I can never pass up MiyuNabe! Sobs

***

As a draftee for the Hiroshima Toyo Carps, Miyuki received an invitation to come and see a home game and tour the stadium as well. They were generous enough to provide two tickets and travel accommodations for him and his guest.

He debated about who to ask to come along but he knew in his heart there was only one person he truly wanted to invite and that was Nabe. Miyuki and Nabe had grown extremely close over their senior year. His duties as captain had kept him insanely busy, and he longed for a chance to spend some free time with Nabe even though opportunities were few and far between.

Nabe looked flustered at the invite. “Surely you’d rather take Kuramochi or Sawamura – or – even your father,” he’d stammered.

Miyuki shook his head. “I’d like you to come with me,” he said with a shy smile.

On the day of the game they took the train to Hiroshima, excitedly chatting and watching the scenery pass from the bullet train window. When they arrived at the stadium they laughed at the mascot slyly dancing around with small children and made their way to their seats.

They had a perfect view of the field – so close they could smell the freshly cut grass. The Carps took their place on the field in their red and white uniforms. Miyuki couldn’t help but thrill at the thought that soon he would wear one as well. He knew it was sure to be a close game against the Nippon Ham team and he wanted to get a good look at possible future opponents.

As the game progressed they analyzed every pitch, and every move made by the fielders and batters. They got more excited as the innings flew by, debating strategy with each other and trying to guess what pitch would come next. After all this time, Miyuki was still blown away by Nabe’s baseball sense. He felt a tug in his heart reminding him how much he would miss these conversations when he was here and Nabe was attending Tokyo University.

Around the fifth inning Miyuki’s stomach had begun to rumble – and the smells coming from the tray of a passing food vendor were too tantalizing to resist. He turned to Nabe, and caught an expression that he’d never expected. Nabe was looking at him with a soft smile and eyes… eyes that held adoration.

The sight shook him to his core. Miyuki knew how he felt but had no clue as to Nabe’s feelings. He tried to fight the heat rising in his face at the thought but of course he was completely unsuccessful.

“W-want something from the vendor? My treat.” He was finally able to get out the question he’d planned to ask.

Nabe was blushing as well, it was evident he knew he’d been caught staring. “Sure” he said, dropping his gaze to look at the concrete stands.

The rest of the game passed in somewhat awkward silence. The team recruiter came up to them afterward and took them on a tour of the stadium and by then it was evening. They had a somewhat subdued dinner, neither wanting to address the elephant in the room.

With about a twenty minute wait before their train departed for the ride back to Tokyo, they walked over to a park near the restaurant. It had a fountain that was lit up with seating areas around it. Miyuki motioned his head towards a bench. “Let’s hang out here a bit,” he said as he sat down.

Nabe joined him, purposely looking in every direction but his.

Miyuki gazed up at the sky. “I don’t want tonight to end,” he finally said. He risked a glanced over at Nabe who looked shocked at first.

Then a smile more brilliant than the lit fountain crossed Nabe’s features. “Me neither,” he grinned.
