Shinsuke had excused himself to the garden at the earliest time possible. He stepped out, the guard closing the door behind him and muffling the noises of the party in full swing. Once he was alone, he let his posture slip and started taking in long, deep breaths, hand on his chest.
He had been aware of how much pressure Social season would be, but he had not been prepared to be named the diamond of the season by His Majesty Tooru. He had practised a lot for his presentation to the King Consort but only compelled by his duty towards his family’s small yet noble lineage. They had barely been granted the privilege to be introduced, seeing as how insignificant the Kita viscountcy was. Their respectability lied in their purity and good reputation, in equal parts due to their honourability and their famous high-quality rice. Therefore, as the sole child to Viscount Kita, the responsibility to carry on their bloodline and heritage fell unto him, and being unable to inherit, since he was an Omega, he should at least carry himself and choose a suitable partner befitting of the family.
He also knew the next heir. His cousin, Ushijima Wakatoshi was a respectable Alpha, whose only fault was to have courted the person who now reigned over the country alongside King Hajime. Ha was very capable, and Shinsuke trusted him with the land and its people, only hoping the King wouldn’t hold him accountable for that.
He took in one last breath. So far, the season was going well. Better than he had imagined. The Royal Ball was magnificent which had to be expected considering it was the Royal family and the first one His Majesty Tooru would plan after ascending the Throne after his Marriage at the end of the last season. He had tried to take advantage of his new title to get to know as many nobles as possible but he could only fake smiles and interest for so long, and the list of those who wished to get to know him was almost as long as the guest list.
He opened his eyes, sharp and focused. He knew exactly what he was looking for. The life that he wanted. He wasn’t so naive as to believe he would fall in love at first sight with a beautiful noble and get swept off his feet, the story ending with a fairy tale love marriage. No, this had to be reserved to people more important and beautiful. Like their Majesties. Only a fool would miss the pure adoration in their eyes when they looked at each other. Shinsuke only wished to find a suitable match. Someone equally respectable, with a decent wealth to have and raise one or two children with and live comfortably with for the rest of his life. He would find it. He knew he would. But he wasn’t used to the constant stress, and it was taking a toll on him.
Rustling in the bushes made him turn his head towards the noise. He believed he was outside on his own but he couldn’t be sure of it. After all, the gardens were huge, and it was entirely possible that the garden he was in was connected to another part of the Palace. He made sure to stay under the lights, visible from the inside by everyone and especially by the guard. He wasn’t fearing an attack on his person, he trusted the security under the Royal knights but he couldn’t risk people questioning his chastity.
He cleared his throat.
“Hello? Is someone here?”
Some bushes moved again before parting and revealing a tall dark man.
“Hello. I’m very sorry if I frightened you. It wasn’t my intention. I went to the outer garden to get some fresh air. I wasn’t expecting anyone to be outside this early so I wasn’t paying attention.”
The man had walked close enough to be lit by the lights and his handsome features took Shinsuke’s hard acquired breath away. He was quite simply mesmerised by the glow of his dark skin, the bronze, even golden reflection on his face, the kindest eyes and sweetest smile he had ever seen. He also, from the corner of his eye, noticed that he kept a neat haircut and clean attire that flattered his build.
Suddenly remembering his formal upbringing, he respectfully bowed.
“Forgive my manners, my Lord. I am Sir Shinsuke, son to Viscount Kita.”
He looked back just in time to appreciate the man’s form as he leaned forward and executed a perfect bow.
“The fault lies in me, Sir Kita. You needn’t apologise. Lord Ojiro Aran, at your service.”
The marquisat.Ojiro Shinsuke knew of had looked very different from him, and he could only guess that he had inherited his dam’s good looks. Since the marquess had tragically lost his life last year, the family had been excused from social life as they observed the due time for mourning. He also imagined, considering the ill-reputation the late Head had, that his successor should have been quite busy with the succession.
“Are you now allowed to participate in social activities, my Lord?”
“Indeed. Although I still wouldn’t have come if it weren’t for His Majesty’s persistence.”
“Do you not enjoy the entertainment?”
He looked at the big windows inside the party.
“I..”
He cleared his throat and looked back at him with a quiet smile.
“I will admit that I have been dreading the looks of the Tone. I am not used to high society although I have been taught to speak and act like I belong there, and I am not looking forward to the gossip that my presence will leave behind.”
Shinsuke nodded.
“I see… Well you must feel relieved then. That the Kings are on your side.”
He clarified when the young Marquess threw him a confused look.
“Ah. Yes, it would have been foolish not to take the opportunity. I cannot run from Society anymore after all.”
“And yet, you’re outside in the company of a stranger, telling them your deepest secrets. Maybe you’re not ready for the Tone at all.”
The Lord’s eyes gleamed gently under the lights.
“Oh, that I am not. However, I must protest your other claim. While it’s true that we haven’t known each other for long, I do not feel like you’re a stranger. In fact, if you’ll forgive my forwardness, I must tell you that I feel a deep kinship with you, Sir Shinsuke.”
Shinsuke froze in place. But not from awkwardness or uncomfortableness. He felt very much comfortable. Safe and warm, and seen. He really didn’t know how to describe it in any other way. When Lord Aran looked into his eyes, it felt like he was staring at his soul, at his essence, his true self if you will. It felt so intimate, in a way he had never experienced even whilst he danced away with his suitors.
And right. In fact, every second in the Lord’s presence felt right. It was as if he was exactly where he was always supposed to be. Where he belonged. And the verbal confirmation from the Alpha that the feeling was mutual almost drew a purr out of him. All the hours of lessons on how to secure a match flew out of his head. He knew he wasn’t supposed to decide so early on or too seem too eager.
He couldn’t find it in himself to care for it over the possibility of happiness that was facing him.
