Under the sunlight, Kuroo’s wings are iridescent.

The swell of color, pressed against the ink-black undertones of Kuroo’s wings, draws Daichi’s gaze immediately.

“You didn’t have to clear out the entire park just because you wanted to stretch your wings,” Daichi says, his eyes flickering away. A hint of disapproval lines his words, but whether or not he means it really is up for question. “What if someone sees?”

Kuroo’s serpentine eyes are still covered by his dark sunglasses, but as his lips curl into a decidedly cat-like smirk, Daichi feels certain that Kuroo has just winked at him.

He would know; he’s had six thousand years to learn the ins and outs of Kuroo’s quirks. Six thousand years to—

“But I’ve taken care of that, haven’t I?” Kuroo says, laughter in his voice. He flings his arms open in a dramatic gesture, and the wind follows the motion, rippling through his raven-black wings. “Don’t you trust me?”

If Kuroo had been anywhere else, this would have been quite the intimidating show. His smile is sharp, wicked, and wholly smug, and the faint sheen of iridescent color over his sleek feathers. The rainbow, kitten-patterned picnic blanket only adds to the image.

Briefly, Daichi tries to picture this Kuroo in the depths of Hell. He knows there isn’t much light down there, and even less color. Kuroo had told him that the ceilings are low and the walls are always creeping inward. There’s barely any semblance of personal space, much less the space to spread one’s wings.

Demons don’t like to be reminded of their wings. The blackness is a curse, and, sometimes, if one spends too much time underground, the wings begin to rot. God’s gift.

Kuroo’s wings, though, are perhaps the most beautiful pair Daichi has ever seen.

(He’s glad Kuroo is here, with him, instead.)

Daichi’s gaze flickers back to Kuroo’s wings, and then the chesire cat grin ghosting across his face. “Don’t be like that,” Daichi says, and unfurls his own wings. White, for angels; it’s a relief to spread his wings out as far as they go, to let the wind ruffle through the feathers and the sunlight warm the surface evenly.

In Daichi’s bookshop, if he were to try and stretch his wings, he’d knock over every single bookshelf in wingspan radius. Not the most desirable outcome. “Not saying that I approve, you know, I’m giving you my best disappointed look right now for unnecessary manipulation of humans—”

“Come on, angel,” Kuroo laughs, like he does every time Daichi tries to go holier-than-thou on him, “lighten up! Have some pie.”

Daichi throws the demon a look , to which Kuroo just laughs again. He reaches over to open the picnic basket he’s brought along with him and pulls out a rather large apple pie, slices pre-cut. Wordlessly, Kuroo peels back the plastic wrap and hands Daichi the pie, a fork, and a paper plate.

“Dig in, angel,” Kuroo says, “We’re wasting daylight.”

“It’s literally mid-morning.”

Daichi rolls his eyes but gently receives Kuroo’s offerings anyways. They fall into a comfortable, companionable silence, something that has become familiar in the time they’ve spent together.

It’s not until Daichi has polished off his pie that Kuroo speaks up again. “I missed you,” he says, and it’s so soft and so quiet under the sounds of the birds chirping and the grass rustling and the gurgling from a nearby fountain that Daichi almost misses it. He blinks as the words settle around his ears.

As the demon’s words slowly sink in, Daichi slowly turns his head, his eyes widening just the slightest touch. The background noise of the park fades into near-silence.

Kuroo picks up on Daichi’s shift immediately. He hesitates, and then he stills, wings curling inwards just slightly. The tips of his feathers brush against the blanket, the grass, the picnic basket. They don’t touch Daichi.

“You know,” Daichi says, a hint of smugness entering his voice, “If you have something to say to me, you should look me in the eye.”

He reaches over the picnic basket, and quick as a snake (the holiest of snakes, mind you), snatches Kuroo’s sunglasses off and tucks it behind his back, far out of reach.

“Oh, shut up,” Kuroo says, and now that his sunglasses are off, Daichi can see the slow dilation of his eyes, the faint redness spreading across his cheeks. It is, Daichi thinks, a gentle warmth unfurling in his chest, a good look.

“It’s, you know—ineffable.”

(Six thousand years to fall in love.)

Six months ago, no one could even imagine that such a big change would happen. Aoba Johsai was the name of the school a certain group went to, and volleyball was the sport they played after a day filled with classes was over. At the time, they were oblivious to what was coming. Everyone was oblivious to what was coming, because who could predict it? Aside from Japan’s military base, who hid the fact from the rest of the population, refusing to believe that the threat was true.

But it was true. Although it took six months before it happened, the threat turned into something real. The air above Japan was flooded with jet airplanes dropping bombs down throughout the whole country. This was a declaration of war. The bombing injured many greatly, and there were many causalities. Especially within the military. For the enemy had been clever, it seemed. They hadn’t just gone for bombing the country, they had also focused on specific places that would hurt, before they came charging onto the land.

The volleyball club was holding a meeting in the gym when the school next to them was hit by a bomb. No one had expected it and at first, everyone was frozen. But then they were all out and running, running away from the area of fire and explosions, only to find that the city was wrecked too.

There was an abandoned building not too far away, and somehow the team of eight found a way to hide. Now they weren’t the only survivors, but being away from the central, they hadn’t heard the message. Helicopters arrived and they assumed it was enemies. But it was the survivors getting taken to a safe place. All, except those eight that had hidden away for hours and were all starting to get rather hungry and thirsty.

As the area was left deserted, with nothing left for the fire to burn, leaving only small flames.
“What are we going to do?” Oikawa wailed. “We’ve been here for hours and everyone and everything’s gone!”
“This is no time for you to get upset, Captain,” Matsukawa remarked. “We need to stay calm and find a way to survive.”
“Matsukawa’s right, Shittykawa. It seems like everyone else who was alive here is gone. You guys stay here while I go raid a house that’s still standing for any food and anything else we need.” This was the first time Iwaizumi had spoken in a while. He had stood, unmoving as he gazed out a broken window, watching the town burn.
“You shouldn’t go alone, Iwaizumi. It’s too dangerous. Take one of us with you,” Hanamaki spoke, making Iwaizumi turn around to face them.
“I’ll be fine on my own,” he replied, “You guys should think about what we’re going to do from now on.”
“You can’t decide that, Iwa-chan! I’m the captain and I won’t let you go alone,” Oikawa had stopped crying for the moment being and was blocking the exit to the building.
“If we go as several people, we can find some clothes and such to bring too,” Matsukawa added, “Are you still certain that you’ll go off by yourself?”

After a while of silence, Iwaizumi finally spoke.
“Alright,” he agreed reluctantly. “We should go as four so we can split up without being alone.”
“That’s easy,” Oikawa replied, “We’re four third years. We should go.”
“And leave our kouhais behind? We can’t do that, Shittykawa,” Iwaizumi replied. “We should have at least one of us stay behind.”
“Why’s that? They’re capable of looking after themselves,” Hanamaki pointed out.
“Yahaba,” Oikawa turned to face the second year who had kept out of the conversation along with the three other younger students.
“Y-yes?” Yahaba replied uncertainly.
“If something happens to us, you’ll be in charge. If we’re not back in two hours, then assume that we’re gone and figure a way to save yourselves.” Oikawa instructed.
“R-right!” Yahaba replied.

And so the four teammates were off on their journey to find basic needs to survive. Luck was with them that day, it seemed. For they hadn’t been walking for longer than ten minutes when they came to not one, but two houses untouched by the fires spreading.
“Let’s stick together for now,” Iwaizumi spoke as he lead the three others up to one of the standing houses, where the door was wide open. The other three were cautious, but Iwaizumi showed no fear.
“Hello, is anyone there?” Iwaizumi called into the house. After several seconds with no answer, he turned to face the other three. “Let’s head in, it seems empty.”
Iwaizumi grabbed a bag that had been abandoned in the entrance and emptied its remains. It seemed to be a school bag, for what came out of it was books, a pencil case and such school supplies.

They found the kitchen and Iwaizumi began opening drawers to find what food they could ration, for they didn’t know how long they were stuck like this.
“Don’t just stand there, help me out,” Iwaizumi told them, putting the food in the bag.
“Matsukawa and I can go upstairs and find some clothes,” Hanamaki offered.
“Why are you bringing me?” Matsukawa huffed, annoyed.
“Good idea,” Iwaizumi nodded, “Just not too much, alright? Our main focus is food. But if you find bags that are good for carrying things, bring them down. Lazykawa, go get that bag and empty it so you can fill it up with food.”
Oikawa followed Iwaizumi’s instructions, picking up the bag he pointed at as the two others went up the stairs.

After a while, it seemed like they had emptied the kitchen for things they could use. They’d found a pot that they decided to bring along too, somehow manging to pack it into one of the bags that were tightly packed. Steps on the staircase could be heard, and a moment later Hanamaki and Matsukawa reappeared.
“We found some clothes. We only took eight sets so everyone has something to change to,” Matsukawa spoke.
“We found some cleaning supplies too. They might come in handy at some point,” Hanamaki added.
“That’s fine,” Iwaizumi nodded, before taking out a few kitchen knives. “Here, take one and keep it safe. We can’t know if there’s anyone out there. If you two can go back with what we’ve gathered so far, Oikawa and I can raid the next house.”
“No,” Hanamaki shook his head, “We’ll come with you to make sure the house is empty first.”

They made their way to the second house where Iwaizumi yet again called but received no answer. They entered it, watching their surroundings carefully before making their way to the kitchen.
“I think we’re clear,” Iwaizumi said. “You guys should head back with as much as you can carry. We’ll empty this place and then return too.”
“We’ll help you fill the bags up,” Hanamaki replied, not moving an inch from the kitchen as he opened the bag he carried on his back and opened a drawer to look for food.
“We’ve already been out for almost two hours. They’ll assume we’re gone if we don’t come back,” Iwaizumi replied, “You two go back and tell them we’re on the way, we’re just collecting the last items.”
“Alright,” Hanamaki gave in. He filled up his bags, carrying as much as he could. Matsukawa did the same.
“Then we’ll be off. Stay safe. We’re expecting to see you back at the building soon.” The two turned and left the kitchen, making their way out of the house and down the street.

“Let’s hurry, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa said as he packed. “I want to get back to the others soon.”
“I do too. We’ll take as much as we can and then run. You still have the knife I gave you, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good, you never know if we will encounter anyone.”
“How can you stay so calm in a situation like this?”
“Because the best way to get out of it is to be calm and think rationally. And I know that’s something you don’t do.”
“Iwa-chan! So mean!”

When they were finally finished not too long after, the two students left the building. They walked down the empty, abandoned street, with not another being in sight. It was quiet, aside from the sound of fire crackling. There were places where the fire was still raging, other places where the fire was only a small spark. Iwaizumi and Oikawa made their way around the fires, careful not to get caught in the flames.

“What’s that noise?” Oikawa frowned.
“What noise?”
“It’s a wailing sound. Do you think someone’s stuck somewhere?”
“It doesn’t sound human to me.”
“Does that mean it’s an animal? Let me go check, Iwa-chan!”
“No! It’s dangerous. We should head back. Keeping ourselves safe is top priority.”
“But I can’t leave it there! Hey, look after these bags.”
“No, wait!” Iwaizumi reached out to stop Oikawa, but the latter was already running towards the burning building.

Iwaizumi waited outside for several minutes, cursing under his breath. Should he run in and get Oikawa out? There was no sign of the brown-haired setter appearing anytime soon. But running head first into a fire was dangerous. If he inhaled too much smoke, it could be bad for his lungs. Iwaizumi had just decided to enter, taking the bags off he was holding and dumping them on the ground when Oikawa came staggering out of the building, holding his arms to his chest and collapsed on the ground in front of Iwaizumi.

“Oi, Shittykawa, stay with me!” Iwaizumi pushed Oikawa up against the bundle of bags so he could sit up. The captain was coughing badly, gasping desperately for fresh air. As he loosened the grip on his chest, Iwaizumi saw that what he had been holding was a kitten. It couldn’t have been very old, but old enough to be taken away from its mother.

Iwaizumi supported the captain sitting and rummaged through one of the bags, finding an unopened water bottle. “Drink some water if you can get it down.”
Oikawa accepted it, but he wasn’t able to drink much between coughing.
“You idiot,” Iwaizumi mumbled, “You can suffocate from inhaling too much smoke.”
“The kitten…” Oikawa began weakly, “It’s alright, isn’t it?”
“It’s fine, idiot. Your life is more important than a cat’s life. What would we do without you?”
“Iwa-chan… Thank you,” Oikawa laid back and closed his eyes, “But I’m glad… the kitten’s okay.”
“Don’t die, asshole! The kitten is your responsibility now, you need to help care for it!”
“I know… it will be safe with you… Iwa-chan.” Oikawa’s voice was quiet.
“Shittykawa, fight for it! Do it for the kitten, for the team. Do it for me!”
“This is an unusual sight, seeing you panic.”
“Seeing you this calm is unusual too,” Iwaizumi remarked, “In fact, why are you so calm?”
“Because I’ll be fine,” Oikawa replied. “I’m not weak enough to die here. We haven’t even been to nationals yet.”
“Well it sounds like you aren’t completely gone,” Iwaizumi sighed of relief. “Can you tell me when you’ve rested enough so we can go back to the building? You can rest more there, but we really need to get back soon. I can’t carry all these bags and you and the kitten by myself.”
“I can take the kitten,” Oikawa replied, pausing to let out a series of dry coughs. “Just give me a few minutes.”
“The sooner we get away from the fire the better,” Iwaizumi remarked. He started picking up the bags, trying to figure out the best way to carry them, and which bags could be put on top of the others.

“I’m ready to go back,” Oikawa got to his feet slowly, not letting go of the kitten he’d been holding onto.
“Well, come on then,” Iwaizumi started walking slowly, “The others are waiting on us.”
“I know,” Oikawa replied, coughing, as he stumbled along.

When the building came into sight, they saw the six other survivors rush out to greet them.
“What happened?” Matsukawa asked, concerned as he took some of the bags to relieve Iwaizumi.
“Trashykawa ran into a fire to save a cat,” Iwaizumi replied.
“You idiot,” Hanamaki replied, “We found some old mattresses and blankets in the loft of the building so you can rest inside. We’ve also started cooking dinner, Kunimi is inside taking care of it.”
“Then let’s go back inside,” Iwaizumi said, “And after this idiot here has rested and we’ve all had something to eat, we should come up with a plan to leave this place and seek somewhere safer. Sound good?”
Everyone agreed to his statement, and they headed back into the safety of the building.

The national volleyball championship. It seemed to be over in a blink of the eye. One day they were facing off against teams in their own prefecture, next they had made it to nationals only for it to end. It ended too quickly, everyone seemed to agree on that. They had all wanted the moment to last forever, the moment where they could stand on the court and play volleyball together. The opposing team didn’t matter, as long as they had their own team, they would fly, fly towards greater heights. And continue soaring towards the top, which at one point had seemed so far away that they were unable to see it. But somehow, they had lifted their feet off the ground and their wings had grown, they weren’t just baby crows anymore. They were maturing, aging, getting bigger, getting stronger.

And yet, they couldn’t believe that it was time for the elders to move on. Or rather, they didn’t want it to be true. It was a time they knew was coming and yet had attempted to push away all thoughts and reminders of the senpais leaving. Now that it was over, they had to face the reality. The reality of having to say farewell to the third years.

The exam period passed in a blur. The usual energy at practice was lacking, now that the three third years were missing. Four, including Kiyoko who was just as busy with exams and preparing to go to college as the rest of them were. Despite the fact that the new captain and the coach were both trying there best to keep everyone’s spirits up, it just simply wasn’t working. The gym felt empty, and although they would do anything to get the third years back, they started looking forward to getting some new first years in. Some first years that were unknown to the old third years and had plenty of energy to start afresh at their first year at high school.

Graduation came quicker than anyone expected it to, and suddenly it was time to say goodbye to the third years. Not just a goodbye from the volleyball team, but a goodbye from the school. Even if they had seen the third years in the hallways or outside the past few weeks, that point was now over. As per tradition, a graduation ceremony was held for the third years and everyone in the audience clapped politely. Some were happy to be moving on, others were upset about leaving their kouhais behind. Some had tears threatening to burst out at any moment. It was a rather emotional ceremony, one that moved everyone.

After the ceremony was over, the volleyball team gathered in the gym. They were all wearing their black school uniforms with the Karasuno logo on it. There was idle chatter between the members of the volleyball club, but the air around them was heavy.

“I-I can’t believe we’re leaving this place,” Sugawara was looking around the gym, absorbing it and all the memories he had created here.
“I’m... g-going to m-miss you a-all,” Asahi was the first one unable to hold the tears back as spoke.
But as Asahi broke into tears, some of the others soon followed. Both Tanaka and Nishinoya were unable to hold their emotions back. All of the first years aside from Tsukishima were on the edge of tears too.
“We, we, we’ll miss you too!” Hinata sobbed. “Thank you for everything!”
“Hey, now,” Daichi, who was standing closest to Hinata out of the three third years, rubbed the kouhai’s back gently. “It’s not as if we’ll be gone forever. We’ll come back and visit you during practice. Isn’t that right?” Daichi looked over at Asahi and Sugawara, receiving a nod from both of them. Asahi was crying too much to give a reply, and even Sugawara was struggling to keep the tears back.
“P-Promise me!” Hinata bowed in front of his graduating senapais. “Promise me you’ll come back and visit! Don’t forget us!”
“We promise,” Daichi was the spokesman for the third years. “We’ll be back to visit before you know it.”

They said their final goodbyes to each other before watching as the third years took one last look around the gym, the place they had spent so much time in over the past three years, before turning and leaving through the door without looking back. The group left in the gym, now only consisting of the first and second years, were all unsure of how to react. Aside from the tears running down almost everyone’s cheeks, no one knew what to say to comfort each other or to cheer each other up.

When it was only the three third year students together walking away from the school, it was only then that Daichi broke down along with the other two. The three held each other in a group hug, crying as they stood in the middle of an empty street, clinging onto the other two and not wanting to let go, in fear of losing everything.
“We’ll keep in touch, right?” Asahi choked through tears.
“Of course we will,” Sugawara attempted to assure him, though it was difficult through his own crying mess.
“I wouldn’t let you go without keeping touch,” Daichi chimed in. “Thank you for three amazing years. I don’t know how I would’ve managed without you two. We can’t stay here forever. Let’s head home now, shall we?”

29.
The broken neon light over Ennoshita’s desk was wavering at the pace of his typing, a precise and controlled tune. If it wasn’t to finish his report as quickly as possible, he would have fixed it himself.
« I can’t believe this happens in the most high tech place of the whole country. » he mumbled, annoyed.
Facing him was Daichi’s honest laughter, caught a second before a call. Today he was wearing this very confident face and reassuring attitude, a typical Daichi many encountered when they first joined the Bureau.
« It’s time ! You want to go with me ? »
Chief Ushijima once again assigned a rookie to Daichi’s good care. Here he was nicknamed their godfather, but he was too modest to take pride in it.
« No thanks ! You’re good enough at it. »
The desk that would probably be assigned to the new recruit wasn’t cleaned yet. Blocs of post-it’s and a bunch of pens were left abandoned, unused. Ennoshita didn’t bother to take them, maybe they would appreciate it, if they were the type to do it old school or to leave notes on other people’s desk. But the locked drawer, it would better be to check it, right ?

32.
Dyed blonde hair, piercings, arrogant eyes tuned down by politeness, Terushima Yuuji was the type of person Ennoshita would not thought as an Inspector, not to say he dislikes them. They shared a firm handshake and before any meaningful words were spoken, Terushima was already gone with Daichi, visiting the two hundreds (or so they said) floors of the tower.

« Don’t be so dense Enno-chan, you’re going to work together, for a bit a time at least. » sneaked Oikawa between two mouthful of spicy crackers. The arousing scent was already sticking to everything and everyone in the quarter.
« You, stop eating on my desk, thanks. »
He handed the packet to Ennoshita, to tempt him, only to be scolded in return. He wouldn’t voice it but sure wished that Terushima Yuuji wasn’t a pain in the ass like their Enforcer.

40.
No ray of sunshine could pierce through the defenses of those ragtag houses, ready to fall at any given time for trying to reach the sky by sheer stacking. So despite it being midday, the “alleys” of this district were merely covered in a warm orange, a reflection of a reflection that had little to do with real sunlight.
As they were diving deeper into enemy territory, First division split. Ennoshita opened the way, putting the damped wooden door to rest.
The moist filled his lungs as soon as he stepped in, barely finding a way to move on between all the trash. Terushima, going last, stiffened when he heard a cough. It was a trap, but he was confident in his skills. His mate was already a few feet further but he sweared there were someone in the walls.

67.
« Terushima ! » A shout from the other end of the house.

Without second thought he ran to the Inspector. A middle aged man was restraining Ennoshita to the ground. It’s the moment, he can – have to – fire. The criminal didn’t expect someone else, both hands were taken and his entire spine was vulnerable. It was a move even a child couldn’t miss. So he shot and shot and shot. His mind taken on by the rhythm of imaginary bangs that were more clicks, caused by his index forcing a trigger that was already locked back.

« Good job Terushima. »
Ennoshita’s hand, full of red, gave him a tap. Trying to keep his composure while he really thought that he would also be blown up by the Dominator was quite the challenge here.

A slightly distorted version of Daichi’s voice broke in.
« Shepherd 1 to Shepherd 2, suspect killed. Situation ? »
« Shepherd 2 to Shepherd 1, suspect – »
Terushima signed about the voice in the wall and went off.
« Suspect killed. Surprise guest. »

Terushima was awestruck. What he found after destroying the already crumbling wall was a frail man, barely alive, wrapped in several layers of blankets. He was breathing, for sure, but whether or not he heard or saw shit was another question.

« A relative ? »
It didn’t mattered. His hue was as muddy as this place, it never knew light.
« We better end his suffering » was the way Ennoshita wanted to go. But he wasn’t exactly pleased with the idea, Terushima neither. It would be easier, but not in line with Daichi’s mindset.
« Let’s call medical assistance. » He finally decided. « We may be able to save him. »
A tic stopped time, a tac bloomed in an explosion, embracing their bodies.

35.
The news report was fascinating Terushima. Despite all the fuss and the fire spread afterward, the city aiming for the sky was still standing. So did he and Ennoshita, or they were rather bedstuck for the next month. Oikawa kept yelling how lucky they were that the bomb was not located on the criminal, but in the room they previously left. Daichi didn’t yell but his look of upmost angriness and disapproval said a lot.

« To save people yes. But don’t forget to secure yourselves ! Understand ? »

Terushima knew his co-worker was alive. Still, spending days alongside a sleeping beauty wasn’t his preferred recovery scenario. Looking back at it, it would have been tragic to lost a new recruit on their first day.

Daishou POV.

***

How did we end up here?
For all our animosity
We were always together

We of course didn’t say the truth
It was easier to say nothing
After all Jedi let go of emotions
Or at least keep them in control

You left on a mission
You never returned
You were listed as dead
You left me all alone

We didn’t bicker anymore
We didn’t sparr anymore
(We weren’t together anymore)

I look at you now
I see your lightsaber is red now
I still have my green one

Our lightsabers are drawn
And you are no longer gone

Oh my dearest love,
How did we end up here?
