Yuuri had been lounging on the couch of Viktor’s apartment when his boyfriend came bursting in the door looking very much like had just been running from some sort of wild animal. Before Yuuri could even say anything, Viktor was dashing into his bedroom and out of site.

Curious as he was, Yuuri got up and followed Viktor only to find him kneeling down in front of his closet, tossing clothes off to the side so he could reach something underneath them.

“Viktor,” Yuuri started as he slowly approached his frantic boyfriend, “Are you okay?”

Viktor stopped what he was doing and sighed, turning his head down towards the floor. “I’m… no, I don’t think I am okay.”

At those words, Yuuri’s heart nearly stopped, his whole world suddenly coming to a grinding halt. What did he mean by that? Was he hurt? Did he hurt someone? What happened? So many different possibilities were racing through his mind, so many terrible things that he hoped would never come to pass were suddenly making a comeback in his thoughts.

His heart was certainly in motion again, beating nearly uncontrollably as he stood there, frozen near Viktor’s closet. He was so caught up in his own world that he didn’t even realize Viktor was now standing in front of him, reaching out to put his hands on his shoulders.

“Yuuri,” Viktor called quietly, trying to snap his boyfriend out of the daze he was clearly in, “Zolotse, please listen to me. Everything’s going to be okay. It’s going to be okay,” he assured again, despite not knowing if that was the truth.

Slowly, Yuuri emerged from his own mind and blinked a few times, focusing his eyes on Viktor. “What happened, Viktor?” He had to know. Nothing else was going to happen here until he knew.

Viktor sighed, turning his eyes from Yuuri. “I made a mistake. A big one. You know what I do… what we do is dangerous and risky.”

Of course he did, Yuuri had been in this business long enough to know how risky it was. He went out everyday under the assumption that he was going to get caught, but had been lucky enough to never have that happen. “What happened, Viktor?” He repeated, soft and stern at the same time. Whatever it was, he knew it was bad enough to freak Viktor out, so obviously it was meant to be taken seriously. But he could also see the guilt in his boyfriend’s eyes, he was overflowing with it.

“I hurt someone, Yuuri. I don’t know how bad… but there was a lot of blood and another witness in the house. It was supposed to be empty, Yuuri. JJ told me the house was going to be empty. I don’t know if he lied or just had no idea himself, but the house wasn’t empty. So I got caught, and the guy tried to fight me, and…” he trailed off, unable to find the words to say next.

Yuuri wrapped his arms around Viktor then, bringing him in close and holding him tightly. This was bad, very, very bad, but Yuuri couldn’t stand to see the love of his life so shaken like this. He couldn’t tell Viktor that it wasn’t his fault, because he didn’t have the full story and he didn’t want to lie to Viktor and make him feel more guilty about what had occurred. But other than that, he couldn’t think of anything else to say. His own worries were still driving him crazy, and nothing about this situation sounded okay.

The two sat in silence for a few minutes, holding each other close, listening to the sound of one another’s breathing.

It was Viktor who eventually decided to break the silence. “Run away with me,” he whispered in Yuuri’s ear, causing Yuuri’s breath to hitch.

Yuuri had to take a moment to process what had just been said to him. Run away with me. No one had ever asked that of him before. Yuuri had run away from his past lives countless times for reasons he didn’t necessarily like to talk about, but never had he run away with someone.

“Run away with me,” Viktor repeated, pulling back from their hug so he could look into Yuuri’s eyes. “I have money, lots of it, in my safe. We can get on my motorcycle and just drive. We could go anywhere, do anything, be anyone. We don’t have to live dangerously anymore, Yuuri. We can get real jobs, buy a house, get a dog, start a family. Just you and me, zolotse. You and me versus the world.”

It’s not like Yuuri would be leaving behind much. He had an apartment, and a few friends, but his family was still back in Japan. He had run away from them already, so how could it hurt to run just one more time? And this time, he wouldn’t be alone. “You and me versus the world. That sounds nice.”

Viktor nodded, bringing one hand up to cup Yuuri’s cheek. “It will be. Please Yuuri, come with me. I don’t want to live without you.”

Of course, how could Yuuri possibly say no to that?

So they ran together. They grabbed all the money from Viktor’s safe, and headed out the door, leaving everything else behind.

The two of them hopped on Viktor’s motorcycle and drove onto a road that could be headed anywhere, leaving the bright city lights behind them for what could be positively anything they wanted.
