concerned look on their faces as they passed.

A figure appeared next to Hinata who also seemed out of breath, with his hands on his knees to keep him standing, and seemed to have missed the train too. Hinata caught a glimpse of the red tracksuit and stood up.
“Kenma?!” He recognised the familiar two-coloured hair of the setter he’d met at a training camp. “Were you supposed to take that train home too?”
Kenma nodded, “I was busy playing video games.”
“That’s cool!” Hinata exclaimed enthusiastically, looking around the station, “But what do we do now? That was the last train.”
Before Kenma had the chance to answer, his phone rang, and he took it out of his pocket to answer.
“Hello? Yes… I’m fine… Shoyo is here too… he’s fine too… I know… bye.”
Hinata could only make out half of the conversation Kenma was having on the phone. The blond-haired boy looked up after ending the call.
“That was Kuroo,” Kenma explained, “He says we’ve to find a hotel nearby and take the first train in the morning.”
Hinata nodded furiously, “Where is there a hotel?”
“I don’t know,” Kenma replied, looking at his phone, “That’s why I’m trying to find one.”

A moment later, Kenma had found a hotel which was a five-minute walk from the station. The pair made their way to the place, which seemed decent and was open. They walked up to the reception where there was a lady in a suit sitting, typing fast on a keyboard as she focused on her computer.
“Excuse me,” Kenma interrupted her work, “Do you have two rooms we can rent for tonight?”
The lady looked up at them, “I’m sorry, we’re fully booked. We only have a single room left.”
“We’ll take it!” Hinata replied eagerly, earning a look from the lady, who raised her eyebrow.
“Alright, I just need one of you to fill this out,” she placed a sheet in front of them and Kenma took over, scribbling down his details on the piece of paper. Once he was done, he swapped it for a key from the lady and they headed down the hallway.
“Why was she looking at us so weirdly?” Hinata asked.
Kenma shrugged. He didn’t know either, but once he unlocked the door to their room, he realised why.

The room wasn’t very big, just big enough for there to be a single bed and a night stand next to it, with some space on the floor to dump a bag or two.
“T-there’s only one bed?!” Hinata exclaimed as he entered after Kenma. “What do we do?”
“You don’t need to be so loud,” Kenma replied. “And we sleep.”
“L-let’s go and ask for another room!”
“It’s the last one they have, remember? And there’s no other hotels nearby.”
“Fine,” Hinata sighed, defeated, as he dumped his bag on the floor and sat down on the edge of the bed.
“Let’s go to sleep,” Kenma suggested, “We need to get up early tomorrow to get the train.”
“Right,” Hinata agreed, not that he had much else to do in their small hotel room.

The next day, after a long train ride home, Hinata and Kenma arrived at the station where they were picked up.
“Kenma! Don’t run off again like that,” Kuroo ruffled his hair.
“Sorry,” Kenma mumbled in return.
Hinata didn’t catch more of their conversation before he was surrounded by the other karasuno members.
“Hinata! We were worried about you,” Daichi scolded, “You should’ve answered when we called!”
“Y-yeah,” Hinata replied, dejected.
“Still, we’re glad to have you back safely,” he gave the first-year a smile. “You’ve missed morning practice, so you’ll have to make it up in afternoon practice.”
“R-right!” Hinata replied, standing up straight.

This wasn’t the first time that they were both sent on a trip together. As a battery, they were pretty much considered a package deal anyway. It also very much wasn’t the first time that they would be sharing a room ever since their days at Seido. Not that it bothered them, they had known each other for ten years already and their chemistry certainly played a lot in their great teamwork, and apparently also in requests that they be interviewed together.

Maybe Kazuya should have felt happiness at the closeness, but considering how much deeper than friendship his feelings actually ran, it had started to wear his patience thin. He couldn’t seem to spend a day without Eijun as he was a constant in both his professional and personal lifes.

Kazuya took the magnetic card the receptionist had left on the desk and he sighed before going to meet his partner at the elevators. The idiot was smiling, if only a bit nervously.

“So, Miyuki, how did it go ?”

He gave him a look.

“It’s just a check-in, stupid. How do you think it went ?”

“Well, I don’t know ! It’s America, they must be doing things differently there, no ?”

They climbed into the elevator with their small luggage for their albeit small journey abroad.

“I don’t think this applies to something mostly tourists would do.”

“But don’t tourists mostly do things that would go differently in their country when they’re abroad ?”

Sometimes, Eijun really baffled him with his simile thinking that really was just idiocy in disguise.

“You’re thinking too much - Wow, I never thought I would say that about you.”

He got hit in the arm just as the doors opened at their floor and they started heading to their room.

“Rude, Miyuki. Well I really can’t wait to hit the sack, I was two seconds away from jumping out of the plane.”

“That was big for you. So many hours, confined in a flying metal object, forced to behave.”

“Stop. Don’t even mention that I feel like I’ll develop PTSD.”

Kazuya chuckled while he stopped at the door 521 and slid it to open it. The light went green and the door opened to what he could only describe as his personal hell.

The room itself was fine. More than fine actually since it was clearly more upscale than what they had been used to in Japan. And so much more spacious too, thought Kazuya thought that it would be normal that there would be more space considering that this time, the sight of one bed greeted them.

Only. One. Single. Bed.

Kazuya’s brain momentarily stopped functioning. One ? As in the first number ? The first divisible number ? The number of children his parents had in total unless his father had been hiding things from him ? The number of brain cells Eijun works with at the same time ?

On his left, Eijun let out a deflated, nervous voice.

“Wow, that sure is a big bed.”

As his mind restarted, he couldn’t help but agree with his pitcher’s statement. He had heard that everything was bigger in America and seeing the skyscrapers, the roads, and now the king-sized bed, he was starting to think that this might not just be a stereotype.

He briefly wondered what Eijun thought of that and he considered looking at him briefly since he could always read him like an open book but dismissed the idea, terrified of what he would find.

In an effort at normalness, he picked out his suitcase again and rolled it inside. He heard Eijun mimicking him and he took a deep breath. He had to defuse the situation or they would keep moving like robots forever. He stood at the opposite side of the bed.

“Well, at least like this, there’s no risks you’ll kick me in your sleep, and if you do, I’ll know you were doing it on purpose. I’m gonna say it right now : I won’t hesitate to push you out.”

He finally looked at the pitcher and smiled at the offended look. In some corner of his mind, he filed away the redness he had noticed on Eijun’s face.

“It’s mine!” Sawamura squawked, lunging for the blanket atop the single bed in the hotel room they were destined to share on a road trip through north Japan, readying the team for the upcoming summer tournament.

‘An unfortunate mistake’, Oota-buchou had called it, but the hotel was booked and the two of them would have to make do.

Furuya wanted to make do with the bed and let Sawamura make do without, however.

“I got here first.” Furuya grabbed the other edge of the blanket and tugged at it. “I’m taller, so I get the bed.”

Sawamura scrunched his face and glared. “What does that have to do with anything? I’m older!”

“I throw harder.”

“I have more pitches!”

The two of them stood toe to toe, but Furuya won that battle when Sawamura broke away to dash toward the bathroom. “Too much tea! Too much tea!”

Fighting off a smile, Furuya crawled atop the covers, the cool spring night a welcome respite from Tokyo’s sweltering heat. May was far too early to fry in the sun.

Furuya curled up with the pillow in his arms, ignoring Sawamura’s protest when he emerged from the bathroom. There were a few tugs on the blanket in a futile effort to dislodge Furuya from his spot, as well as a few on his bare foot.

Eventually, though, even Sawamura had to give up, and he draped himself on the low couch lining the wall in the room. After several hours on a bus, it didn’t take long for both of them to succumb to the weariness from the road.

Only a bare stripe of light from the crack in the curtains illuminated the room when Furuya blinked himself awake to relieve himself. It wasn’t until he was climbing back into bed that he noticed.

Glancing over at the couch, Furuya saw Sawamura curled up with a throw blanket, and even from across the room, Furuya could see he was shivering. The northern weather was nothing to a Hokkaido resident, but people from the main island tended to underestimate nighttime temperatures.

Furuya shook his head and headed over for the couch to lift Sawamura into his arms. Aside from a small squeak of protest, he didn’t stir while Furuya tugged all the available bedding over his trembling body.

Slowly, the tension in Sawamura’s limbs eased and he found his way to a more restful sleep. Furuya grabbed a large towel from the closet and sprawled out on the couch instead. The room was a little chilly, but it only served to lull him to sleep faster.

It was a little after dawn when he was jolted from sleep by Sawamura’s loud yawn. A familiar face hovered over him with a smug smile. “Told you I’d win.”

“Did not,” Furuya protested in a sleep-logged voice before rolling over to put his back to Sawamura. “‘S early.”

With far too loud a laugh, Sawamura whipped away the towel and snapped it against Furuya’s backside. “Best time for running.”

Furuya was about to refute before he realized that Sawamura was right, so with a noiseless yawn, he scraped himself off the couch and trudged blindly toward the bathroom to get a start to his day.

As he brushed his teeth, Furuya debated telling Sawamura who really won the battle of the bed, but he decided against it. Even though they were fierce rivals after the same spot on the team, long after that they would still be something just as valuable: friends.

Besides, Furuya still knew who really won, and that was good enough for him.
