As far as first dates go, Youichi’s never been quite so nervous. He would be the first to admit the premise is a tad juvenile, though; having graduated from high school nearly two years ago (his date, nearly three), even Youichi himself gawked at the idea at first. Although after speaking with Haruichi extensively about the potential venue options, they’d mutually come to the conclusion that this was the most reasonable option: affordable enough for a couple of broke college students, within reasonable driving distance of both of their houses, and generally enjoyable.

On second thought, though, Youichi’s not sure if his perception of the date in question’s quality has anything to do with the venue, or the suitor themselves. And that what makes the whole thing so damned funny. If someone told Youichi that the person he’d most looked forward to dating was his pink-haired, perpetually smug-smiling senpai from his stint as a baseball player in high school, he might’ve pinned them to the ground with his expert wrestling moves (which, by the way, have only gotten better since graduation.), or on a day he wasn’t feeling particularly cruel, kicked them squarely in the ass.

Of course, in his high school days, the kick would surely have been followed by a chop to the back. The chopper, none other than the pink-haired, smug-smiling person Youichi’s stomach is turning itself in knots for presently-- a former second baseman named Kominato Ryousuke.

“You want to take me on a date,” Ryousuke had repeated weeks ago, folded arms loosening considerably by the time Youichi had finished his proposal. Their expression, though, did not change in the slightest, prompting Youichi’s heart to race as fast as he remembers it going in high school.

“Yeah. A date,” Youichi had said, heart threatening to jump out of his chest and onto the ground in front of them. Free for Ryousuke to stomp on, light on fire, do anything they wished to, really.

Never in a million years did he expect Ryousuke to take him up on his offer. Nor did he expect them to agree on going to an amusement park and ride the ferris wheel together, like a couple of middle schoolers too consumed in shoujo manga to think of anything less dramatic.

Youichi wants to take everything back-- he’s not sure if anything is going well or not because he hasn’t been able to think for himself since seeing Ryousuke for the first time tonight and thinking damn, I’m on a date with my high school baseball partner.

“I think,” Ryousuke says suddenly, snapping Youichi out of the memories he’d been replaying in his head on loop since the beginning of their date. Their hand finds Youichi’s shoulder, eyes sliding to the side of their cart as it pauses in midair before continuing, “this is where you’re supposed to kiss me.”

Ryousuke looks beautiful, their face shrouded in the dull orange evening light that filters through the windows of their cart. The sun casts feathery shadows down the side of their cheekbones and pool together at the base of their throat. It’s when it crosses Youichi’s mind that Ryousuke puts sunsets to shame that he finds the courage to close the distance between them. Youichi’s fingers find their way onto Ryousuke’s collar and balls up the excess fabric that hangs too loose just below their shoulders.

Youichi's never been so sure of wanting a second date.
