Arakita finishes his degree and Toudou does a week later. It's time, he thinks. High time that they take another step; maybe it's his instincts or something similar that make him stop in front of a ring store.
He's on his way to a graduation party, Toudou will be there and...
He could just propose tonight couldn't he?
The store has a bell that rings overhead as Arakita enters the store. Two nicely dressed women welcome him and ask if they can help him. He knows he looks broke as they come. College students always do.
And most of them ARE broke like some god damn twig someone stepper on. That's how broke most students are.
"Ring." he says and already counts how much he can afford. He isn't a shopping addict like Toudou so he has a couple savings but it's not much to speak of. "I want a ring."
The woman points at a section of the store where rings are lined up. The other one speaks for her.
"We've got a sale going on for some of them." She says and Arakita nods, wandering off to look at the rings. Silver...gold... gem stones... different shapes...
Everything's so shiny he's getting a headache. He'll prevail for Toudou. He will do his best and just... propose. He won't take the on-sale items, no, he'll find something pretty and valuable.
Because that's what Toudou is, to him. Arakita turns away, feeling his face flush a bit. Not that he cares but... the saleswomen don't have to see his face like this.
He distracts himself and wills the heat in his face to go away by actually searching for a good ring. Gold isn't Toudou's colours. They've often said so; too often. So silver it is then. Silver...
Maybe with a nice gemstone. Midnight purple like Toudou's eyes. There's a couple of silver rings with amethysts on them. They're all beautiful, one more than the next. The gem stone probably shouldn't be too big... Toudou doesn't like things too flashy; they've said that before too. That dressing with style is hard and so on...
So Arakita decides on a thinner ring, not looking at the price and taking it over to the counter. It's not as expensive as he's expected but still. Still painfully expensive.
Arakita guesses he'll have to live off fast food and water until next paycheck then. It's worth it, he's sure, as he pockets the ring and continues on his way.
Now he only hopes that he got Toudou's ring size right...
--
Arakita finds Toudou at the party, drink in hand and conversing with Shinkai and someone he doesn't recognize. He doesn't make his way straight to there. No, he'll take his time with this.
He stuffs a hand into his pocket and feels the square shape of the ring container.
This is happening. It's happening.
Arakita goes to grab himself some... water to cool off. He's getting too excited. He needs to wait a bit. Maybe until it's nice and dark outside. Then he'll pull Toudou aside and...
He chockes on his water.
--
It's close to midnight and Arakita has Toudou hanging off him. No, they're not drunk. Tipsy, maybe, but otherwise them being drunk is a bad act.
They often do that, use their fake drunkeness to cling to Arakita and babble and have fun.
It's cute, this habit of theirs. Arakita quite enjoys it, but to uphold his image he rolls his eyes and puts up an annoyed facade. It's their game and theirs alone.
And when Toudou makes a kissy face, all demanding smooches, then Arakita gives in because he can't really deny Toudou anything much. He kisses them, short and swift, then pulls them away from the crowd and out of the party's main room. He's not big on publicity when it comes to affections; and besides...
To propose he really would rather be alone. There's a dried out fountain in the small garden beside the party's location. Toudou takes the lead and pulls him over to it so they can sit down.
Arakita enjoys the silence for a moment. No music, no people talking. Even Toudou is quiet and gazes up at the stars in the night sky with awe. Everything is serene.
He takes their hand and holds it. Just. Holds it. For a moment that's all he does. Outwardly at least. Inwardly... he's planning.
Planning on how to propose. He's forgotten that for a bit, has enjoyed the party and treated himself to some fries.
Half of which Toudou ate.
"You remember. When we first moved here?" Toudou asks, eyes never leaving the sky. "You said it was too small and..."
"I'm pretty sure that was you!" Arakita exclaims, too embarrassed to admit that he did indeed find many things wrong with the flat back then.
"It wasn't!" Toudou tilts their head down, poking his side. He yelps. "It was you, moon-howler."
"Forest ninja!"
"Useless gay!"
Toudou laughs after the exchange and Arakita shakes his head. They're about to fall into silence again but he moves before the moment can dissipate. Leaves the fountain and gets on one knee before Toudou - one wobbly knee, he's moved too fast - and grabs for the ring case in his pocket.
He holds it up to Toudou's nose and then he has to look away. He's embarrassed; but he does manage to open it to show the ring off.
"Listen, bathroom hog." He mutters. "I mean, 'pachi, I wanna. I wanna be the one to pull you through life."
Toudou is quiet for a moment.
"Tomo-chan." They mutter and Arakita looks back at them. There's tears - but way less than he's expected. With their left hand hold up and towards him, they half-grin. Arakita takes their hand, looking up for confirmation that this is okay.
"That's my ring now." They say, mischievous and sob. "Put it on so that I can be yours."
Arakita slips it on, right on the ring finger and gets an armful of Toudou on him the next moment. They both end up on the ground.
"Let me pull for you too." Toudou openly sobs now. "I love you. I love you so much."
Arakita looks up at the night sky now, gently running a hand through Toudou's hair. He feels less tense now that this is over - but also more excited about the future.

It's a weird feeling. He likes it.
