“The problem is: I need my glasses to find my glasses.”
Aoyagi could understand that. Koga apparently needed his glasses to find anything. This included the correct book and homework for each subject, so Aoyagi found himself crossing the aisle to Koga’s desk each time he needed something out of his bag.
Each time he came over, Koga leaned so close their faces almost touched, squinting at Aoyagi’s face with the utmost concentration. Obviously he was just trying to see, but it looked like he was going around glaring at everything.
The expression was so different from usual, Aoyagi found it strangely endearing. It was kind of cute how grumpy he looked searching around for a dropped pencil. Many of their other classmates were giving Koga a wide berth today, especially if he looked their way, but Aoyagi didn’t really mind being looked at so intensely.
When they had to switch rooms for art, Aoyagi quickly took Koga’s hand to lead him down the hallway. Otherwise, he might miss the room and get turned around. Aoyagi didn’t want to lose track of him even for a moment.
Walking next to them, Teshima laughed into his hand, not being exactly subtle about it.
Aoyagi gave him a look. He shifted his grip on Koga’s hand, lacing their fingers together. He was Koga’s eyes today and no one had better have a problem with that.
“I know. You have dibs.” Teshima held up a hand in surrender. “You’re just making a cute face, that’s all.”
Aoyagi nodded, accepting Teshima’s surrender.
Koga startled him by stopping dead, taking him by the chin, and tilting his face up to look at him seriously once again. Before Aoyagi could figure out what that was about Koga had let go again.
(Art was interesting. Teshima made playful comments about Monet’s cataracts and how Koga should be improved now. Koga kept touching his knee under the table. Aoyagi got the feeling he didn’t have much interest in working on something he couldn’t see anyway and thus, for some reason, Aoyagi become the most interesting thing around.)
Over just a few hours Aoyagi felt he was learning very quickly how to look after Koga. He learned to keep an eye out for obstacles at Koga’s height, for example, after only one mishap. He led Koga out to their usual lunch spot without having him stumble over anything or knocking his head on even one branch.
When they were settled, Koga bent almost double trying to see what was in his bento. He was squinting so hard his brow furrowed in concentration.
Aoyagi put his own lunch aside for the moment and took the chopsticks out of Koga’s hand.
“You’re not offering to try and feed me.”
“I am.” Aoyagi moved closer, not thinking he needed any more answer than that.
Koga caught his chin again. He put his face so close Aoyagi half-closed his eyes on reflex, expecting a kiss.
“I hate that I can’t see your expressions.”
Aoyagi blinked his eyes open again in surprise. He knew he didn’t have a very expressive face. He didn’t think Koga was missing much.
“It’s fine.”
“It’s not fine. If I can’t read your face or your movements, I can barely guess what you’re feeling at all!”
Aoyagi was still for a moment, absorbing this. Koga didn’t look as cute now, with his honestly troubled frown.
“I like being your eyes,” he finally said. “I enjoyed being close to you all day.”
Koga relaxed slightly. “I’m glad.” He let go of Aoyagi’s chin and ran a hand affectionately through his hair instead.
“I keep thinking you’re going to kiss me when you do that,” Aoyagi added. Because maybe if Koga couldn’t see he didn’t realize, and he wouldn’t notice how Aoyagi felt about that.
“So then you’re saying I should follow through.”
Aoyagi nodded, feeling his jaw tighten just a bit in embarrassment.
Koga must have saw, because he took Aoyagi’s face in his hands again, and did just that.
