Bonus Round 1: Three Words

A lot can be said in just three words, and we're challenging you to do just that in this bonus round! From your "I love you"s to your "red, white, blue"s, you'll have just three words to prompt and be prompted.

    • Please don't go
    • Morning, flower, kiss
    • Past, Present, Future
  • Prompts can be in any language as long as you provide an English translation!
  • Fill prompts by creating fanworks inspired by all three words, or only one or two! The choice is yours.
  • You cannot earn points by filling your teammate's prompts or your own! (That said, we won't stop you from doing so for fun!)
  • You must use the prompt/fill headers below, and you cannot leave any line blank!

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
    • Traditional art is also allowed with a good quality photo/scan

It doesn’t begin, and it hasn’t ended yet, and maybe that means it never ends, that they will always find pockets of time and space to fit into, no matter what the universe is. There were times before consciousness, probably; there are things dimly-recalled from an awareness that is not entirely compatible with the one Taiga has now, but there are countless in the tangle of the ones that are. Or perhaps it’s all the same strand, knotted up like yarn pulled out of a ball too fast, folding in on itself, because time is like that. Time is a ring with an invisible seam, but that could easily be Taiga’s preferred metaphor because of the way rings always seem to pop up. Daisy chains, woven around fingers, knotted blades of grass, jewels on fingers, weights around their necks, the way they have circled the globe countless times in pursuit of each other.

They can’t remember everything; they don’t always remember each other until later, when something seemingly random unlocks it, and it’s almost never at the same time. The time they had ended up in Oregon, Taiga hadn’t remembered until the middle of a fight, and all of a sudden Tatsuya’s frustrations with him had started to sink in, and also Tatsuya was waiting for a reply to his immediate accusation, which had been necessary but had also seemed like it ought to come after the fact that Taiga had remembered all of those places and moments.

So he’d just said, “I remember.”

Tatsuya had looked like he wanted to drag out the fight on principle, but like he couldn’t, a thousand tiny muscle twitches that Taiga has spent millennia memorizing.

There was a time when Tatsuya was more open, but the long arc of history, the angles that make up some proportion of the ring (or the entirety many times over, and then some--hadn’t he learned something like this in high school geometry once, twice, many times?) has bent him towards the way he is now, the things he is always hiding, but he still moves the same, makes the same expressions, as often as he relearns how to mask himself. Taiga can almost always get a grip on what Tatsuya’s thinking, before he knows how he knows, when they meet as adults and Tatsuya’s already so subtle.

They have been soldiers on the same battlefield, in the same tent at night, when the smell of blood and dirt keep Taiga’s stomach turning and Tatsuya rubs his back until he falls into a fitful sleep, when Tatsuya’s too tired almost to stand, but keeps his face forward and Taiga keeps going, too. When Tatsuya has been a general, determined to keep the burden of all of this off Taiga’s back, but Taiga grabs more than his share anyway. They have explored empty territories together, felt their combined world expand at the edges.

The look on Tatsuya’s face as he steps out of the shade and tugs Taiga over to see something, his impossibly-soft hand curled loosely around Taiga’s, the way (if they meet early enough, and they usually do) Taiga goes from looking up at Tatsuya to looking down--all of these are almost constant, and yet they are never repetitive. It is never the same, sliced out from a time and a place and context that make everything different. And even without that, Taiga would relive one lifetime again and again, if it met he could meet Tatsuya every time, if they would get to be together.

A concept like destiny or soul mates is missing the point, taking an exit out of the loop and going straight across, cutting out what’s important and what makes all of this worthwhile. Nothing will explain why they end up finding each other, only that in their uncountable lifetimes they’ve had so many where they miss each other. For being in the wrong time, the wrong place, one of them simply absent, for passing each other on the street and perhaps brushing shoulders if the street’s a little narrow, but never looking closely enough to see. And even without that, there is no invisible force plucking the two of them out and pushing them together. If there were, why would they fall apart so often? Why have so many lifetimes involved drawn-out fights, periods of time where one or both of them disappears and they can’t find each other even when they both want it? Destiny, God, the Universe, something, might place them where they are, but they’re the ones who have to do the work of fixing the gaps that always erupt between them, adding expansion joints to the bridge so it’s steady enough to hold both of them over the water.

“I’m afraid sometimes that you’ll get tired of me,” Tatsuya says, the small smile on his lips tight, tighter than Taiga can hold him to attempt to make up for those feelings of inadequacy that always sprout over him and come back like a wisteria vine.

(He’s been working on them for centuries, but it’s hard. Taiga’s no closer to perfect.)

“Never,” Taiga promises, pressing a kiss to the back of Tatsuya’s neck.

They have had so much already, but Taiga’s made his peace with how greedy he is--because eternity with Tatsuya would never be enough, and the years here and there, chopped between places and times and circumstances as it is will certainly never be enough. But Taiga will grab onto as much of it as he can at once, and if that means sinking his hands into buckets of ice and pulling out ice cubes until his skin is raw and throbbing and red, well, he’s suffered worse for Tatsuya before.

Tatsuya doesn’t ask him if he’s sure, or how he knows. He rubs his thumb across Taiga’s, accepting (at least nominally) what he wants to be true (even though it is the truth). The ring on the chain around his neck gleams in the lamplight. Forever is a long time, even when it’s full of gaps, and realistically they can’t even see into the next life, where and when it’ll be, how and if they’ll be able to find each other. But they’ll find each other, somehow. There’s always a next time.

I hardly ever write Suga anymore and I don't think I've really written Kageyama that much (except in the very far background and even that's debatable) so I'm super happy that you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the sweet compliments, it means so much to me to know now only that people enjoyed a fic but WHAT they enjoyed about it. :)

Riko cancels practice the whole week before training camp. It’s unprecedented, yes, and inconsistent with how hard she’s been driving the team lately--but that’s exactly why they need the time off. People can’t exercise all the time; that’s one of the first things she’d learned observing her father at work. It’s not something she’d really put to use before now, but she’s made too many mistakes, and she’s not going to make the same ones over again.

That’s another thing her father had taught her, from the time she’d been barely big enough to hold a basketball. It’s okay to try something and screw up. It’s okay to screw up multiple times, just as long as you don’t make the exact same mistake twice. That shows you’re not paying attention or not learning, or not trying hard enough--expecting it to work based on luck is a shot in the dark. Pushing her players to the brink, again and over again, driving her starters until they can barely move, is too risky of a gamble.

Riko could get away with it, and get away with ignoring her better instincts, when she had a real ace or two, Kagami or Teppei, up her sleeve. She could push them until their legs gave out, and they’d do it because they’re fucking crazy about basketball, because their desire to win matches hers, because they know as they go the team goes. She could get away with it, and did, had convinced herself that since they said it was okay to push them that far that it was.

Kagami holds no ill will towards her, though he has every right to. But Teppei, at a good hospital, undergoing intense physical rehab on his knee, does. She can see it on his face over their blurry video calls, and he means for her to see it (Teppei has always known how to pull his punches just so, and that’s one of the many reasons why they broke up--though, now, it’s hard to imagine them being together in the first place). He was the one who had ultimately decided on his particular operation, on coming back and pushing himself, but Riko knew what he was getting into. She could have mitigated it, pulled him back so he didn’t wreck his knee quite so much, quite so fast, but she’d put all of her options and hopes on one half-court shot that had happened to go in. She’d let him fuck up his other knee too, because he’d had to rely on it so much--all for a trophy and a victory.

It had felt really fucking good. But now, in hindsight, the victory tastes bitter, like a mortgage loan she’d defaulted on after showing off her fancy new house to everyone she knew.

And now she doesn’t have Teppei, and she doesn’t have Kagami. Mitobe had struggled shaking off the rust--he’d been benched half the season for Teppei when he could have, should have, been playing. Fukuda and Kawahara have, between them, not even a whole game’s worth of minutes played. Furihata’s been falling further behind on the drills because he’s been attempting to coach Yagi every day and Yagi himself is still not remotely in shape.

That leaves Hyuuga, Izuki, Koganei, Tsuchida, Kuroko, and Asahina--Riko’s run a team of six players before, and it didn’t exactly work. And what will the team be next year? She may not be coaching it, but it’s her responsibility to leave behind something that continued. She owes it to her yearmates, at least. Perhaps she had been wrong to work the kids who’d showed up the first day as hard as she did. Maybe some of them will show up again next year. Maybe there are some kids left in middle school who are interested in the possibility of Seirin, still the reigning winter cup champion.

The thought weighs heavily as they approach their first scrimmage in training camp. At least, with this, all of them will be playing nearly the whole time. It will be grossly uneven, but that’s part of the point. It only exposes how grossly uneven the team is, and how Riko hasn’t been coaching them to better make up for it. She tosses up the tipoff and gets out of the way.
Fukuda beats Mitobe; he’s been sprouting up like a seedling transplanted to a large, empty pot, the tallest on the team now, though he’s still getting used to his body. He passes the ball up to Kuroko, who makes a clean of his own to Kawahara, who takes a shot from the outside and airballs it. Tsuchida grabs the rebound, and Kawahara shakes it off much more easily than he does when he misses a shot in a game. It’s the low pressure, maybe, but in other practices and unofficial matches Kawahara’s acted the same way.

Maybe he’d stopped putting the pressure on himself when Riko was focusing on the other players. He’d gotten better, but she can’t take any credit for it--negative credit, maybe, for not giving him the experience, and not trusting him. Or maybe this gym, away from school, where it’s not likely Riko will sub in Yagi for him, seems like it has less pressure.

This isn’t like her; she should be putting the pressure on--but that doesn’t always work. That doesn’t always bring out the best in people. There are other ways, too; there are things this team has been missing. She thinks about Teppei’s voice, encouraging them all to have fun before every game--sincere or no, isn’t that why they play basketball?

And it’s no fun if you can’t win, and you can’t win for very long if your plan is to overuse your heavy hitters. Maybe in a video game, but even then that’s poor strategy.
Kawahara steals the ball back from Hyuuga, passes it down to Asahina and nets an assist on his long two from just inside the line. Maybe this team’s in better shape than she’d thought.

The door slams, and Ryuunosuke knows that he’s totally and completely screwed.

“Ryuu!” Saeko calmly calls up to him, her voice neutral, giving nothing away.

“Yeah?!” he yells back.

“Come down here for a sec, would ya?” she demands.

He hesitates. “Nah, I think I’m good.”

“Lemme rephrase that, then!” The anger starts to bleed into her tone, and Ryuunosuke swallows hard. “Get your ass down here right now. Don’t make me come up there, you little shit!”

“Sorry, Ryuunosuke isn’t here right now, can I take a message?” he calls, looking around his room in a panic, desperate for somewhere to hide.

“I gave you a chance to do this the easy way!” He hears footsteps on the stairs and his panic peaks. Without thinking too much, he quickly dives into the basket of clean laundry Saeko’d told him to put away, burying himself under the mound of clothes.

He’s invisible now. She’ll never find him.

He’s really fucking glad that Saeko hasn’t fixed the squeaky hinges on his bedroom door yet. As soon as she opens the door, he knows, and he quickly covers his mouth with a hand to make his breathing quieter.

“I know you’re in here,” she says, her voice calm again. “Come on out, Ryuu. I just wanna talk.”

Ryuunosuke says nothing.

“Oh, so that’s how it’s gonna be?” she huffs. He can hear her moving through the room, looking for him. There aren’t that many hiding spots in his room. She’s totally gonna find him soon. “I’ll find ya. I’ve got all day. Oh, wait, I don’t! Because someone stole my phone and decided it was definitely alright to text the girl I’ve been into and ask her out for me!”

And suddenly, the clothes aren’t on top of him anymore, and he can see again, and oh shit he’s so screwed.

“Well?” Saeko demands, fists planted firmly on her hips. “You got anything to say for yourself?”

“Yo, you’ve reached Ryuu, I can’t come to the phone right now. Please leave a message after the tone, and I’ll call you back,” he offers weakly.

“I really hate you,” she informs.

“Do you really, though?” He winks and shoots her finger guns. “I got you a date!”

“Yeah, I still hate you,” she repeats, “You’re an asshole.”

“But you’ve got a date with Alisa now!!” Ryuunosuke insists, moving his hands back and forth. “You can thank me by not killing me!”

“I coulda asked her out on my own, you know,” she says wearily, “Fuck off with the finger guns, I get it.”

“You were taking too long,” he shrugs, reluctantly dropping the finger guns. For now. “Pining is for losers.”

“Oh, really?” Saeko raises an eyebrow. “If pining is for losers, have you asked Yuu out yet?”

“Of course not! I’m definitely a loser,” he insists.

“I see.” Saeko grins wolfishly, and Ryuunosuke realizes that his phone is not, in fact, in his pocket.

“Saeko… don’t do this…” he pleads, and she cackles. He tries to yeet himself out of the basket, but his feet are tangled in pants. Saeko lunges for his desk, grabbing his phone and bolting from the room.

“Saeko!! You little shit!” he shouts, trying to free himself from his own pants, which have betrayed him in such a cruel way.

“Sorry, Saeko isn’t here right now, can I take a message?” she calls back, still cackling.

“You traitor!!!”

220.

Once they’re all together, they drag all of their mattresses into Koutarou’s quarters. Yuuji’s never get used, although he does still have access to the rooms, just in case he ever needs them.

Tetsurou’s rooms are converted into their own personal headquarters.

The crisp white walls are smudged with graphite and bleeding ink, scribbled notes below tacked-up articles, photos and maps connected by bright bits of string.

They get closer every day, but they’re still weeks away, maybe months away, maybe fucking years away.

They still don’t know which Miya it was that Koutarou killed.

The cigarette is trembling between Yuuji’s fingers, or maybe it’s his hand that’s shaking as he stares blankly at the wall, at the case, at their months of work.

“The sewers,” Yuuji suggests numbly.

“Cleared last week,” Tetsurou sighs. “No sign of him.”

“The abandoned shopping center up north?”

Tetsurou shakes his head. “Burned down a couple days ago.”

Yuuji takes a drag off the smoke, following the bright blue line of string connecting the shopping center to the apartment complex Miya may have been seen in two months prior and raising an eyebrow. “Foul play?”

“Not that they can prove,” Tetsurou huffs. “They found candles and sleeping bags in the wreckage. Evidence pointing to a pair of squatters who were careless with their lights.”

Yuuji’s heart skips a beat. “But it could have been him. It could have been one of their bolt holes.”

Tetsurou chuckles grimly. “Coulda been, sure. Could also just be us grasping at straws.”

“But it could have been him,” Yuuji repeats, “Marker?”

“Smoke?” Tetsurou counters.

Yuuji mumbles a complaint, but trades the smoke for the marker. He circles the shopping center on the large map dominating most of the wall.

“We’re getting close,” Yuuji insists, “I can feel it.”

246.

“Koutarou, you gotta talk to Kenma!!!” Yuuji insists.

“No,” Koutarou refuses bluntly, his voice muffled by the blanket he’s hiding under.

“Kou…” Tetsurou sighs, running his hands through his hair. “You gotta come out eventually.”

“No!” Koutarou repeats, “’s my fault.”

“Babe-chan, it wasn’t your fault,” Yuuji protests for what must be the thousandth time. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“My fault,” Koutarou repeats with a sniffle, and Yuuji sees the mound of blankets shift slightly as Koutarou retreats deeper into the pile. “Ruin everything— everyone I touch. Can’t talk to Kenma, I’ll ruin them too.”

Yuuji looks hopelessly at Tetsurou, who looks just as lost as Yuuji feels.

“C’mon, Kou,” Tetsurou urges gently, “Kenma can’t resist you. They can’t say no to you. We need their help, we need them to let us see the footage from the shopping center. Miya might have been there!”

“Miya!” Koutarou sniffles, “Tha’s my fault too! I shot him, ruined everything!”

“Kou-chan…” Yuuji lets his voice trail off, realizing they’re not gonna get anywhere like this. He sighs. “Okay. Okay. We’ll just leave you alone.”

They leave Koutarou alone. They head back towards Tetsurou’s room. The second they turn the corner, the second they’re out of earshot, Tetsurou’s fist slams into the wall.

“Fuck!” he shouts, his voice breaking. He punches the wall again, smearing bright red along the crisp white, and Yuuji’s heart breaks a little more.

“Tetsu-chan—” Yuuji starts, but Tetsurou cuts him off.

“We need to fix this,” Tetsurou hisses. “Right now.”

“Kenma—”

“If Kenma won’t help, we go to someone else,” Tetsurou says, his voice low, raspy, dark. “Hell, we hack in ourselves if we need to. We need to fix this.”

“Yeah,” Yuuji agrees, swallowing hard. “We do.”

The before it’s too late remains unspoken, hanging heavy in the air between them.

Bokuto’s Crime Coefficient is climbing like never before.

Yuuji’s never been more terrified.

259.

“Sugawara.” Tetsurou’s words sound dry. Crumbling. Deteriorating. “It’s been awhile.”

“Kuroo, Terushima,” Sugawara greets, somewhere between friendly and distant. “It has. I don’t think I’ve seen either of you since—”

Sugawara cuts himself off. He doesn’t say the name. The wound is still too fresh, despite how many months have passed.

“Sorry to show up like this, Suga-chan, but we need your help,” Yuuji says simply, trying to stay composed.

“It’s Kou,” Tetsurou tells, and his voice breaks. Cracks. Crumbles.

Any reservations Sugawara has disappear in an instant. His expression is nothing but concern. “What’s wrong?”

“His Hue—” Yuuji swallows hard. “After Miya, after my Hue—”

Tetsurou barely keeps himself together as he breathes, “He won’t leave his room. He won’t talk to us. He’s like—”

A wound too fresh.

“I won’t— it won’t happen again.” Sugawara takes a shaky breath. “What do you need?”

266.

Miya’s on the footage.

The shot is blurry, the camera streaked with rain, the air thick with smoke. The clip is hardly a second.

It’s enough.

Yuuji would recognize Miya anywhere.

273.

“He was there,” Yuuji repeats, raking his hands through his hair. “I was right, we were right, where did he go?!”

“We’re running out of time,” Tetsurou murmurs, studying the map as Yuuji pours through the mission reports that Chikara wouldn’t let him see, the reports Sugawara retrieved for them with ease. “Anything from the day of the fire?”

“Of course not. He’s too fucking smart for that,” Yuuji curses, tossing the file carelessly onto the growing pile on the floor. “Where could he have been heading? What else is connected?”

“Just the apartment complex—” Tetsurou pales. “And the building we found them in the first time.”

“You’re fucking joking.” Yuuji leafs through the box of reports, looking for the file he knows he saw. “There was— yeah, there was a disturbance a block from there, three days after the fire. Tetsu-chan, he went back.”

“Call Daishou. Now,” Tetsurou practically growls. “He owes me a favor, he’ll take us out. He has to.”

294.

“Kou-chan, get up,” Yuuji urges, quickly, urgently.

“Go ‘way,” Koutarou mumbles. “Leave me alone.”

“Kou-chan, we found him,” Yuuji insists.

Koutarou jolts, sitting up for the first time in weeks.

“Yuuji?” Koutarou asks, confused, unsure, hopeful.

“He’s right, Kou.” Tetsurou grins. “We found him. We found the bastard.”

“Why are we still here, then?” Koutarou demands, and he grins, and the cracks in Yuuji’s heart start to knit themselves back together.

281.

“He’s in there,” Yuuji tells, gesturing towards the too-familiar building, the place where it all went to shit, the place where they’ll fix it all.

“You crazy fuckin’ genius.” Daishou grins, clapping Tetsurou and Koutarou each on a shoulder. “Go on. Give ‘em hell.”

Chris dried his hair and wrapped the towel around his waist as he walked from the bathroom to the bedroom. He had just started to root around in his drawer when his phone rang. Chris reached over and answer. He set his phone down on the stand as Miyuki came into view.

“Good morning.”

Miyuki looked him up and down. “Yes, it is.”

Chris laughed softly as he continued to gather up his clothes for the day. After years of rivalry and friendship, it was still a little unbelievable that this was their relationship now.

“Did you purposefully call at this time?”

Chris glanced over his shoulder and Miyuki arched an eyebrow at him. “Did I purposefully call when I knew you’d be getting back from your run but before you had to go to class with the hope of catching you right after you showered? I’m good, but not that good.”

“I had to ask,” replied Chris. “With you, I never know.”

Miyuki smirked. “I’m flattered.”

“Was there a reason you were calling?”

“Yeah, actually, I was wondering what your opinion was about Tanaguchi.”

At that, Chris put down the shirt he had been holding and crossed the room. He sat down on his bed and picked up the phone. He wanted to see the look on Miyuki’s face when he asked,

“You want to know my opinion about Tanaguchi?”

Miyuki’s smirk went a little unsure around the edges. “Yeah.”

“The pitcher you’re going to be facing in about...six hours.”

“Ah, yeah…”

Chris shook his head. He could feel the loose drops fall from his hair on to his shoulders. There was no way Miyuki would be so ill prepared for an upcoming game.

“You know, you don’t have to come up with an excuse to call.”

Miyuki glanced away. A faint blush rising on his cheeks. And Chris felt a familiar ache in his chest at the sight. The one that reminded him that they always had terrible timing.

The fight for the starting catcher spot that Miyuki had hoped for in High School had never manifested--cut short by Chris’ shoulder injury.

The tentative dance that they had been in for years. Years of late night phone calls and last-minute meals. Years of coming up with excuses to talk to each other, to see each other. Years of coming up with excuses for why neither of them had ever acted on their increasingly obvious attraction.

“Old habits, I guess,” replied Miyuki with a shrug. “Do you have any idea how many times I borrowed a scorebook from you as an excuse to talk?”

“What about the time you asked me to teach Sawamura the out-low?”

“I mean getting you back in the training room was nice, but mostly I needed you to teach Sawamura the out-low.”

Chris laughed. “We figured it out eventually.”

“You mean you figured it out,” replied Miyuki. “I’m still mad that you made the first move.”

“It’s not a competition.”

“Isn’t everything?”

They had been caught in the rain and had stopped under an awning. And Miyuki had looked so sad and so pathetic as he shivered so badly his teeth chattered. And Chris couldn’t help but pull him in close. To close the distance between them.

The kiss they shared was shaky. Literally. And Chris realized he was shaking too. Either from the cold or from the emotions that were threatening to overwhelm him.

They pulled away laughing.

And Miyuki had pressed a quick kiss to his forehead before taking his hand and together they ran through the rain.

And two weeks later Miyuki had left for Spring Training in Okinawa.

“Watch out for Tanaguchi’s slider,” said Chris absently. “He’s been retooling it.”

The grin that Miyuki gave him said he already knew that but was still glad to hear it. “Are you still going to give me pointers after your drafted?”

Chris returned the smile. “Nope. It’s a competition after all.”

“I’m going to have to come up with something else to talk to you about.”

“You have to do that anyway,” replied Chris drly.

Miyuki laughed. “I miss you.”

“I’m right here.”

That wasn’t really the answer Miyuki was looking for and it wasn’t really the answer Chris wanted to give--

But Miyuki smiled back at him in a way that Chris had been waiting for years to see.

“I know.”

“Can I call you after the game?” asked Chris.

“Yeah,” replied Miyuki. “I’ll be right here.”

This is excellent! I feel like you wrote Tatsuya's struggle very well and the subtle way Taiga began expressing his affections (or letting them bleed in maybe without thought) was really great.
