In a sick twist of fate, the Karasuno Boys’ Volleyball Club bus refuses to start the day before they leave for the summer training camp in Tokyo. Takeda-sensei says everything is fine and they can simply borrow one of the other school buses, smaller than theirs but can fit most of the team.
The key word is most.
After becoming nationally ranked, the volume of applications for the volleyball team has grown exponentially meaning lots of new members and much less space on the bus. This is how Kei, one of the few third years with his driver’s license, finds himself sharing his car with the first third years who volunteered to give up their seats to their kouhai.
On the first hour of the drive, Hinata and Kageyama obliterate the bag of snacks Kei tossed their way at the start in the hope it would distract them for the entire duration. In the second, they’re bickering about which brand of athletic socks are the best and take out their own pairs from their bags to compare. By the third, they’re dead asleep.
Kei wonders how it took them this long when they’ve been driving in the middle of the night. Then he remembers that the prospect of playing against Tokyo’s top-ranked schools is a headier stimulant for those two than the can of coffee Kei sips at during the drive. That makes him think about Hinata on caffeine which is an amusing enough image to make him snort before muffling a yawn into his hand.
The rear lights of the bus ahead of him are two red flares burned into his eyelids when he blinks. The current time says 3:37AM, and Tokyo still feels so far away. He hopes the rest of the team doesn’t mind him dropping face first into a futon when they arrive because there’s no way he’s blocking any spikes after this.
“Wanna switch?”
He blinks.
Kageyama is awake in the backseat, sleepy eyes watching him through the rearview mirror.
Kei raises an eyebrow. “You were asleep a second ago.”
Kageyama shrugs. “Now I’m not.” He yawns.
“Do you even have your license?”
“I got it a couple weeks ago.”
“Really?” Kei can’t help the disbelief in his voice. Kageyama barely sets aside time to do homework let alone practice anything other than volleyball.
“Parents made me.” Kageyama digs in his bag, brows furrowed as he searches for something. His face lights up when he finds a protein bar. He takes a bite then says, “So I can drive if you’re tired.”
Kei narrows his eyes. “How do I know you’re any good?”
Kageyama scowls. “Come on, I’m not gonna crash your car, there’s no way I’m missing the training camp.”
Figures that’s a more pressing issue for Kageyama than the possibility of ruining Kei’s car, even if it’s just a hand me down from Akiteru.
He taps a finger against the steering wheel, glancing at the time again. He really is tired.
He sighs. “Fine. Text the others that we’re switching.” He takes the next exit and pulls into a gas station.
When Kageyama takes the driver’s seat, Kei watches warily from the back. But at this hour, the road is nearly empty and it would be a feat great enough for Kei to actually compliment if Kageyama managed to hit something.
Sleep pulls at him more insistently than before, so instead of keeping watch Kei just lets himself trust, leans his head against the cool glass of the window, and closes his eyes.
When he wakes, Kageyama and Hinata are yelling.
“Oi, that car wasn’t black, it was gray!”
“It was totally black!”
“Was not!”
“Oh look, another one!” Hinata punches Kageyama in the arm.
“Ow! Why you—” Kageyama swipes at Hinata’s head with one hand but Hinata backs away laughing, pressing himself up against the passenger side door.
“What are you doing?” Kei says flatly, rubbing his eye.
“We’re playing a game!” Hinata properly settles back in his seat after Kageyama grumbles and returns his hand to the steering wheel. “I get to punch Kageyama for every black car we see.”
“And I get to punch him for every white one,” Kageyama mutters. “So you better tell me if you see any.”
“Why did you pick black when every dark car is going to look black in this light? Besides, I’m not helping you bludgeon each other.” Kei looks at his phone to check the time. 4:31AM, meaning he slept for about an hour.
“You should pick a color too, Tsukishima.” Hinata turns to look at Kei over his seat.
“White car.” Kageyama’s fist shoots out lightning quick, straight into Hinata’s shoulder.
“Ouch! Dammit, Kageyama!”
“Orange,” Kei says tiredly, reaching blindly for his water bottle somewhere on the seat next to him.
“Eh? Orange?” Hinata pouts. “Cheater, we never see orange cars.”
“Exactly.”
Finally, he finds his water bottle. As he opens it and takes a drink, something lands on his lap. He looks down and sees a protein bar.
“You should eat something,” Hinata says, looking at Kei again over his seat. “It’s been hours and you’ve been driving most of the time. Plus you’re so tall you must get super hungry.”
“That doesn’t explain your own freakish appetite,” Kei says, an instinctual quip that leaves his lips lightly, easily. Two years ago Hinata might have bristled and shot something back, but now he just grins and goes back to watching the road closely for black cars. Kei wonders why they ate all the snacks he gave them when they had their own food to begin with. Then his stomach grumbles a little, and he tears open the wrapper and takes a bite in lieu of saying something like thanks.
His phone buzzes with a text from Yamaguchi, the only third year left in charge of the kouhai along with Yachi on the bus. It says: r u ok/has kageyama driven u off a cliff yet?
Kei glances out the window. Trees speed past in a green blur, lush mountains on one side and the distant skyline of a passing city on the other. Kageyama rounds a curve on the highway, eyes focused and clear despite the hour, and he argues with Hinata about whether a passing car is blue or black.
The sun rises in the distance, just a thin yellow slit emerging over the tops of the buildings, slowly illuminating the dawn sky.
Kei has to admit he doesn’t feel as tired as he did earlier.
Between punches and bites of food and Hinata’s ringing laughter, Kei replies to Yamaguchi: Everything’s okay.
Re: FILL: Team Grandstand, G
why do i love this fic? LET ME COUNT THE WAYS
i love how you said tsukki "tossed [snacks] their way" to distract them like they're a couple of oversized dogs LOL. and then they argue about SOCK BRANDS of all things. these boys. please.
i love tsukki being surprised that kageyama actually took the time to learn how to drive because same, and then kageyama being like "of course i won't crash your car i'm not missing this training camp" like. HIS LOGIC. PLEASE.
i love the little "Kei just lets himself trust" because uhhhh these three ruin me ok even though it's such a small thing ANYTHING ABOUT THESE THREE RUINS ME
i love kageyama and hinata's stupid game and kageyama picking black and then arguing whether a car is black or if it's grey or blue and tsukki's like Why. and then he picks orange because he's a spoilsport but he's my favorite spoilsport
i love hinata making sure tsukki eats and tsukki appreciating it even if he doesn't say it, I LOVE YAMAGUCHI BEING LIKE "has kageyama drive u off a cliff yet" DJHSKDG NO ONE HAS FAITH IN HIM
I LOVE THE LAST LINE!!!! WHY DO I LOVE IT SO MUCH??? I DON'T KNOW! but this fic is so softé and tsukishima&hinata&kageyama are my best boys and reading this made me happy!!! thank you, you amazing person

When summer hit Tsukishima, he felt left over by the entire world. The cars were all running as if they were racing and the street people were walking with haste. Each time he had to talk to someone, their words spilled, out of control they were tides carrying him out of the conversation. Still it didn’t bother him that much, he would go at this once pace, as always. But some ball of sunshine who knew about it thought they had to do something.
[10:40] hinata : hey let’s go on a trip next week !! you are all free right ?
[10:42] swaggeyama : u should focus on work dumbass
[12:45] tsukki : And you’re going to drive ?
[12:49] hinata : noo, you will !
[12:50] tsukki : I didn’t say yes yet.
Tsukishima sighted, knowing that he already surrendered. In the end, he was longing to see them too, after all these years. Yachi genuinely called it a “bonding anew trip”. Even though Tsukishima was not fully convinced by the name, he may be able to start over.
Music playing loudly and people yelling along, they said this was the spirit of road trips. Heat haze ahead and all windows down, three friends were enjoying their summer vacation like never, or so.
- Where are we going today ?
- Straight to the end road Yachi ! affirmed Hinata.
It’s easy to say when you’re not the one driving. Stupid Hinata was smiling even brighter as an answer and Yachi did the same. The sun was perfectly positioned to throw its deadly rays on the wheel and Tsukishima’s pale skin. By the end of the day, he would look funny with tan only on his fingers.
Hinata’s awful singing blended with Yachi’s sweet notes and Tsukishima’s less enthusiastic tone was giving every song a fresh cover that would undoubtedly sell better than the original. The more he heard their voices, the more he saw their faces, he realized how much he loved them. They had no idea where they were going so they couldn’t feel more free.
When Yachi opened her eyes, the landscape was not running at hundred of kilometers fast anymore. The dusty red moutains were incredibly still. Laying on the backseats, she couldn’t see Tsukishima nor Hinata in the front, yet their voices reached her.
All her muscles were stiff from sleeping so much in the car. It would be nice to stand up a bit but it would break the momentum. She tried to figure out what they were talking about. A lot of “sorry” were uttered, paired with “high school years” and “errors”. Yachi wanted to know about the situation so badly. She hated herself for being overly curious. The car’s front doors opened and slammed on the same beat.
- Give me another chance, please, whispered Hinata.
- That’s unfair for Yachi. Look, she’s sleeping.
She faked.
- She won’t know it.
- She will if you keep talking so loud. That’s so out of you to talk like that.
Tsukishima was confused. There was no way he could understand why Hinata’s caramel eyes looked so desperate. Or rather, he knew too well so he couldn’t accept it. On the last kilometers of the day, Tsukishima locked his eyes on the everlasting concrete road. It was a constant reminder that he came to move on, not to walk the wrong paths again.
Eventually the car ran out of fuel. Tsukishima miscalculating was not something they could see everyday. Stuck in surprise, he kept repeating to himself that it was not possible. He was absolutely sure they would have enough to reach the next city.
Waving hands on this treeless road so people would notice their distress was less of a burden with the bracing wind by their side. The few drivers they came across barely paid attention at them. Far in the horizon, the sun quit his job throwing a last golden ray on the clouds.
- Guess we have to pull this.
When the night fell they saw a motel, far away but they saw its glorious neon lights. Their respective shadows gradually stretched with car fire coming to meet them for the first time. The light was suddenly so intense, Tsukishima was blinded when he turned back.
- Yachi stay behind us, warned Tsukishima.
Her moisty hand was gently hold by Hinata’s, not a lot more confident. With the fire still on, she could barely see the lone driver, and backseats with stuff piled to the top. They were staring right at her. When she noticed she grabbed Hinata’s hand tightly, trying her best not to shiver. The driver finally got out after endless minutes listening to his engine grumbling.
- Do ya need help guys ? they yelled with a friendly voice.
At first glance, they didn’t look as suspicious as the boys thought. Hinata answered positively and carefully observed him approach them. Walking up to conversation distance he dived forward toward Hinata. A knife. Tsukishima saw the knife he handled, glowing with lights’ reflections. They were going to kill them with that hand knife. If he didn’t move now Hinata will get stabbed by this fucking knife. Move legs ! He can reach them. He can pull them away. They can handle the situation. He deeply wish they did.
Eventually daylight hit the open wounds. Crimson trails were drawn on the concrete road. Not hearing a simple complaint nor seeing any expression on their face, Tsukishima realized how much Yachi and Hinata missed him. Without the wind of carefreeness blasting, fighting against dizziness, waiting on the side road for someone to notice them was closer to hell than any other experience Tsukishima had to go through until now.
