Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Bonus Round 2: Quotes

Sometimes you just have to keep with tradition! Keeping with the SASO roots that SportsFest was born from, Bonus Round 2 is all about quotes.

This bonus round will close on July 13th, 2018 11:59PM PT. [COUNTDOWN]

This Round is CLOSED, but is perpetually open for new FILLS.

Rules

The Rule of Thumb for this round is prominence - did a published author or poet write this line you’d like to quote? Great. Is it from a speech or a historical document? Cool. Did your friend say something funny on twitter the other day? Not so much.

Please DO NOT prompt screenshots of private conversations, Discord convos, or conversations between you and your friends. This can easily and unintentionally bring the prompts into inside joke territory, and can create an exclusionary environment.

Quotes from other SportsFest participants (or yourself) are NOT allowed in this round (for similar reasons to above, and the fact that you could just make anything a quote).

Please give credit to the original speaker of your quote whenever possible.

If prompting with a screenshot, it is polite to post a transcription of the text below the image for accessibility.

Please use your best judgement, and if you’re unsure if something qualifies - ask! The mods are here to help.

And to reiterate, Your prompt MUST include one or more specific nominated fandoms. Please do not prompt "Fandom: Any".

A Few Examples:

“Today is far from Childhood -
But up and down the hills
I held her hand the tighter -
Which shortened all the miles-
- Emily Dickinson, ‘One Sister Have I In Our House’

“Til this moment I never knew myself”
- Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN GO HERE!
- Damian, Mean Girls

“It's a quarter past midnight

As we cut through the city”
- Quarter Past Midnight, Bastille

If Prompting

Please use the following subject line for prompt:

Prompt: [Your Team]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Prompts

EXPLICITLY NSFW PROMPTS must be posted to the after-hours comm. “Explicitly NSFW” means that the prompt includes outright sexual content (whether in a photograph, drawing, or in words), and prompts that in the additional requests are asking for explicit fills. Prompts are posted with the same HTML format, in the same manner as a SFW prompt, just under the designated post for that Bonus Round in the after-hours comm. See ‘Filling’ for the procedures for NSFW Fills.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

If Filling

Minimums

Required Work Minimums:

  • 400 words (prose)

  • 400px by 400px (art)

  • 14 lines (poetry)

There is no max work cap.

Format

FILL: [Your Team], [Rating]

  • Replace [Your Team] with the name of the team you belong to. Nickname or Official Name are both acceptable

  • Replace [Rating] with the rating of your fill (G-E).

Copy/Paste the following into the body of your comment. Delete all instructional text in parentheses.

NSFW Fills

All NSFW fills must be posted in the corresponding Bonus Round post in the After Hours community. If filling a prompt that has been posted on the after-hours comm, simply reply to that prompt. If filling a SFW prompt, let the prompter know by replying to the original prompt on the main comm with a link to your fill on the corresponding after-hours Bonus Round Post. Please do not use the Fill subject line or Fill header when cross-linking. This will cause the BR scorer to count your fill twice.

Once you have joined the Afterhours community, you can find the corresponding post HERE.

Scoring

The scoring for bonus rounds depends on the number of people (n) on your team. You’re welcome to make as many prompts and fills as you like!

For prompts: 5 points per prompt, limited to 5 times the number of team members (5n)

For fills, where (n) = number of members on you team:

  • First 5n fills: 20 points each

  • Fills 5n to 10n: 10 points each

  • Fills 10n to 15n: 5 points each

  • All fills after 15n: 2 points each

Confused? Don’t worry; math is hard. Check out the Bonus Round Point Widget to help you figure out the point scale for your team.

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Additional Information

If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post). We’ll also have a prompt/fill database up and running soon that will help you filter through BR posts.

If you’d like more information, you can look at the [BR GUIDELINES]

You can also post your Fills to the Official AO3 Collection.

A Tip: We all want SportsFest to be a fun and safe environment. If you notice someone has made a mistake in their required tagging, or any other html or rules related aspect of their comment, do let them know, message them privately rather than replying - if you reply, they can’t edit the comment! If you aren’t comfortable letting the commenter know directly, contact a mod and we will make sure they update the required tags.

If you have any other concerns about Bonus Round Prompts/Fills, you can use this anonymous form to bring them to the mod team. You can submit Bonus Round concerns using this Google Form.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask a mod.

I!!!!! LOVE!!!!!! THIS!!!!!!! this is LOVELY it's not too plain at all!! i love the simplicity of it in fact; i think the song is simple in that it doesn't have a lot of lyrics. i mean, like, it doesn't crowd the music with lyrics?? I'M BAD AT MUSIC SO IDK IF I'M EXPLAINING WELL BUT!! your comic reflects that with its simple colors and use of white space, and the emotions evoked are even stronger for it

listen, i just love everything about this--tsukki watching hinata, hinata turning back to him and smiling, the soft orange you used for hinata, TSUKKI!!! SMILING!!! this is everything to me. i love it so much. i was hoping this would get filled for tsukihina because vienna teng lyrics are always so gentle and quiet and that's how i imagine tsukki's love and adoration would be: gentle and quiet. you've captured that perfectly in these panels

you are so so so good, thank you so much for filling this, i love it so much and i love you so much, you always blow me away with everything you do!!

***

The apartment was quiet… maybe a little bit too quiet.

Sitting on the couch in the living room, Victor couldn’t help but to remember a time when this place was always quiet aside from Makka’s occasional barking, or the noise of the TV.

Every inch of the apartment was totally different now, even in the silence.

Every place within it that was once grey and lacking personality was now filled with color and light.

The walls in the living room had been painted a light blue and were covered in photos from different parts of his and Yuuri’s lives. To name a few, they had two on either side of the door so they could look at them before they left the apartment. The two closest to the doorframe were from after their first Grand Prix Final together and from a vacation they took about a year ago in Paris. Next to the vacation photo was a smaller photo containing a young, happy Victor hugging his new poodle. While next to the other was a very young Yuuri hugging Vicchan.

There was also a coat rack on the left side of the door next to the two pictures, filled with coats for all different occasions of all different colors. And on the right side, underneath the pictures was a table with a bowl where they both put their all their keys when they entered the apartment. Right next to the bowl was a picture frame with an image of himself, Yuuri, and Yurio in Victor’s pink convertible from two summers ago.

Further into the apartment, Victor had bought a case for the two of them to display any awards they had ever won, each labeled with a date, the competition, and what place they earned. The case was always lit up, spotlights shining upon every medal within it. But the most important thing in that case wasn’t any of the gold, silver, or bronze medals they got from competitions over the years, but rather the picture frame right in the center of the case on the top shelf that contained an image of the two of them on their wedding day, showing off their gold rings.

Before Yuuri came along, Victor had a place to display his medals, but after the second year of winning gold nonstop, he gave up displaying them and just started putting them wherever he could find a spot. Some were thrown in the closet, some on the coffee table, some on the bookshelf, and everywhere in between. After another year, the medals devolved from being meaningless to being a cruel reminder of how truly alone he was. Every single gold reminded him of what he gave up life and love for.

By the time Yuuri moved in, he had taken every medal on display and every medal tossed about the apartment and shoved them in a drawer so he never had to look at them. The only reason he took them out again was because Yuuri insisted they be displayed alongside his own. It was only fair considering Victor was the one encouraging Yuuri to display all his medals. So he removed them from the drawer in which they were cast away, and displayed them proudly next to everything his husband had ever won. Now they were less of a reminder of his loneliness, and more a reminder of all the hard work he did to gain someone like Yuuri as his fan.

Plus, Victor found it absolutely adorable when he would sometimes catch Yuuri standing in front of the case and staring at the medals in awe. His #1 fan could name every single competition he had ever participated in, plus what medal he got for each, and it made Victor swoon every time.

Victor got up from his spot on the couch after he finished staring at their wedding photo in the case and headed into the kitchen. Even this room was filled with new light since Yuuri came to live with him. They had aprons with corny sayings hung from hooks on the wall, colorful placemats on the table, candles on the counter, dirty dishes in the sink, and even one of those wooden pictures with the saying: A pinch of patience, A dash of kindness, A spoonful of laughter, and a heap of Love, hung right above their table for all to see when they walked in.

The kitchen actually got used like it was meant to now, plus in some ways it was probably not meant to. It had become much more than just a room since Yuuri moved in, and was one of Victor’s favorite places to spend time with his husband.

Because yes, they were the type of sickeningly in love couple who danced in the kitchen, and had flour fights, and splashed water at one another while they did the dishes. They even had romantic candle-lit dinners, and cooked for each other as a surprise, and made-out on the granite counter. The two of them filled the room with laughter and love and music almost every single day of their lives. Yurio would probably call all of that disgusting, but Victor just called it happiness.

After making himself a cup of coffee (in a mug that had World’s Best Husband written in gold script on it), Victor made his way to their bedroom so he could fold some clothes that were sitting in a basket on the bed.

The boring grey sheets that once covered the memory foam mattress were now replaced with dark purple ones because the two of them couldn’t decide whether to get blue or pink and had to compromise. On top of the sheets laid a bunch of pillows, some that matched the sheets in color, and others that were thrown to them by fans after performances. Yuuri’s personal favorite was the stuffed onigiri he got during his first Grand Prix series with Victor as his coach, while Victor’s was a crochet version of Makkachin.

Above their bed was two large canvas paintings, one which read Life and the other which read Love. They were painted different hues of blue and pink and purple, bringing a splash of color to the light grey walls. On each of their nightstands they had different wedding pictures, one of their first kiss as husbands, and another of them laughing with their foreheads pressed together.
Victor no longer despised sleeping in this room because now there was always someone there to fall asleep with and wake up to. They were both big cuddlers, so they almost always woke up in one another’s arms, making Victor’s heart burst each and every time.

When Victor was finally able to tear his gaze away from the wedding photos, he began folding the clothing on the bed. While he worked, he decided to put on some music so the time would pass a bit faster. Swaying his hips, and singing, he organized piles of clothing and put each of them away where they belonged.

Just as he was finishing up, he heard the lock click on the door and immediately dropped what he was doing to go greet his husband.

“Vitya, I’m home!” Yuuri called as he swung open the door and dropped his keys in the bowl. He turned his head to the left to see that his husband was already walking towards him with a big smile on his face.

“Welcome home, zolotse,” Victor said while stopping a few feet in front of him, “How was your run?”

Yuuri bent down to unclip Makka’s leash from her collar while Victor spoke. “Fun, but tiring! Makka hasn’t gotten any slower over the years.” He gave Makka a pat on the head before the panting dog took off towards her water bowl to get a drink.

“She sure does love to run,” Victor commented, glancing over at their dog, then back at Yuuri.

Nodding, Yuuri hung Makka’s leash up on a hook near their coats and turned to face Victor so he could say something. But much to his surprise, when he turned around, Victor was right in front of him, arms open so he could pull Yuuri into a tight hug. He couldn’t help but to laugh a little, wriggling in Victor’s grasp. “Vitya, I’m so sweaty, you probably don’t want to hug me.”

Victor just hugged him tighter, pulling him as close as he possibly could and nuzzling his nose into the crook of Yuuri’s neck. “I always want to hug you, Yuuri,” he mumbled, closing his eyes and smiling against Yuuri’s skin.

Giving up, Yuuri wrapped his arms around Victor in return, unable to resist. It wasn’t unusual for Victor to want to hug Yuuri, but something seemed a little off about this particular hug, and it concerned Yuuri, probably more than it should have. “Vitya, is everything alright?”

He nodded, but didn’t loosen his arms around Yuuri at all. “More than alright, zolotse.”

“Are you sure?”

Victor nodded again, this time pulling back from their hug enough to see Yuuri’s face. “Very sure. I’ve never been happier.”

Yuuri offered him a smile before leaning in to give Victor a quick kiss. “Okay, as long as you’re sure, Vitya.” He brought one of his hands up to Victor’s face to brush some of his still perfect silver hair out of his eye a bit. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Victor responded, smiling fondly at Yuuri, “More than you could ever know.” He pulled Yuuri back into another hug, the two of them swaying back and forth slowly as they stood there in each other’s arms.

There was so much that Victor wanted to thank Yuuri for, so much that he had to say but he just couldn’t find the words. One day though, he would find an incredibly romantic and probably ridiculously extra way to tell Yuuri that he made his house a home, and that he brought bright colors back into his life again, and that without a doubt, every place was a better place with Yuuri.

i carried over the theme of "knowing how to take care of your friend on a bad day" from the prompt rather than milkshakes and crazy straws, hope it's okay!

***

The thing about vacations is that you get too much free time.

Not that Tetsurou particularly enjoys school or homework, but it’s a distraction that he’s forced to deal with, even when he doesn’t want to. Left to his own devices, that’s when the trouble starts.

He’s in bed, curled up with his blanket pulled over his entire body. He has no idea what time it is, but he ate two pieces of toast for breakfast and he’s not hungry yet, so. He has that going for him, at least.

His bedroom door opens. Both his parents are at work, so he’s not at all surprised to hear Kenma’s voice saying, “Everyone’s texting me because you’re not replying to their messages.”

“My phone’s off,” Tetsurou says, which is a true statement, but not the answer Kenma was looking for.

He’s a pretty shitty captain to be missing volleyball practice, but they had yesterday off to give their bodies a break and Tetsurou spent the day at home alone. Somewhere in between bites of reheated leftovers for dinner and a commercial for dog food playing on TV, Tetsurou was hit with a sucker punch of loneliness.

He considered calling Kenma, or even going over since he was right next door, but Kenma likes to go full hermit on days off and play video games and not talk to anyone while he recharges his social interaction battery. He’s said that Tetsurou is an exception and being around him doesn’t usually wear him out, but Tetsurou still tries to give him his space when he can.

It’s not because he’s worried that otherwise he’ll finally annoy Kenma into revoking their friendship or anything. Not at all.

Only, maybe a little bit. Just sometimes.

Not most days. Just some days. Like last night.

And then he considered calling Bokuto or Yaku, but by that point the very idea of moving his jaw and tongue and talking and even thinking of words to say felt like too great a task, and that was when he knew he was screwed.

He knows what he’s supposed to do in these situations: go out anyway, call his friends anyway, get up and move around anyway, don’t just sit there with half-eaten food that’s suddenly lost all its taste.

He knew what he was supposed to do last night, but instead he did this: he put his leftovers back in the fridge, he turned off the TV because even with the volume on low it was too loud, and then he went to bed even though it was hours before he usually slept.

He didn’t feel any better when he woke up this morning. He already knew it, anyway. It was just going to be one of those days, the kind of day where you feel stuck in your own body, and time moves around you rather than with you, and so hours pass and you haven’t moved and have only formed half a thought that you should really do something about this.

Sometimes all you can do is ride these days out, so Tetsurou ate two pieces of toast for breakfast, turned off his phone when texts started rolling in asking why he wasn’t at practice yet, buried himself under his blanket, and waited.

He’d half-hoped that Kenma would show up because he misses him, which is stupid, because he just saw him two days ago, but now that he’s here, Tetsurou doesn’t know what to say.

The door clicks shut, and Kenma’s voice gets closer. “I volunteered to check on you.”

Took the opportunity to ditch practice, more like, is what Tetsurou would say, teasingly, if conversation didn’t feel like a pointless exercise right now.

Kenma sighs softly. “What do you want me to do?”

Tetsurou makes the vocal equivalent of a shrug and draws his blanket tighter around himself.

“Do you want to talk?”

“No.”

“Do you want me to leave?”

“No.”

The bed dips as Kenma sits down. “I don’t know which end is your butt and which is your head,” he says, and his hand drops on top of the blanket, somewhere around Tetsurou’s middle.

Tetsurou squirms and pops his head out of the blanket. His hair is even messier than usual, probably, and his eyelids feel heavy, and he doesn’t remember how to use his facial muscles to make expressions. Kenma looks as he always does, eyes passive as he moves his hand up to pet Tetsurou’s hair, but there’s a slight tightness to his lips.

“If you don’t wanna do anything, I brought my Switch,” Kenma says. “Want me to hook it up to the TV?”

Tetsurou blinks.

“I’m going to hook it up to the TV.”

“Okay,” Tetsurou says.

Kenma gets up from the bed and goes to where he knows Tetsurou keeps a spare HDMI cable in his desk. While he sets up the gaming console, Tetsurou reaches for his phone and turns it on.

He drops it again when he sees the number of unread messages.

So that was a bad idea.

Kenma sits back down on the bed. “You want the volume off or on?”

Instead of answering, Tetsurou pushes his face into Kenma’s thigh and breathes in. Kenma doesn’t really smell like anything in particular, but he’s warm and the closeness is comforting.

He rolls back over so he can face the TV monitor. “Doesn’t matter.”

Kenma leaves the sound on, and Tetsurou watches him play.

He’s known this, but watching Kenma play video games is the best kind of distraction. Because he can’t focus on a book or a movie, but it’s okay if he zones in and out while Kenma farms ingredients for gear upgrades in Breath of the Wild. And watching him run around in-game and listening to the background music and combat sounds is enough to distract him from really thinking about anything.

The hours spent like this don’t make him feel as bad as the hours passed by himself staring at the wall, even though he’s effectively doing nothing either way. Kenma knows this, too. That’s why he came over and brought his game and put it on the monitor even though he likes playing handheld better.

“You’re my best friend,” Tetsurou says, because he’s trying to show his appreciation more instead of asking, You don’t hate me, right?

“You’re mine, too,” Kenma says without missing a beat, and Tetsurou is so, so glad he has someone like him in his life.

Everyone thinks he and Kenma are really different people, and maybe they are in a lot of ways, but the thing is, they get each other. They fill in each other’s quiet, not with noise, but with something softer. Tetsurou’s the only exception when Kenma wants to be alone, and Kenma’s the only one who gets to see Tetsurou when he feels so painfully empty.

At least a couple hours pass without any words exchanged. In an incredible display of patience, Kenma spends at least one of those hours repeatedly bowling using a giant snowball to make in-game money. It must be the same sort of patience he needs to put up with Tetsurou on these sorts of days.

“Do you want to help me clear some shrines?” Kenma asks eventually, referring to the game’s numerous optional puzzle levels.

Tetsurou knows Kenma doesn’t need help just as well as Kenma knows Tetsurou loves solving puzzles.

He sits up, groaning as he stretches out his stiff limbs.

“Sure,” he says. He leans into Kenma’s side, solid and steady. “Let’s do it.”

I first watched YoI with my parrner when we were long-distance - now twe've been living together for a little over a year and I look at the home we're building together and THIS IS HOW IT FEELS. ((Plus I brought blue sheets into this relationship while my partner beought pink so MOOD.))
PRAYER HANDS EMOJI u have blessed us all with this

Me?? Get carried away drawing RinHaru??? Yes. Always. I think one of my fav things is when they're apart and they're both looking out at the ocean like when bby Rin was in Australia ;o; ((Also there was supposed to be a Companion piece for this bc I was gonna be Super Extra, but I decided not to do the second half so I could put more into this one. I'll put the sketch as a reply tho!))

The second half sketch as promised! Also, the necklace thing was supposed to be like ~stones they found on the beach~ as a reference to the song lyrics haha So they're both holding their ~special necklace~ and looking out at the sea thinking of each other at the same time ;u;

The sun lingered on the horizon, a blazing last moment of honeyed rays before nightfall, and sakura petals wafted in the wind. If he thought really hard, Keiji could probably have concocted a scenario that smacked even more of shoujo manga, but he had to admit that he didn’t hate it.

After all, when the guy holding your hand had arm muscles that looked like he could bench press a bus into outer space, it was difficult to find anything less than idyllic.

That feeling had a way of rapidly fleeing for cover when Koutarou opened his mouth, but damn it if it wasn’t still charming as hell. “The sunset looks so awesome!” Koutarou proclaimed. “Let’s take a selfie with it.”

“Sure.” Keiji chortled. “I always wanted a snapshot of a big orange blob with vague outlines of what might look like people in it.”

They took the pictures and Keiji was right, but the engagement on Koutarou’s face as he sought the perfect angle to capture a perfect memory was worth it. There were never the grand gestures he had almost dreaded when he accepted Koutarou’s proposal, but rather smaller ones that scraped at the edge of insanity but always seemed to come out on the other end whole and vivid and everything Keiji never knew he wanted until then.

Life was funny like that.

Resuming their stroll in the general direction of their apartment, not in any particular hurry to return, Keiji let the warmth of the evening and the strength of the man beside him soak in.

He wasn’t prepared at all to have his arm nearly separated from his shoulder when Koutarou made a brisk and abrupt detour to a nearby convenience store, dragging Keiji behind him. “We have drinks at home. You’ll live until we get there.”

Koutarou stopped in his tracks and rolled his eyes. “Nah, I know that. I wanna look at those.” He pointed over toward a stand of vending machines, full of colorful sugary treats and cheap plastic toys that always seemed to disappear into the aether the first moment they were out of sight.

“You shouldn’t have that much sugar before bed, Koutarou. You know how antsy it makes you when you’re trying to lie still.”

Beside him, Koutarou waggled his eyebrows. “I guess you’re just gonna have to wear me out.”

Keiji snorted but didn’t say no to the idea. Honestly, there were far worse ways to seek exhaustion.

Approaching one of the machines that contained brightly colored bubble gum balls, Koutarou fished out a coin from his pocket and stuck it in the slot. “I’m so gonna get a red one.” He turned the knob, and the gumball clattered down into the trap. Koutarou opened the metal flap and whined, “Green is so gross!”

The petulant pout on Koutarou’s face made Keiji chuckle. “Well, you only had a one and six chance of getting red. You can’t predict which one you get, no matter how much you want to.”

“Says who?” Koutarou stuck his tongue out and glared at the green gumball trapped between his forefinger and thumb.

Shaking his head, Keiji reached into his own pocket and retrieved another coin. “We’ll try one more time. Until then —” He leaned forward and fastened his mouth around the gumball and dragged his teeth along the pad of Koutarou’s finger as he pulled back. “— I love green.”

Koutarou shivered, and Keiji smirked as he paid for one more gumball, triumphant when he held up that gleaming red prize. “Looks like it’s your lucky night.”

However, when he met Koutarou’s gaze, it was trained solely on him and didn’t divert at all toward the gumball he had wanted so badly. “Yeah, it is.”

Keiji held up the gumball and pressed it to Koutarou’s lips, enjoying his previous movements being reciprocated complete with that smoky gaze that meant they were probably both going to bed later than they’d planned.

Hand in hand, they continued their journey home, albeit with a bit more of a purposeful stride. They did have business to take care of, after all.
