You’ll never win against me by stopping thinking.

That’s what he had told Sadaharu when they met again and he always took pride in being able to predict humans, but right now, more than anything, Renji wished for his brain to shut down, to stop analysing everything, to stop.

In the deafening silence of the empty house the faintest murmur reminded of a notification sound, and in the darkness of a late evening every passing car’s reflector casted a bright ray of light onto his nightstand where he had laid his phone in the vain hope of eliminating the nasty habit of checking it for no reason. This has proven itself to be ineffective, however, as from the corner of his eye it was awfully easy to mistake a flashing reflection for the screen lighting up.

Sorry about the silence, Renji, I’ve been busy lately. I could make it up to you this weekend, if you have time?

…is what you’ll say.

from: Akaya
>> sorry abt the hour senpai but i have an english test tmrw and i forgot abt it pls help me DD:

Renji groaned in frustration and refrained himself from throwing his phone against a wall or sending a rude response to Akaya’s request. Realistically, it wasn’t his junior's fault.

It wasn’t Sadaharu’s either, really, no matter how much he wanted to blame him. They weren’t friends anymore, but it was easy, falling back into old patterns and revisiting old feelings. History liked to repeat itself, but in the end no one can turn back time and despite all the calculations he’s made and carefully executed steps in his plan he was unable to bring their relationship back to the state from before they parted.

He’s forgotten to account for the fact that he wasn’t Sadaharu’s priority anymore, he’s moved on. They both have, but Renji was the only one who was fully consciously walking back, while his friend remained steadily pacing ahead with his new teammates. Renji was an afterthought is his life, present only when he chose to look back or stumbled and fell behind.

Sadaharu has taken to calling him after a few weeks of silence, apologizing, sincerely, it would seem, and then repeating the pattern again. Always after dark, drumming his fingers against something and rushing through his words. Nervous for some reason.

The last time he seemed aware of this. For someone who analyses everything, he was surprisingly clueless about his own emotions.

I’m sorry, I sound strange. I haven’t been feeling too well lately, maybe I’m falling sick.

Renji was certain he wouldn’t call this time, he expected a text instead.

The phone stayed silent the whole night.
