This got out of hand, and there's a lot missing that I'd like to add, but time is of the essence. Thank you for the song inspiration! I love it when I’m given songs to work with to fit the mood. Had it on repeat practically the entire time uwu

Semi gets off the bus and hikes her backpack up her shoulder, looking up at the gray sky.

She’s back in Tokyo after having left for the past few years. Everything feels the same and yet so different. There’s a happiness here she’d kind of forgotten, even through all the dreary memories.

She shouldn’t be so bitter and empty at a mere twenty two years old, but here she is, sighing forlornly and going to get the keys to her new apartment.

*

Life settles down for Semi, same day in day out, a little boring, a little unhappy, but life nonetheless. She gets acquainted with a few of her neighbors over the next few weeks, finding company in her opposite neighbor’s presence, somehow ending up sharing pizza on her floor at 2AM as the man had come back from wherever he went at night and tried to let himself into the wrong apartment.

At first Semi had thought he was drunk, it simply turned out he was both exhausted and high on a simple thing called ‘happiness’ Semi had snorted at him a little, but had barely been able to quell her curiosity.

They’d sat and chatted, eaten pizza, and Komi had returned to his own apartment.

That had been the end of it.

*

She’s had an awful day.

Work was a nightmare, she’d ended up working a double shift to cover for one of her colleagues, been shouted at more times than she could count and had coffee spilled on her twice in the span of thirty minutes.

She works in retail.

Nowhere near coffee.

Semi sighs and rubs at her temple as she climbs the stairs to her apartment, both looking forward to getting in and relaxing and apprehending spending yet another night alone with her thoughts. Komi is locking his door just as Semi arrives at their shared floor and turns to her, raising an eyebrow and giving a low whistle,

“You look unhappy,” her neighbor says, and Semi can’t help an unamused snort. She doesn’t even bother biting back the remark that leaves her, knowing her neighbor doesn’t mind,

“No shit sherlock,” It’s Komi’s turn to snort this time

“You’re welcome. Well, have a nice evening,” Semi waves at him without looking, too busy unlocking her door. But she does stop to watch Komi leave, wondering where the man goes most nights that has him in such good humor all the time. Semi suddenly wonders if Komi has eyes at the back of his head, because he stops abruptly in the staircase and turns around, and the silvery-blond looks back at him, raising an eyebrow,

“Y’know, if ever you need somewhere to go, there’s this club at the other end of town, Owlet’s - I know, I know, the name sucks,” He says before Semi even has chance to open her mouth, the other eyebrow having raised in disbelief, “Anyway, if ever you’re feeling down and need an escape, it’s a good place. Look for gold stilettos,” and he turns and starts back down the stairs, whistling tunelessly as Semi stares at him, a little dumbstruck.

She stands there a few moments more before shaking her head and making her way inside her apartment, dropping her bag to the floor and flopping unceremoniously onto the couch. She decides to rest her eyes for a few minutes before getting up and being a responsible adult once more.

*

If yesterday was bad, today could only be comparable to the worst day in existence. First of all she’d ended up falling asleep on her couch and not getting anything done, waking up with her alarm blaring from her bedroom and a grumbling stomach. She’d barely had the time to grab a cereal bar before she was rushing out of the door to start yet another day in retail hell.

She climbs the stairs once more, crossing Komi as he leaves again, the man giving her a bright grin and a “Chin up!” Semi only glares at him slightly before climbing the rest of the stairs and making her way into her apartment - not home, this place isn’t home -

She flops onto her couch and stares at the ceiling. At least she’s well rested today, and she gets tomorrow off, which is a blessing.

She stays like that for a few minutes, recalling Komi’s chipper mood and yesterday’s words while she listens to the empty silence of her apartment.

*

Semi climbs into a taxi and gives the man an address close to her destination, unsure if she really wants to be dropped off right in front of the place - or even if the driver would be willing to do so; all the information she’s found about the area of town she’s going to is rather… dark.

She has no idea what’s gotten into her, one moment she was moping on her couch and the next she’d changed into her favorite pair of jeans and a purple tank top that she hasn’t worn since- in ages and was looking up the address to the place named Owlet’s.

And now here she is, stood in front of a dark alleyway that her map application tells her will lead her straight to the place her neighbor had told her about.

If one thing could be said about Semi Eita, it’s that she’s not always the best at self-preservation. Tendou had always told her she was lucky to be as tall as she is, the fact that she towers over most people, male, female and others alike, a helpful deterrent, that and the years of sports and volleyball that had put a decent amount of muscle on her frame, not quite making her look butch, but definitely giving her that extra edge.

She stands at the mouth of the alleyway for a moment longer when she hears a group of people approach, laughing jovially,

“Well if it isn’t Semi!” She hears in a voice that seems familiar. She turns to look at the group and sees three men, all very tall save for the one in the middle - who just so happens to be her neighbor, Komi. She can’t help the slight smile of relief that comes to her face as the group makes it’s way towards her, “Yo! Glad to see you came out of your cave, c’mon!” The short man says happily, ushering her down the alley before she has time to protest. The two men either side of him laughing boisterously - or well, one laughs boisterously, the other one just chuckles.

*

The music is loud, but not too loud. And it’s nothing like what Semi had first expected, the place is decently lit, most of the people are so tall that she blends in with them and she hasn’t had this much fun in ages as she moves around with strangers to the beat of the music.

She breaks away from the crowd after ... An undetermined amount of time and makes her way to the bar to order herself something to quench her parched throat. She sighs in relief as the water she’d asked for makes its way down her throat, the bartender not even bating an eyelash when she’d asked for a bottle of water rather than anything else, and she finds herself liking this place more and more.

There’s loud laughter somewhere from her left and she looks over, tucking a strand of long wavy hair behind her ear and regretting not putting it in her usual high ponytail - maybe she should just have it cut short and be done with it. Someone stumbles into the bar next to her and lets out a melodious laugh and she looks over, eyes widening as she has to look up to see the prettiest face she’s ever had the pleasure of admiring.

The girl is tall and incredibly slender, a good couple of inches taller than Semi herself, gorgeous long blonde hair pulled back in a lop-sided ponytail, she smiles at the bartender and Semi swears the world shines a little brighter for a moment.

The girl turns to her, blue eyes meeting Semi’s hazel, and pulls her hair out of it’s ponytail, causing her long hair to go cascading down her back, and passes Semi the hair band,

“Here, you’ve been pushing your hair out of your eyes most of the night,” Semi stares at the hairband for a moment before looking back up at her, “It’s fine, I was going to take it out anyway, my hair doesn’t stay up very well,” She says kindly,

“You look nice with your hair down,” Semi says without thinking, biting her cheek slightly after the words register in her mind. The girl smiles brightly at her,

“Thanks!” She says, a cute blush making it’s way to her cheeks, and gently takes Semi’s hand to place the hair-band in it, “You have beautiful hair yourself,” She adds, indicating Semi’s long wavy black-tipped silver locks and the shorter girl can’t help the way her own cheeks flush slightly at the compliment. She takes the hair-band and ties her hair up in a high ponytail and looks up again once she’s done to see the girl watching her.

Semi can’t help but stare slightly, taking this time to admire the other girl’s features, from her hooded almond shaped eyes that give her a slightly foxy and seductive look to her thin, perfect brows, all the way to her pink cheeks and delicate lips. Semi can’t help but be a little enthralled with her,

“You’re new here,” The other blonde says at last with a kind smile, “I’m Konoha Akino, feel free to call me Akino, or just Aki. No formalities here,” Semi nods at her in understanding, eyes darting briefly to the water bottle the bartender gives Konoha before locking gazes with her once again,

“Semi Eika,” She answers, “You can call me Eika, if you’d like,” She hasn’t felt this excited about meeting someone new in ages,

“Well Eika, would you like to dance with me?” Konoha asks, holding her hand out in invitation as some of her hair falls over her shoulder. Semi stares at her, then at her hand for a moment before taking it and letting her lead her back onto the dance-floor.

Konoha is wearing golden stilettos.

*

Semi has been going to Owlet’s as often as possible for the past three months and hasn’t had the time or energy to return for almost two weeks, and she’s itching with impatience, needing to escape everything going on in her life and around her.

Tonight she’s in her favorite jeans again -and that’s not at all because a certain blonde had told her she looked really nice in them-, along with a loose fitting button down of which she’s left the top three buttons undone, teasing more skin than she’s used to, but making her feel oddly confident, especially when she doesn’t receive any catcalls or wolf-whistles from the crowd in Owlet’s’ only praise and a teasing jab from Komi,

Semi has been dancing for a good while, having lost track of time as she’s prone to do in this place where the outside world ceases to exist. She’s growing a little antsy, having yet to see the person she’s gotten used to seeing here every time she comes, as if she never leaves this place and exists solely on the dance floor of Owlet’s .

She’s busy looking out at the dance floor when a pair of hands cover her eyes and a chest presses up against her shoulders,

“Aki,” She says with a grin, leaning back ever-so-slightly, breathing in the mango scent that always seems to accompany the sandy blonde. She can hear the pout before her friend has even opened her mouth,

“You’re no fun Eika. I’m sure you cheat,”

“I assure you I don’t, you’re just the only one who does this, so of course I’m going to know who it is,” Konoha grins wide at her,

“Of course I am! I’m the only one who can tease you like this,” Her smile softens as she stares down at Semi, biting her lip and making the silvery-blonde tilt her head in question,

“Ak-iii!?” She asks, cutting herself off halfway through the name as the other girl takes her by the wrist and starts guiding her through the crowd. Semi takes it in stride, expecting them to go dance and wiggling her wrist so that she can link her hand with the one around her wrist. Instead of going deeper into the club where the dance-floor is though, Konoha guides them to the exit and Semi feels confusion bubble in her chest.

Konoha doesn’t stop until they’re outside in the drizzle, the music filtering through from the club into the alleyway. She stops and turns around, seemingly not caring about the weather as she looks down at Semi through her hooded eyes, not saying anything and nibbling slightly on her bottom lip. Semi tilts her head as she looks up at her, thoroughly confused but choosing not to question the sandy-blonde’s actions, waiting patiently for her to organize her thoughts.

“Eika,” She says at last, “These past few months have been incredible, and I don’t know about you, but this small nook of happiness we share here feels like it’s not enough anymore… So, I was wondering if, uhm…”

“Yes,” Semi says without even waiting to hear the end of the sentence. All she knows is that Konoha is asking to spend more time together, outside of this place, in the real world, and Semi has never wanted something more than she wants this right now.

The laugh that bubbles out of Konoha is beautiful. It’s Semi’s first time hearing it so clearly without the usual loud backdrop of music and if she thought it was beautiful before, now it’s downright heavenly. Konoha calms down after a beat and grins at her,

“Well in that case, mind if we start now?” She asks, and doesn’t even wait for a response before lifting one foot up delicately, balancing perfectly as she slips one trademark gold stiletto off, followed by the other, and suddenly instead of looking up, Semi is looking straight ahead, “Hi,” Konoha whispers, and Semi can feel her breath against her lips,

“Hi,” She whispers back, “Would you like to dance with me?” Konoha grins and nods, wrapping her arms around Semi’s neck just as the drizzle picks up into a steady rain, slowly starting to soak through their clothes as they twirl together in the back of a dark alleyway, to the faint upbeat music coming from the club next to them.

Let's dance to Joy Division
And celebrate the irony
Everything is going wrong
But we're so happy
