Kazuya stares down at the notification on his phone.
1 Missed Call & 1 New Voicemail from Kuramochi Youchi Friday 21:32
Missed calls from Kuramochi aren’t anything new, considering Kazuya has a bad habit of leaving his phone on silent, but it’s the timing of the call that’s out of the ordinary. As far as he remembers, Kuramochi is supposed to be out with his own team for some party, and he didn’t expect to hear from him until tomorrow - specifically, by noon and likely hungover.
He slings his practice bag over his shoulder and leaves the locker room, starting the trek back to his dorm. Kazuya’s too curious about the minute long voicemail to wait until he’s home, so he taps the notification and brings the receiver to his ear.
“Hey - ”
They talk all the time, and yet Kazuya’s insides still turn to mush whenever he hears Kuramochi’s voice.
This time around, there’s no mistaking that his words are a little slurred, “ - I know you’re still at practice or you’ve got your phone on silent - you really need to stop doing that by the way, at least have it on vibrate or something - but I just wanted - oi!” The chatter in the background gets louder, closer, and it sounds like Kuramochi starts fending off a couple of rowdy upperclassmen from his team.
Kazuya smiles as he walks, because despite being drunk and in the middle of leaving a voicemail, Kuramochi still tries to respectfully excuse himself from the chaos and nosy senpai.
“I wanted to see if you would pick-up…” Kuramochi continues on when the party is now a quiet lull, “because I wanted to hear your voice or hell, listen to you laugh at me for drunk calling you but I wouldn’t care ...Hey, Kazuya - ” And that’s when Kazuya’s heart jumps, because Kuramochi calls his name in a voice that’s soft and warm and reserved just for him. “ - I love you, ya’ know that?”
He’s almost relieved to have missed Kuramochi’s call. It’s not like Kuramochi never tells him he loves him, but Kazuya is rendered speechless every time, still has difficulty saying it back without stumbling over his words; though Kuramochi is always patient, says it anyway, even when he’s drunk and three prefectures away.
“Shit, I miss you,” Kuramochi makes a frustrated whine that’s all too endearing.
Kazuya really misses him, too.
“I bet you’re gonna laugh at me in the morning, huh?” He might, just a little, but Kazuya’s wondering if Kuramochi is even going to be alive in the morning, considering how far gone he sounds. “Look - I better go ‘cause the senpai are gonna give me hell.” Kazuya feels the same disappointment when they have to cut their phone calls short. “Love you,” Is how the message ends, and Kazuya feels warm all over.
His cheeks hurt from smiling when he removes the phone from his ear, saving the voicemail without a second thought. Kazuya plans to hold onto it for a while, but Kuramochi doesn’t need to know that.
