Even after sleeping through the entire flight, Haiji finds himself utterly exhausted by the time he reaches his hotel room. His eyelids droop, his shoulders slump, his legs prickle with a numb, all-encompassing weight. With a heavy arm, he throws his suitcase on top of the much too large mattress they’d supplied his room with. His body falls soon after, collapsing onto the surface of the bed. His muscles finally ease after the flight all the way across the world.
He’s been looking forward to this vacation alone for weeks. These are his first moments away from the clamour of airplanes, America, and tourism; not to mention the day to day chaos he’s grown accustomed to at Aotake. Finally, some peace and quiet.
But it wouldn’t last for long. From his pocket, Haiji’s phone rings twice before he wordlessly picks it up. Despite his tiredness, he sits up and rests his head against the headboard. Only one person could be calling him now— he doesn’t even bother to check the caller ID.
“It’s me,” Kakeru says, voice strained from the static.
Haiji can’t help it. Maybe it’s the fatigue, maybe it’s the result of his ability to find anything and everything Kakeru does to be completely hilarious. The top of his head hits the back of the hotel bed’s headboard when he collapses into a fit of giggles.
“That's all I get? No hello Haiji , how was your twelve hour flight to America, just 'it's me?' How disappointing.” He can feel his smile in his ears, now. And the fluttering in his stomach.“I thought I was something special to you, Kakeru."
"Hnght upfft," Kakeru muffles, and Haiji has to bite his lip to keep from laughing.
"What's that? I can't hear you, you have to speak up, captain ,” Haiji teases.
Kakeru can’t stand Haiji addressing him as captain. His reaction is cute, in person: his cheeks flush, he hides his stupidly adorable face, even the tips of his ears turn red. He’s not sure how it’ll be over the phone. "Shut. Up. Haiji.” Then, softer: “You know you're something special to me."
That settles it. Over the phone, still cute. So cute, in fact, that Haiji feels almost grateful Kakeru can’t see him.
"Yes, of course. You’re special to me as well, Kakeru."
Kakeru pauses. Haiji’s not sure what he’s thinking — he’s still new to this flirting with Kakeru on purpose thing. "So…” Kakeru starts, finally. “How is America?"
"So now you ask. It’s amazing. Incredible. Completely overwhelming. I passed eighteen fast food restaurants on the way back from the airport. Eighteen , Kakeru. And every single one of them is open twenty four hours a day."
"Shit. Really?”
"Yes, really,” Haiji chuckles. “All the commercial stuff, you'd hate it. But you'd also love it. It's so beautiful here. And there’s so much open space to run."
I wish you were here with me. Running means nothing without you.
He thinks of Hakone. Of running with Kakeru, running alongside the wind. He remembers their phone calls, the day of the race. The meticulous planning needed to earn a spot in next year’s race.
"What about you, Kakeru? You never call without texting first. What's going on?"
Kakeru pauses. "You just flew to America. I really only wanted to hear your voice…”
Haiji clicks his tongue. “That’s bullshit. I mean, no, it’s not bullshit. You called me because you find my lovely voice soothing, yes. But that also means you’re in need of being soothed.”
Haiji can practically hear Kakeru’s glower. “Forget I even called—“
“Don’t you dare hang up the phone, Kakeru. If you do, I’ll call Shindo and he’ll make you talk to me. Or even better, Musa . You’d never say no to Musa.”
“Alright, alright!” Kakeru cries . “I’m not hanging up! See! Still on the phone. But you can’t tell anyone I’m calling you. Not Shindo, not Musa, not the twins. Nobody.”
“Aha!” Haiji says, too excited. “So this is a secret call, then? Are you going to confess?”
What Haiji would give to see the look on Kakeru’s face now— “Confess? What? No!”
Haiji can’t decide if Kakeru is legitimately offended at the prospect of confessing to him. “Well, good. When you do confess, it better be in person, Kakeru. I’m only in America for half the year. I’ll be expecting the whole nine yards— flowers, a card, maybe even a cake.”
“Who gives someone a cake when they’re confessing?” Kakeru says, disbelieving but playful. Haiji snickers to himself. Finally broke down the Kakeru’s stiff, humorless barrier.
“You will, if you know what’s good for you. Anyway, what’s up?”
A flop sounds on the other end. Kakeru must’ve flipped over to his back. He’s probably covering his eyes with a forearm now, too: typical Kakeru moves that Haiji knows all too well at this point. “Ughhhhh.”
“Want me to take a guess?”
“No.”
“But you’re also not going to say what it is if I don’t.”
A pause. “...no.”
“Looks like we have a dilemma, then,” Haiji smirks.
Kakeru sighs, giving in. “The first practice is tomorrow.”
“And that makes you… nervous?”
“Definitely nervous,” Kakeru confirms. “Maybe even more than nervous. Agitated?”
Haiji chuckles. “You’re really stressed out about this, huh? And you thought calling your old captain for advice would be the best way to go.”
“Well, yes. But I didn’t just call you because you’re my old captain.”
Haiji furrows his brow. “Mm?”
“You’re… one of my best friends, Haiji. Maybe even more than that.”
More than best friends. Kakeru sees me as his more-than-friend? Does he even know what this sounds like? Better play it off as a joke. “And I thought we agreed you wouldn’t confess yet.”
“Haiji, I swear to god if you don’t shut up—”
“But, joking aside,” Haiji clears his throat. “If you’re nervous, you came to the right guy for advice.”
“Are you sure? Because right now I’m starting to regret it.”
Ouch. “Enough flirting, Kakeru.”
“How am I flirting? You’re flirting!”
“Let’s talk about tomorrow,” Haiji says, not missing a beat. He can’t think about flirting with Kakeru seriously without giving himself away. “What’s making you nervous?”
Kakeru composes himself. “Let’s see, um. We had a lot of signups over the summer, at least five of them are people I’ve never heard of before.”
“And? That’s great!”
“It is,” Kakeru affirms. “But that also means I’m gonna have to talk to all of them at once. Tomorrow.”
“I see,” Haiji says. He’s nervous about public speaking. It makes sense, for him. He does tend to just say the first thing on his mind, which could present it’s challenges in new group settings… “And that’s what’s making you nervous? Talking in front of new people?”
“Not just the new ones. The others, too, even though I know them. I think… I think I’m nervous they’re going to compare me to you,” Kakeru explains.
Haiji frowns. It’s a self confidence thing? Does Kakeru not see his worth? Even after breaking the single person running record, it still seems like he’s running this to prove something. Oh, well. This type of insecurity can’t be beaten overnight. I can still help give him temporary confidence, though. It’s the least I can do.
Kakeru takes Haiji’s silence as permission to continue. “And on top of that, I don’t have much experience with the, uh. Public speaking stuff. So do you maybe… have any advice?”
Haiji considers for a moment. “Public speaking advice.”
“Yes?”
Haiji doesn’t say anything for a second. Five seconds. Ten seconds, and he realizes Kakeru must think Haiji’s judging him. So he does all that he can: he laughs. It’s much too loud of a laugh to be humanly decent.
“What?” Kakeru says, bordering on defensive.
“Sorry, Kakeru. I’m not laughing at you, I promise. Okay, maybe just a little bit,” Haiji wipes away a tear.
“ What? ”
“You run in the Hakone Ekiden, you beat the single runner record in your first year trying. You’ve spoken on national television, and it’s like you don’t even notice the cameras are there. But talking in front of a few college students makes you nervous?”
“Shut up Haiji. It’s different—”
“You’re amazing, Kakeru,” Haiji says, and if he said this to anyone he’d worry they’d think he was joking. Not Kakeru, though. “Do you know that?”
“Huh?”
“You think that, because of your natural talent for running, your performance will suffer as a captain. But then, helping people comes to you naturally, too.”
Kakeru scoffs. “Are you sure you don’t have me mixed up with you?”
Haiji sits up straight. “I’m serious, Kakeru. I wouldn’t have appointed you captain if I didn’t think you would be amazing at it. When you started helping Prince…” Haiji recalls, smiling fondly at the memory of Kakeru correcting their housemate’s form. “I didn’t know if you’d be able to reach him, at first. But you proved me wrong. And I can’t help but admire that.”
“Haiji…” Is it just me, or does he sound choked up?
“You’ll be an amazing captain, Kakeru. You care for this team, almost too much. You’ll outdo me this year. Mark my words.”
“Haiji…” Kakeru stammers. “You flatter me…”
“As for public speaking,” Haiji continues blithely, “I would ask Shindo. I’m afraid I don’t have a clue.”
“ You can’t be serious—”
“But I am, captain. You know how gifted I am with simply getting along with anyone. You, on the other hand, need to put much more effort into it.”
There’s not a doubt in Haiji’s mind that Kakeru scowls, then. “Asshole. I shouldn’t have asked you.”
“ Captain, captain, captain,” Haiji chides mockingly, “Do you treat your teammates like this?”
“ Haiji. ”
Haiji yawns mid-grin, stretching both arms above his head. I guess I almost forgot I really was tired. As much as I love talking to him, I’ll collapse if I have to stay up much longer. “Hey, it’s getting late over here. Want to beat jet lag before it really gets to me. Any other questions before I go to bed?”
“How you think you can beat jet lag after a twelve hour flight is beyond me.”
“You know me,” Haiji smirks. “Superhuman strength and all that. Really though, I’m out. Anything else?”
“No,” Kakeru says softly, considering. “That’s it, I think.”
Haiji smiles, heart swelling. “I love you, Kakeru.”
“Yeah. Love you too.” Kakeru frowns, response instant. It had been instant the first time they’d said it, too. Even in Kakeru’s most uncertain moments, he’d always seemed certain about Haiji.
“You’re so cute when you scowl.” It’s true. I wish you could see yourself, maybe then you’d realize just how much you drive me crazy.
“You can’t even see me.”
“I don’t have to,” Haiji says, clicking his tongue. “I know you.”
“You should really get some rest, though.” Kakeru’s voice is soft, perhaps too soft of a voice to be using for just a teammate.
After all I put him through, he’s still always too kind to me. “Goodnight, Kakeru.”
“Bye.”
Kakeru hangs up first, of course. Haiji’s not sure if he’ll ever have it in him to hang up first on his junior.
He wishes he could be there, he wishes Kakeru could be with him in America. More than anything, he misses being together. Just six months, Haiji pleads. Let my heart last me until then.
