““I wish you could have retrieved him alive” is what you’re thinking.” Sugawara took a deep voice to do a poor impression of Ushijima-san. “Or you hoped we’d retrieved the brain undamaged, something along the lines.”

Ushijima stayed silent, the guess was right. Sugawara didn’t even bother to ask, he knew, after all he was the one in charge of providing the “valuable material” to him all this time.

This part of his analyst job was never mentioned in the description. Anybody would freak out having to prepare bare brains for decades-long storage. Anybody would freak out knowing Sugawara tried to recreate Daichi’s, and despite the failed attempts and impossible nature of the task, the hideous remnants of the inspector were still somewhere in the building.

As soon as the cleaners collected them, Sugawara made sure they were safe, in his hands, perfectly preserved in a glass cube full of formalin. They were definitely not resting where they should be, not beside his family, not along the home crafted shrine Terushima did for Daichi.

“How is it going with... that?”
Sugawara didn’t stop sipping his tea, keeping the shiver down his spine for himself.

Ushijima confirmed he knew about his shenanigans. If he knew, then he could have shut his subordinate down right here and now if he didn’t approve. Sugawara calmed down. He wasn’t fired (yet), so he should be able to get out of this conversation just fine.

In fact, the chief was quite enthusiastic. If these oh so useful brains could be reconstructed and ready to use even after a Dominator scattered them, the harvesting process would be much easier.

“Nowhere, obviously. Even I know how pointless it is.” It was laughable. Sugawara cracked a smile at his pathetic self. “It’s not like the soul would come back if we put the brain back y’know.”

“Indeed.”

It was a pity Miya couldn’t join the system but there will be plenty of occasions in the future. Overall, it was not even a big loss for Sibyl.

“I can never look Ushijima-san in the eyes. Damn scary. Don’t know how you can spend hours with him Suga-chan”
“I guess we have more in common than I thought.”

Terushima took a bite in a rose-flavoured cookie. It was oddly refreshing yet he didn’t quite like the lingering taste of it. He was pretty sure he had this exact reaction last week when Sugawara brought the same snacks but it would be a shame not to eat something exposed unprotected like this, especially when their analyst is so stingy when it came to food. Considering there were only 3 left, Oikawa must have stopped by before him.

“Are you coming Saturday? We’ll be drinking to old friends.”
Meaning Asahi, Daichi, Akaashi, Yaku, Saeko, among others.

“Yes sure, it’s been a while.”

“I’m still mad the cleaners couldn’t find Daichi’s remains. They just… throw away everything like it’s nothing, is that even legal?”

“Go ask Ushijima-san.”

Terushima grinned in displeasure.
“I’m never going to meet him on my own will.”

“You should have picked them up on the scene then.”

“Suga-chan, you’re impossible.”
Terushima chuckled, at his friend’s relief.

Division 1 didn’t half-assed the bar aspect of this party, nor did they order cheap take away food. Daishou must have found a roundabout way to put everything on the Bureau’s receipt under “business expenses”. That would help him rack up some “good coworker” points.
As soon as Sugawara stepped in the Enforcer’s shared living room, they offered him a beer, and urged him to try those wonderful mini-sandwiches. He wasn’t surprised this felt less like a commemorative gathering and more like a casual drinking night (fancy edition). From the merry looks of his friends, it seemed that he missed the first, more formal, part of this celebration, with the emotional speeches.

The old friends shrine didn’t change place. It got bigger, decorated with a lot more flowers and other things these still photos used to enjoy. Terushima noticed Sugawara was fidgeting with something in his lab coat pocket.

“What did you bring? Something nice I bet.”

Sugawara drew a smile. He didn’t plan to give this back, couldn’t let it go, but he felt bad keeping it for himself all this time.

“Oh... I’m only returning something.”

He placed Daichi’s inspector badge beside his portrait.

“Suga-chan.” Terushima’s lips were trembling. ”I thought they destroyed everything!”

“Daichi told me to take care of it before he left. I couldn’t know it was a farewell gift.”

“So he told you?! He told you wha-”

“No, he didn’t. I didn’t know” Sugawara cut, looking down. “I wish I knew.”

Terushima was still trying to paint the whole picture of the events despite Sugawara’s efforts to drive him away.

“If only we knew...” He took a deep inspiration, trying to stop his tears. “Thank you Suga-chan, thank you, really.”

Daichi was beautiful on the framed photo, on his badge. His firm but caring expression was a delight for all the people gathered here.

7.
Of course Sugawara would get emotional seeing him again, what a fool he was for coming here after all he had done.

10.
Seeing his face reminded Sugawara of his limbs floating around in a tank. Not alive, not quite dead. This awful sight was infecting him.

14.
He left immediately.
