I freaking love this to pieces. Riko's determination to not make the same mistakes twice is illustrated beautifully with how critical she can be with the current state of her team. It's really bittersweet, but I'm happy to see the consequences of pushing the same players, especially Teppei with his knee, too hard being addressed. I love the hopeful note at the end, too.

School dances were the bane of almost every introverted student's life, your parents doll you up and send you off to go mingle with other people who you’ve seen almost every day as if the sudden change of clothes makes them more tolerable.

Yui was one of those students.

She didn’t really have a complaint about her parents dressing her up, the dress she wore was a simple knee-length white dress that flared at her waist. There were others in full ballgowns who were so dressed up she couldn’t even recognize them. Even if she did Yui doubted they would’ve interacted, she didn’t mingle much outside of the volleyball team and it seems like she was paying for it now.

Of the few girls from her team that did show up, some of them had come with dates, others were cliqued up with people she didn’t talk to and the last thing Yui wanted was to become someones third wheel. So she just crossed the room and avoided the dance floor, she didn’t want to be one of those people that stood around just drinking punch either but anything was better than just standing alone.

“Well hello, there stranger.” Yui turned at the voice behind her, relaxing when she sees it’s only Daichi. He was a good example of someone that didn’t look much different even when dressed up in a suit.

“Oh finally, someone not in a corner making out, hey Daichi. “ She greets.

Daichi chuckles, “Koushi and Asahi are busy with each other right now. What’s your excuse?” He teases lightly

Yui rolls her eyes and lightly punches him in the arm. “Very funny, who would I even be coupled up with?”

Daichi rubs the spot but is too used to random punches to be bothered. “I can think of someone. About 165 centimeters, black hair, pink glasses brown eyes and standing right behind you.” This time Yui does jump in surprise, only to give Daichi a dirty look and another arm punch when seeing that there was no one behind her. “Don’t give me that look. You know if Shimizu asked you’d be there in a heartbeat.”

“If she asked.” Yui points out. “She’s practically the school idol, she’s probably being asked to dance with who knows how many other people right now.”

“Doesn’t mean she’ll say yes to them,” Daichi says.

”Doesn’t mean she’ll ask me either.” Yui counters.

”I said the same thing when I was worrying about Koushi.” Daichi reminds her. “And what did you say to me?”

“I just punched you and told you to stop being a baby and ask them out,” Yui admits.

“Now I’m not going to punch you because that would be rude, but what I will do is tell you to turn around and good luck,” Daichi says walking away.

”I’m not falling for that ag-”

“Excuse me.” A soft voice interrupts from behind her. This time when Yui turns around she’s greeted by her crush in person. Kiyoko’s hair was in a high ponytail for once and she was dressed in a long floor length peach gown that was both simple and elegant. Needless to say, Yui was speechless. “Would you like to be my dance partner?”

It took Yui a moment to remember how to talk, finally able to respond with a small “Gladly,” as she took Kiyokos hand in hers and lead the other girl to the dance floor. Now dancing wasn’t something Yui knew how to do, only knowing the basic steps from what she’s seen other people do on Tv and what she sees from people are doing around her.

None of this mattered when she has Kiyokos hand in hers, so she wrapped one hand around her waist and kept their other hand clasped together. They didn’t do any fancy steps and Yui could see that Kiyoko was as unfamiliar with what to do as she was at dancing. And as the two girls swayed across the floor they realized that didn’t matter as long as the two of them were enjoying each other.

Neither of them noticed when the song changed to the next one, or the next, the only thing that mattered were each other's soft hands and the company of the other.

It's not like it was his only purpose in life.

Shougo does spend an ungodly amount of time picking up girls and finding new ways to cheat during tests, and when he has enough cash he'd go to an arcade to play mindless shooting or fighting games to kill time. He has plenty of things to do to fill his days, since his entire existence doesn't revolve around basketball and stupid feuds, unlike some people he knows.

Except he's set himself the goal to stay at the top and not let anyone humiliate him again. Of course it went awry in that fucking match against Ryouta, and now he's left with all the resentment he has for that stupid sport he's pursued for years even when nobody actively sought his talent. He's carried that weight and anger and it all amounts to nothing, for he is still the second choice—not strong enough to beat the one who stole his spot, not clever enough to stay away from a pair of goddamn shoes that aren't that essential to keep on living.

Maybe, if he really wants to put everything behind and start anew, he has to accept he did devote a part of himself to proving he's as worthy as the others. Maybe he needs to admit he never stomached the rejection and that he was driven by hate. His captain would spout some bullshit about knowing yourself before making life-changing decisions.

He lost to Ryouta; so what? He's still an athletic man extremely good at basketball. Being a prodigy isn't the only way to make a name among his peers.

When he shows up at practice after New Year's, basketball shoes shoved inside his duffel bag, he mostly gets questioning glances as well as a few stares. He usually isn't one to care much about practice, after all. His captain approaches him with the briefest nod of acknowledgment, like he expected Shougo to show up despite how badly the Winter Cup ended.

“I suppose you want to play seriously?” Ishida asks.

“I'll play however I want, as long as I get stronger,” Shougo replies with a shrug. He surveys the gym, then a smirk is tugging at his lips. “I'll show those bastards that I don't need to be a Miracle to beat their asses.”

They might not like his aggressive play or his desire to stomp on people weaker than him, but they don't have to like him to know he's a good player.

Zanba wanders through the woods. He's lost; he's been lost for a while. Apparently the woods aren't a shortcut between the shaved ice store and school, like he'd thought.

Coach is going to be so angry when Zanba doesn't show up for practice. It isn't his fault, though, that the woods are so deep and dark and twisty.

Zanba's hungry again. He's always hungry, but he'd tried not to eat too much before practice today, and all this walking has him really hungry.

He keeps walking, hoping to find his way out. It's weird- he didn't think there were any forests like this so close to school, where you could keep walking and walking and never see any signs of people or a way out.

Just as his stomach lets out a growl, he sees it. A clearing, and in the clearing, a house. The strangest, most wonderful house Zanba has ever seen.

It's made of cake. Thick bricks of cake, stuck together with anko. The roof looks to be made of chocolate wafers. Zanba can smell the sweetness on the air; his mouth waters.

He dashes forward and breaks off a piece of roof. Despite the fact that it's sitting in the middle of a forest, it's the best choco-wafer he's ever had, sweet and crisp as it melts in his mouth. Greedily, he breaks off another piece of roof, and then digs his big hands into the walls to pull out chunks of honey cake.

It's delicious.

"Hey!"

Zanba looks up. A boy looks out at him from a window, frowning.

"Don't just eat other people's houses," says the boy. He has weird hair, red like raspberry ice with white curls.

"Sorry," Zanba apologizes around a mouthful of cake. He swallows. "Is this your house?"

"...no." The boy flushes. "I got lost, and this was the first place I found. I'd hoped someone would be home and give me directions."

Oh, so he's also lost. Interesting.

"I'm lost too,” admits Zanba. “So, you broke in?" He isn't trying to sound accusing, but the boy turns so red his face almost matches his hair.

"The door was open," he answers defensively. "And it's not like I started eating the walls."

"Ok." Zanba licks the crumbs off his hand, "It's really good, though."

The boy bites his lip and looks over at the hole Zanba made. Zanba thinks maybe it looks smaller than it did before. The boy doesn't look like he's angry anymore, though; he looks hungry.

“Can I come in, too?” Zanba asks. He pauses, then introduces himself. “I'm Zanba Ryujin.”

“Nice to meet you,” the boy replies. “I'm Sekizan Takuya.” He pauses. “I suppose we can wait for someone together, if we're both lost. But don't eat any more of the walls.”

“Ok.” It's disappointing- the cake is really good- but it makes sense. He wouldn't want someone eating his house, either. As Zanba walks around to the door, he takes a last look at where he'd carved out chunks of wall.

The side of the house is perfectly smooth.
