Talkback

Talkback is now closed! Please send any urgent issues directly to the head mods.

Talkback
Talkback is a place for you to give your feedback about how the event could be improved. While the future of SportsFest is uncertain (the
Head Mods are stepping down after this year’s event), we still believe it is important to gather your suggestions so that possible future mods can have the tools to excel where this event fell short.

How to Participate:

There’s two main ways to participate in Talkback!

  1. Reply to this post in a comment. Other participants will be able to participant in the discussion, and your feedback will not be anonymous. Mods will also be able to participate in the discussion, unless you specify that you’d prefer we not reply to your feedback.

  1. Submit this Google Form. Your feedback will be completely anonymous.

Additionally, if you’re not comfortable with either of these options, you can send an email to the Official Mod Email Account (sportsfest.mods@gmail.com) with the subject line “Sportsfest 2018 Talkback.”

This is totally optional, and not for points. This is only to improve any future iterations of the event (and the mod team’s event running skills).

You may choose to answer under each individual topic, or make a single bulk feedback comment on the post.

Main Talkback Points:

Under this post there’s a detailed comment of all of the topics we’ve been talking about and some of our discussion points, but here are some of the main takeaways:

  1. How did SportsFest go generally? What were the biggest hang-ups, and what worked well?

  2. What are your thoughts on nominations and team sign-ups?

  3. How did Main Round and Bonus Rounds go? What was your least favorite and most favorite aspect?

  4. Should AfterHours remain closed to the public? Or should we make it a NSFW community open to the public?

  5. How do you feel about the platforms that we hosted this event on (Dreamwidth, Discord)? Can you think of alternatives that might have worked better?

  6. What role do you want the Discord to play after the event concludes?

Please, please do not feel like you have to answer every single question! They are just meant to be a starting point.

Etc.

We’ve listed some of the questions and topics we’ve been thinking about over the course of the event below (in the comments!). You’re free to comment on them or you may choose to comment on any other aspect of the event. Any aspect of the event is considered fair game for Talkback.

Final scores should be out soon! Thank you for your patience!

Please contact the mods if you have any questions.

You know if you had messaged me you were that unhappy with the post I would have deleted it. And had no hard feelings about it. I would have done something else.

Courtesy goes two ways. That would have been a more respectful way to deal instead of stewing about it and posting in a public talkback post about it. Also, calling another creator's efforts insincere is in my opinion hurtful. How would you have felt if the shoe was on the other foot?

Also, I have never and will never repost someone's work without permission. If you recalll I messaged you asking permission before posting anything to twitter - giving your line art credit- and was given permission.

There are multiple methods of coloring. One is not more valid than another. But like I said I would have deleted it if you merely asked.

Hey, I just want to put in my two cents here because I have been in Hayley's situation before and can perhaps explain why it's something that one doesn't want to bring up personally when the thing has already been done. As far as I can tell, Hayley did not bring any names or use any specifics in their post. I wouldn't have known it applied to you had you not replied to that effect.

This is all not the point. The point is that in a previous year of SASO, I had one of my linearts coloured, and at the time I had given blanket permission because I too wasn't aware that it was something one could do. My impression of remixes was NOT at all any form of editing of the original work, so to have this happen was a bit of a shock to me. I really don't like having my work edited in any way, whether it's colouring it or otherwise, but the problem here was that I'd already given permission for remixes and the person (a friend) who'd done it wasn't wrong to do so.

I never said anything about it because a) it was due to my own carelessness about not making sure what was and wasn't a remix b) the remix was already done! I could just leave it at me feeling awkward about it, or I could ask my friend to take it down and they'd feel bad about it too. And even if they took it down, I'd know that it had been done-- I'd already seen it. So what would the point be in making BOTH of us feel bad?

I know you read Hayley's post and felt it was personal. But please don't take it that way-- as artists we just want to avoid the situation in future, not hold grudges about something that's already happened in the past.

Perhaps in future events artists can put if they are ok with editing/coloring in the heading or perhaps it will be stated in the rules a whole new creation must be made.

Personally I'm ok with someone coloring my works for this event and I purposely left several line art style in case somebody wanted to color. I did receive several color remixes and appreciated the effort and the time the person put in.

I'm sure your friend felt they were making you a nice gift. And you were kind to be understanding of it. And thank you for your post being from a place of understanding. Of course there Is no sense in holding a grudge and hopefully if the event occurs next year things can be spelled out more clearly so no one has a question as to what is allowed.

K, thanks for sharing your own experience and perspective. I empathise so much with this because I this is exactly how I felt, and why I chose to not say anything. You communicated it better than I could ever hope to.

Once it's happened, it's done. The time was spent and the image was seen already. The only reason why I brought it up in the first place is that mods are in the position to enact changes to avoid these kinds of misunderstandings.

We're all artists in fandom. It just makes sense to try be kind and courteous and not assume everyone has the same levels of comfort when it comes to how other people interact with our work.

Thank you again, K.
