There were no restaurant like this local family business. With less than 10 tables, it was squished between the florist and the bakery. Like many shops here, the owners lived in the second floor, and knew Haiji and Hana. One would say their very positive opinion was biased because of habit, but Haiji truly knew no better barbecue than theirs. A familiar scent of food made with upmost care and skill filled Hana’s hungry lungs.

« Thank you for inviting me ! »

« It’s to celebrate the beginning of your highschool life. »

« And the end of yours ! » cheerfully answered Hana, pulling a slice of beef to her mouth.

From now on Haiji won’t be part of her daily life anymore. The last time they were set apart he graduated from middle school, and the news were too heartbreaking for a ten years old who couldn’t stop crying. Haiji loved this and would tell people about from time to time, only to see Hana’s embarrassed blush.

The shiba was strangely excited at the view of mountains of card boxes. Even though Hana said she came to help, his belongings were obviously too heavy for her. So instead she wandered in the house, Aotake was it ? Given the moist on the wall and the dust at every corner, there was no doubt Haiji would indulge in cleaning this place from top to bottom. From his room, on the first floor, was a splendid view on the owner’s house.

« You came here because of the old man right ? » She was surprisingly well informed. « Dad told me. »

« I want to run again. »

Haiji’s fierce eyes grabbed Hana’s attention. There was no way her vague smile could express how worried she was. Her gaze landed on his injured knee instead, running away from the pressure his stubborn determination conveyed.

« You will », she whispered tenderly. Not even the end of the world would disturb him from his objective, so a high school girl was no match.

Even with the snow intertwining in her hair, covering her scarf, Hana waited politely outside, as all her calls died unanswered. Little footsteps could be spotted here and there in the front yard but the dog was probably resting somewhere warmer.

« May I help you ? »

Melted snowflakes were beading from their dark straight hair to their glasses.

« I came to see Kiyose Haiji. » declared Hana in awe, unaware someone else was actually living here.

« I see, you must be Katsuta-san. Come in, he’s sick. »

They helped her with the bags of vegetables she carried all the way from her family’s shop.

« Haiji-san, your acquaintance is here. » They shouted through the door, after what they eclipsed as mysteriously as they appeared.

If Haiji wasn’t bed stuck, he would have warned Yuki against letting Hana alone in a kitchen. Not that she would hurt herself or set a fire up. The victims were rather the poor ones who would be tricked into tasting her meals. And Haiji knew it was too late when he waited half an hour in front of the toilets. His apologies were only half convincing due to the muffled laughter.

« I settled here because the rant was low. » latter admitted Yuki.

The tea Hana poured was, fortunately, like any others’ tea. Refreshing at first then gradually bitter.

« But Haiji can’t shut up about running the Ekiden. » A chuckle escaped from both of them.

But if Yuki thought it was only a long running gag he had to bear with, Hana was convinced he would succeed.

« You won’t consider it ? » she pushed.

« Nah no way. And we’re only two, that doesn’t make a team. »

After the hotpot incident Hana never really returned to Aotake. Haiji firmly assured that the doors would always be open but she didn’t want to outstay his welcome.

The following year, two other people moved in. Haiji was halfway in, Hakone mountain was not as distant as it used to be. Next year, he thought. It became apparent that his time was steadily running low despite the two chances left.

« Do you know where you want to go after ? »

« Kansai ! I can’t see better option. » Her decision seemed absolute so he didn’t bother to dwell on her ends.

« You can look further », he guaranteed. He’ll be fine on his own, he tried to say.

When another spring brought cherry petals at their feet, two more students joined Aotake. What used to be a dusty pension was now a very lively house share, with ups and daily reminders from Haiji that they were, necessarily, going to run the Ekiden. He was nicknamed the Demon but the broken record would fit him as well.

Staring at his own deformed self in the bath water, Haiji was happy they were more, closer to his goal, but still not enough. When he stood up, his doubting reflection vanished in a splash. If he, of all people, wavered, then nobody would catch his falling dreams. Next year, he repeated, lulling himself in this reassuring motive.

But when the final hour came, he reached the starting line.

« Why are you running ? » she wondered.

« I’m about to find out. »

At Hana’s go, they stepped out of their own world and tread on Haiji’s path.
