You grew up watching the curve of his back tensing and shifting at every threat on your life. You grew up wishing that you would never stop watching his back broaden and protect you from all the evil in the world, as childish as it might sound. You grew up watching him slip into the perfect and strong knight he has always endeavored to become. He's a pillar of stability in your life, a constant that will never vanish. You're selfish to keep it that way, but does it matter? Does it really matter as long as your desires are the same as his?

“Stop smiling so much, it's creepy,” Hajime grumbles, elbowing you in the side without a care in the world.

Oh, how improper and insulting your relationship appears. A prince shouldn't let his retainers and servants treat him like they're his equal, but Hajime is special in a way others won't ever achieve. He's yours—the one you know will never betray you, even for your father the king.

You are to each other the most important person in the world and nothing can disturb this equilibrium.

“Can't I be happy without reason, Hajime?” you chuckle, giving him your widest grin, all teeth and mirth hidden in your eyes.

He rolls his eyes, which is a natural reaction to everything you do (or don't). He sits next to you on the bench outside the wooden house, gazing at the sky. He isn't really one to admire nature, so you know he has something on his mind. You nudge him.

“What are you thinking about?”

Hajime's gaze is raw; you can without a fail understand what emotion is going through it, and right now you aren't sure you are ready to face it.

“I should be the one asking you that,” he says. “I know you want to tell me something.”

You can't pretend everything is fine when he's looking at you like you're both going to collapse on yourselves.

“It doesn't do you any good to be that smart,” you tease, lips curling in a much more wistful smile. “You are made of muscles to fight.”

“Yeah, to keep your sorry ass out of trouble.”

You laugh at his lack of tact—words have never been his weapon, unlike you.

“I'm sorry for dragging you all the way here,” you whisper almost inaudibly. “I'm sorry you had to abandon your career in the royal army to follow me in this stupid quest to control my powers.”

If only you were stronger, if only you knew better what to do with your own body and abilities, you would have stayed in the castle and led the life that was already drawn out for you, with Hajime fulfilling his role almost to a fault. You can't affirm where this journey will take you. Your fingers are twitching for a small crackling of fire, a peaceful storm or a resounding thunder, but you don't give in. You keep your hands firmly pressed on your knees.

Hajime sighs loudly, running a hand on his neck. “You know that I pledged to you, not to your father or anyone else.”

He then places both his hands on yours, comforting and warm, and you remember why you love him so much.

“There's nothing to forgive, idiot.”
