New couple gets ready for hypersleep!
***
Yuuri was staring down at his hypersleep chamber. He wore a light cotton bathrobe with underwear and a t-shirt underneath, and his glasses. They were alone, finally, except for the ship’s synthetic, Phichit 8, but he was on the bridge running a last minute check. The rest of the crew were already in hypersleep.
A warm hand on his shoulder. He sighed and leaned back as Victor slipped his arms around his waist.
“You okay?”
“Yes, just a little worried.” He turned to look at Victor. “We only just started last night and now we have to sleep for 18 months.”
Victor kissed his ear. “Are you worried that I might forget you?”
Yuuri frowned. “Maybe. You might wake up and not remember that we were…together last night.”
“I doubt that will happen.”
“You can be forgetful sometimes, Captain.”
Victor laughed. “Forget that we spent all night making love and that we barely slept? I don’t think so.” He gave Yuuri a little squeeze. “If I do forget, you’ll just have to remind me when we wake up, like you remind of everything else, Mr. First Officer.”
Yuuri relaxed as Victor fell silent. He’d spent years trying to get assigned to this ship and this captain. Victor was a legend already even though he was still young, having gotten his first command only a year out of the Academy. Yet, he could be a little forgetful, even distracted at times, never about anything related to the ship, the crew, or his command, but about random personal things. Yuuri had realized this aspect about him right away and took it upon himself to remind Victor, usually discreetly, about things like other crew members’ birthdays or things he’d promised someone else.
He’d practically worshipped Victor, though he was often teased by the other crew members about their first meeting at a raucous party where he became so drunk that he couldn’t remember it. Only photos and video showed the now legendary dance off he’d challenged everyone to, in his underwear.
“You look cute in those glasses.” Victor turned him and Yuuri slipped his arms around his neck. The kiss was gentle, a contrast to the deep hungry kisses from a few hours before.
“Excuse me, Captain.”
Victor pulled back from Yuuri’s lips. “Yes, Phichit,” he said without looking at him. Yuuri stared into Victor’s blue-green eyes, aware that they were being rude to the synthetic.
“It’s time for both of you to go into hypersleep now. We can’t delay any longer.” Phichit’s voice was cheerful.
Victor disengaged himself from Yuuri’s embrace. “Thank you for keeping to the schedule.”
Phichit was smiling warmly at both of them. “I’ll watch over you and the ship while you sleep and when you wake up, you’ll be home!” He moved to Yuuri’s hypersleep chamber.
“Phichit, I know it’s protocol for the captain to go under last but do you mind if I went last instead?” Yuuri looked at his captain. “Is that all right?”
Victor smiled. “Of course.” Yuuri watched, arms folded, while Phichit got his captain ready to sleep. Just before he sealed Victor into the chamber, Yuuri leaned down for one last kiss. “I will see you when we wake up,” whispered Victor.
When he was sealed in, Victor smiled at him while Phichit started the turndown process. “Sweet dreams, love,” he said. Yuuri watched while the captain’s eyes fluttered closed. He stood back, wiping a tear away.
“He’ll be fine, Yuuri.” Phichit said turning to him. He’d adopted a more casual tone of voice.
He had spend four weeks awake with Phichit while the rest of the crew had slept as part of his onboarding when he was first assigned. He’d treated Phichit like he treated everyone and now considered him a good friend even if he was a synthetic. Phichit, for his part, had been programmed to be more emotional and friendly. During his first formal meeting with his captain, Victor had asked him to be friendly towards Phichit so they could test out his programming.
“I know. I just…he’s so forgetful about human things sometimes.” Yuuri closed his eyes for a moment. “I don’t think I can bear it if he wakes up and doesn’t remember that we were together.”
“He might forget but I doubt it. The captain remembers everything that’s important.” Phichit reached out tentatively then patted him on the arm. Yuuri’s smile was soft, gently touching the glass of Victor’s hypersleep tube. “I don’t know how it happened. One day I was working like normal and then he asked me something mundane on the bridge and I looked up to answer, and I couldn’t stop looking at him. I realized at that moment that he was everything to me, and would always be.”
Phichit smiled. Yuuri turned to him. “Hey, come here.” He opened his arms for a hug. “Thank you for being such a good friend and for listening to me go on about him all the time.”
“It’s…what friends are for,” said Phichit against his ear. “Now it’s time to sleep, Yuuri.”
“Okay.” Yuuri removed his robe and glasses and slid into the hypersleep chamber. Phichit gave his hand a little squeeze and sealed him in. As the turndown started, Yuuri smiled. No matter what happened when they woke up, he would make sure Victor remembered that he loved him.
