Aomine could think of a million places he’d rather be than walking through a frost bitten park for no other reason than “A walk would be nice, let’s go out!”

He could be spread out on his bed reading one of his magazines.  Or he could be seated under the kotatsu one of the hundred snacks his mom had made for this time of year.  Hell, he’d take sitting at his desk doing his fucking homework over freezing his ass off outside.  He hated the cold, hated the way it bit into his exposed skin above the collar of his coat, and below the cuff on his arm.  He hated the way she’d pulled his right hand out of his pocket just so she could slip hers into it and squeeze, leaving his fingers numb and uncomfortable.  He didn’t see why they had to hold hands anyway, she was wearing gloves for fuck’s sake.

However, when he complained and tried to pull his hand away to put it back in his pocket, she turned her head and looked at him in a way that had his chest tightening.  The very same look that had him pulling on warmer clothes and traipsing through the park at dusk in the middle of winter.  Because in the end, he hated that look more than he hated the cold, and loved her more than he hated the cold, and so he was fucked.

"This time tomorrow it will already be the new year."

Aomine blinked out of his inward seething and glanced down at his girlfriend.  It seemed an inane thing to say, since it was December 31st, so of course it would be the new year tomorrow.  “Obviously.”

Momoi rolled her eyes and gave his hand a sharp squeeze.  “Don’t be like that, it’s exciting!  The new year always brings about change and that can be fun.”

Change could also be the worst, but Aomine didn’t bother pointing that out.  He didn’t really understand the fuss around New Years, it was just another day in a long line of days.

“You do remember that we’re graduating in a few months, don’t you?”

Aomine honestly tried not to think about it.  High school was easy, he got to play basketball against worthy opponents and nap.  Graduating meant facing the real world and the fact that he had no idea what he wanted to do other than not go to university.  He didn’t understand why she was so excited – of all the change that could come, he didn’t see any of it as positive.  “Yeah.”

Sighing, the girl beside him came to a stop and stepped in front of him.  There was a soft smile on her face and she released his hand so she could lift hers up and cradle his face.  “Are you still worried about the future?”

He clicked his tongue in answer, eyes flickering away.  Momoi shook her head a bit and tugged him down to her level so she could kiss him softly.  “We’ll figure it out,” she whispered against his lips.  “We always do.”

And that was the heart of his problem really.  Though he would never admit it, he was deathly afraid he wouldn’t have her to rely on anymore.  She’d been with him since they were toddlers, every school he’d gone to, she’d gone too.  But that record was about to be destroyed.  She was headed to one of the best universities in Tokyo and he would end up working some shitty job.  She’d end up with a degree and a career and where would he be?  Not good enough for her.

He was an idiot, for sure, but he could admit, to himself, when he couldn’t deny it anymore, that he needed her and a future without her didn’t seem worth living.

“I love you, Satsuki.”  Aomine rumbled, pulling her into his arms and kissing her properly until he couldn’t feel the cold any longer.

Momoi giggled, more than happy to kiss him beneath the only light in the park.  “I love you too, Dai-chan~”
