Immortality is boring.
Deathly boring loses all meaning in the face of immortality, but that’s what it’s like.
Especially when you’re confined to the same space. One square kilometer is tiny when compared to the world, and watching the construction sites only keeps one busy for so long.
Washio Tatsuki died a long time ago. So long ago in fact that he’s stopped counting the days, the years, the centuries even. All he knows is that he watched his small plot of barren land become a bustling city, all he remembers of himself is his name.
His favorite place to roam is the subway though, because the only thing that has kept him sane all this time and helped him fight the boredom are the people bustling about, day in day out.
He has some regulars - lots of them in fact, and he’s gleaned most of his knowledge from the people here, conversing idly. He’s learned that people don’t interact with each other unless they arrive at the subway together, chattering away.
Sometimes, at the beginning, he’d tried to interact with them, but he’d either been ignored, or those who did hear him made some kind of odd noise and skittered away. He’s heard that they say this subway is haunted, and guesses they’re talking about him.
Today, Washio watches the clock tick on, sat on a bench away from the crowd, letting the idle chatter wash over him. He’s glad he learned long ago how to make people avoid him; he doesn’t really like when anyone sits on the same seat he’s occupying, and he’s pretty sure they enjoy it just as much as he does, if the way they shiver and seem to try and brush themselves off after standing is any indication.
His row of seats stays empty all the way up until the clock indicates 22:07:03 and his absent thoughts are interrupted as someone sits one seat over from him.
Even after all these years, Washio is still curious -after all, curiosity may have killed the cat, but he is neither a cat, nor a mortal- and he can’t help but to want to study the living being next to him. And since they can’t see him anyway, he gives in to that desire very easily.
What he sees rather enchants him, not in the unusual eye and hair color in the sea of black and brown, but rather in the way the person holds themselves, in the gentle and warm presence they hold. In the slight upturn of lips as they look at the screen of a device he has learned to be a phone.
Washio stares openly, takes in the person - a man from what he can tell, not that that seems to matter anymore. He’s found out that some people can look like men and be women, and others can look like women and be men. And sometimes even, people just aren’t either of them. It was an odd concept for him at first, but he’s had a lot of time to sit and think about it, and he likes to think he understands. Not that it matters if he does or not, these people live their lives and make their choices, and his opinions matter not.
And so, Washio stares at them - maybe a man, maybe a woman, maybe neither, he doesn’t care, all he knows is that they’re interesting, and he wants to talk to them, the first time he’s wanted to speak in a very long time. The clock ticks on, gold eyes glimpsing at it every now and then, and Washio could swear that they seem to glance at him, too. But that’s not possible, the only people who have ever seen him have only run away, or tried to get rid of him, or even talked to him like he’s a child. Never has he had the pleasure of simply sitting in someone’s company, comfortable silence surrounding them in the hustle and bustle of the subway.
The voice announces the arrival of the train, and the blond rises. Washio feels something like disappointment go through him and he watches as they pause. Immortality takes most sensation away, but Washio recognizes warmth as it rushes through his being when those lively gold eyes land on him and pretty pink lips quirk, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Comes from them, in a gentle lull, and Washio watches as they disappear into the train, blond locks bouncing slightly with each step.
He watches them turn, they lock gazes, and something compels him to raise a hand and wave.
He gets a smile and a small wave back.
Maybe, Washio thinks slowly, just maybe immortality isn’t that boring after all.
